You can often improve frame-rate consistency or reduce avoidable stutter without replacing hardware—but the right fix depends on the symptom. Check whether the problem is low FPS, scene-specific dips, hitching, input delay, or slow loading; then change one setting at a time and retest the same scene. Settings can correct misconfiguration and reduce software overhead, but they cannot remove a genuine CPU or GPU limit.
Identify what is actually slowing the game
Before changing settings, note the game, resolution, graphics options, and whether you are using a laptop or desktop. Pay attention to when the problem occurs: consistently low frame rates, drops during busy scenes, brief freezes, delayed local input, and slow loading can have different causes.
- Low FPS most of the time: The game may be using the wrong GPU, demanding settings may be too high, or the system may be at a hardware limit.
- Dips in busy scenes: A particular effect or workload may be difficult for the system to render. Compare the same scene after changing one demanding setting.
- Hitching or brief freezes: Background activity, storage constraints, or software issues may contribute. Note whether the hitch happens during loading or at repeatable moments in play.
- Input feels delayed: This is not the same as low average FPS. Display mode and presentation settings can affect local frame latency.
- Slow loading: Loading time is distinct from rendering speed; lowering visual effects may not resolve it.
Online lag is different again: a delayed response from a multiplayer server or network connection is not proof that the PC is rendering slowly.
Reduce avoidable background work and keep software current
Close applications you do not need while gaming, and review startup apps if they continue running in the background. Microsoft lists limited storage, too many startup apps, outdated software, and hardware that no longer meets current requirements among possible causes of slow Windows performance. See Microsoft’s Windows performance tips.

Check Windows Update and the support page or software utility for your PC or graphics-card maker for applicable system and graphics-driver updates. Update through those official channels; a third-party “optimizer” is not a required step. If the problem began immediately after a driver or game update, note that timing rather than assuming every update will improve performance.
Make sure Windows assigns the game to the right GPU
This check matters on a Windows 11 PC with both integrated and discrete graphics. If the game is assigned to the integrated processor when you want it to use the discrete GPU, set its preference to High performance:

- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Select the game. If it is not listed, use the option to add a desktop app and browse to the game’s executable.
- Choose Options, select High performance if appropriate, and save.
- Close and restart the game so the changed preference takes effect.
Microsoft documents this per-app graphics preference in its Windows 11 windowed-game and graphics settings guidance. If your PC has only one graphics processor, this setting will not provide a second GPU or a universal performance boost.
Try Windows 11 windowed-game optimization only in its supported cases
Microsoft says, “Optimizations for windowed games improves gaming performance for DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed and borderless windowed modes.” The feature is scoped to compatible games using those APIs and display modes; it is not a general FPS switch for every game or for every fullscreen configuration. Microsoft describes it as moving compatible games from the legacy blt presentation model to flip model, reducing frame latency and enabling supported features such as Auto HDR and variable refresh rate (VRR).

To check or change the setting, go to Settings > System > Display > Graphics, select the app, open its graphics options, and use the windowed-game optimization control if available. Test the game in the display mode you actually use. If that game behaves worse, turn the option off for that app and compare again.
Lower demanding in-game settings in controlled tests
Use the game’s own graphics menu to test a small adjustment, then replay the same scene at the same resolution. Compare both smoothness and image quality. The impact of a setting depends on the game and on whether the system is limited by the CPU, GPU, or another factor, so there is no reliable universal ranking or guaranteed FPS gain.

- Hall Effect Joysticks: Delivering enhanced recentering performance for smoother control and superior anti-drift capability. Plus, with anti-friction rings.
- 2-Way Trigger Lock: With trigger stops, gamers can toggle between short and long pull positions. Additionally, gamers can activate hair trigger mode by pressing M+LT/RT (triggers must be in the long pull position).

- Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
- Resolution or render scale: Lowering either reduces the amount of image detail rendered, usually with a visible sharpness tradeoff.
- Ray tracing: If enabled and performance is poor, test turning it down or off and compare the result.
- Shadows and anti-aliasing: Try a lower option when the game offers one, checking whether the change improves the problem without harming the image more than you want.
- Other costly effects: Change one option at a time rather than applying a preset and losing track of which change mattered.
AMD’s Radeon Boost is a separate, supported-game feature that adjusts resolution based on user input. Its availability and settings vary by configuration, and the resolution change can affect image clarity. See AMD’s Adrenalin graphics-settings documentation for feature and per-game profile details.

NVIDIA: test maximum-performance mode for a suspected clock-throttling issue
NVIDIA describes Prefer maximum performance as a possible remedy in certain applications when incorrect clock throttling is causing low FPS. It is not a blanket recommendation for every game. Test it for the affected game if that condition seems relevant, and revert if you see no observable benefit or it adds unwanted power use or heat. NVIDIA’s guidance is at Setting “Power management mode” from Normal to Maximum Performance.

AMD: distinguish performance features from power-saving controls
AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition includes graphics options and per-game profiles, but which controls appear depends on the system and supported game. Radeon Boost can adjust resolution in supported games; Radeon Chill regulates frame rate to conserve power and reduce heat, so it is not a general FPS-maximizing switch. AMD describes these controls in its Adrenalin graphics-settings documentation.
Intel: check eligibility before considering Application Optimization
Intel Application Optimization changes thread scheduling for selected software titles and may improve performance in supported cases. It is limited to eligible hardware and software, and Intel says results vary with configuration and graphics capability. Check Intel’s current supported-game list and requirements before enabling or expecting a benefit: Intel Application Optimization overview.
Retest consistently and recognize a hardware limit
Change one setting, restart the game when required, and compare the same scene under the same conditions. Record whether the change improved the symptom you care about, not just a momentary frame-rate reading. If a setting does not help, restore it before testing another so the tradeoff remains clear.
Software changes can remove avoidable overhead or correct a misconfiguration, but they cannot make every underpowered processor or graphics card meet a demanding game’s requirements. If graphics options are already low and repeatable tests still show the same limitation, you may have reached the ceiling for that hardware. No settings change can guarantee a fixed FPS improvement across different PCs and games.
