Square Enix says these changes should improve performance, but its published notes do not provide a Steam Deck-specific preset or frame-rate guarantee. Steam lists the game as Steam Deck Verified; that compatibility label is not a performance benchmark.
Update the game before changing settings
Square Enix’s PC update notes record performance-related changes in versions 1.01 and 1.02. Version 1.01, released September 26, 2024, fixed an issue that caused frame rate to drop under certain conditions. Version 1.02, released October 17, 2024, adjusted graphics settings intended to improve performance. Check that your Steam installation has downloaded any available updates before troubleshooting; the notes cited here are historical and do not establish whether later updates have been released.
Which in-game graphics settings should you lower?
Reduce Graphical Fidelity
In the game’s graphics settings, lower Graphical Fidelity from its current level and check whether play feels smoother. Square Enix says it adjusted these settings “to improve overall game performance,” but does not identify a single best value for Steam Deck.
Set Shadow Quality to low or medium
Try Shadow Quality at low first, or medium if you prefer to retain more visual detail. In its version 1.02 notes, Square Enix said it expanded the setting to include cloud quality at low, medium, and high, and that selecting low or medium “should improve performance.” The publisher gives no quantified Deck-specific gain.

How to tell whether a change helps on your Deck
- Choose a repeatable scene or activity. Use the same area and actions for each comparison so that differences in scene complexity do not confuse the result.
- Change one setting at a time. Lower Graphical Fidelity or Shadow Quality, then play the same section again. Changing both together makes it harder to tell which adjustment helped.
- Keep the setting that suits your priorities. Lower detail may improve smoothness, while higher detail preserves image quality. The cited update notes do not quantify the visual or performance trade-off on Steam Deck.
Performance can vary with the scene and device conditions. These steps are a practical way to troubleshoot your own Deck, not a tested preset or a promise of a particular frame rate.
What Steam Deck Verified does—and does not—tell you
Steam’s FINAL FANTASY XVI listing currently displays the Steam Deck Verified designation. That indicates compatibility status; it does not state that the game holds a specific frame rate on every Deck.

Square Enix’s September 10, 2024 PC demo update said it fixed a stuttering issue and that the fixes would also be applied to the forthcoming release version. The publisher had also acknowledged stuttering on some PC environments in its August 22, 2024 demo update, alongside changes to DLSS, FSR, and XeSS image quality and a fix for Dynamic Resolution being locked to its lowest setting. These are historical notes: they do not show that every current stutter has been eliminated or identify a Steam Deck-specific fix.
