Start by identifying whether the problem is low frame rate or slow gameplay: lower render distance for choppy visuals, and investigate simulation distance plus entity-heavy areas when the world itself feels slow. The settings are related, but they do different jobs. The right balance depends on your Minecraft edition, device and whether you play on a server.
First, identify what kind of lag you have
Low frames per second (FPS) usually look like stuttering or slow camera movement while the game continues to respond. In that case, the client may be struggling to draw the city. Slow gameplay can look different: entities or mechanisms respond late, or the world seems to fall behind. That can involve simulation work on your device or server. A city may have both problems, but changing the wrong distance setting may not address the symptom.
- Choppy visuals: lower render distance first, then reassess.
- Slow mechanics or entity behavior: check simulation distance and look for concentrated entities or always-active areas.
- Both: make one change at a time so you can tell which adjustment helps.
Adjust render distance and simulation distance for the right reason
Render distance: reduce how much of the city is drawn
Render distance controls how far away the world is drawn for the player. Lowering it can reduce the amount of visible world the client must render, which makes it a sensible first test when a skyline or dense district causes low FPS. The trade-off is shorter visibility: distant buildings and terrain appear later or are not visible until you move closer.
Simulation distance: limit where gameplay continues
Simulation distance controls the area around the player in which gameplay activity runs. It is not simply another name for render distance: changing it can affect mechanics and entities, as well as workload. Minecraft’s official Java release notes describe simulation distance as a way to allow higher render distance with less CPU load (Minecraft: Caves & Cliffs: Part II out today on Java). In Bedrock, Microsoft Learn documents the distance settings and their trade-offs for creators (Simulation Distance, Render Distance, and Ticking Areas).

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Do not assume the same slider value is right across editions or devices. Microsoft’s Bedrock documentation says render-distance defaults depend on the device and describes a configurable range; those are Bedrock creator-documentation details, not a universal target for every platform or retail version. Check the setting labels and available range in your own version, then lower the relevant setting gradually and compare the result.
Reduce unnecessary entities in crowded districts
Dense city builds can accumulate mobs, pets, villagers, minecarts and other entities. Their number, complexity and concentration matter: entities may add client rendering work, while pathfinding or AI can add server-side work. Microsoft Learn advises creators to “Keep an eye on entity count, complexity and density” and notes the burden that clusters of entities can place on server-side pathfinding or AI and on client rendering (Improving performance and resource usage).

Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Remove entities that no longer have a gameplay purpose, especially in busy or persistently loaded districts.
- Reduce clusters of entities that need to pathfind near one another.
- Review decorative or transport systems that keep many entities active in the same area.
Prefer targeted cleanup in the neighborhoods where the slowdown occurs rather than stripping useful activity from the entire world. The cited creator guidance explains likely workload sources; it does not provide an FPS estimate for a particular city.
On Bedrock, keep ticking areas small and necessary
This advice applies specifically to Bedrock ticking areas, a creator feature used to keep chunks active beyond the normal player-centered simulation area. Microsoft Learn documents a limit of 10 separate ticking areas per world, with up to 100 chunks in each area. These are configuration limits, not performance targets: Microsoft also warns that more numerous or larger ticking areas increase performance cost (Simulation Distance, Render Distance, and Ticking Areas).

- Keep only areas that need to stay active for the world to function.
- Limit each area to the smallest footprint that serves that purpose.
- Remove obsolete ticking areas after a build or mechanism no longer needs them.
Do not apply ticking-area advice to Java as though it were the same setting; the cited guidance describes Bedrock.
Ease demanding visual effects if the problem is still visual
Particles and Vibrant Visuals can be comparatively demanding. If lowering render distance is not enough, try reducing particle density or disabling Vibrant Visuals, where available. These changes can make effects or lighting less rich, so compare the visual trade-off against smoother play. Microsoft’s Bedrock creator guidance discusses these visual costs and the use of fog to limit the apparent set of visible objects (Simulation Distance, Render Distance, and Ticking Areas).

- Choose a repeatable spot in the affected district and note whether the main symptom is choppy visuals, slow mechanics, or both.
- Change one relevant setting: try lower render distance for FPS trouble, or lower simulation distance if the issue is active gameplay workload.
- Return to the same spot and compare under similar conditions. If the problem remains, restore or keep the first change as appropriate and test the next likely cause, such as entity density or visual effects.
- For a Bedrock world with ticking areas, inspect whether each area still needs to exist and whether its footprint can be reduced.
Changing one factor at a time is more useful than applying every reduction at once: it shows whether the bottleneck was drawing the city, simulating activity, or a combination.

What these fixes can—and cannot—establish
The official guidance supports these adjustments as ways to manage rendering and simulation workload, but it does not report benchmark results for large city worlds. There is no defensible FPS gain to promise from any single change. A hardware or hosting recommendation would also depend on the edition, device, multiplayer setup and actual bottleneck, so diagnose those before considering a purchase.
