What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
First identify whether your game has low frame rates throughout play or brief stutters and freezes; they can feel similar but point to different causes. Reproduce the problem in the same scene, then test reversible changes one at a time. Stuttering alone does not tell you which component is at fault.
Is it low FPS or stuttering?
Low FPS means the game is delivering too few frames for a sustained period. Stuttering, hitching, or micro-stutter describes uneven delivery: a brief pause or burst of slow frames can interrupt otherwise smooth play, even when the average FPS looks adequate. Both can occur together.
A hitch can arise at several points in the graphics data path, so the symptom by itself does not identify a faulty part. NVIDIA’s troubleshooting guide describes several possible causes; its older system examples should not be treated as current recommendations or as a diagnosis of your PC.
Record the problem before changing settings
Choose a repeatable scene or activity and note what happens before you troubleshoot. Record the game, resolution, graphics settings, Windows version, GPU, CPU, RAM, storage type, and when the issue started. Note whether FPS stays low throughout, falls in certain scenes, or whether short freezes happen despite otherwise high FPS.

- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
- Use the same game scene and settings for each comparison.
- Change one setting or background app at a time.
- Give the game another run after a change and note whether the problem recurs, rather than judging from one brief improvement.
Check for a recent game or driver change
If the problem began after a game patch or graphics-driver update, check the game’s notices and the installed driver’s release notes for known issues. AMD’s stability troubleshooting guidance recommends checking for documented driver issues, updating the affected application, and considering an earlier driver when a known issue has no fix. That is general guidance, not proof that a particular driver caused your game’s stutter.
Allow for shader-cache stutter after a driver update
Games compile shaders, and NVIDIA says the driver cache stores compiled shaders for later runs. NVIDIA’s Control Panel documentation notes that shader compilation is a common cause of gameplay stuttering and that installing a new driver deletes the cache. The first run after an update may therefore hitch while shaders are compiled again. If the same stutter keeps recurring on later runs, do not assume the cache explains it; continue troubleshooting.

Test whether background software is interfering
For a quick comparison, close nonessential background apps, game overlays, and capture utilities, then repeat the same scene. If the issue remains, a Windows clean boot can help determine whether a startup program or service is involved.
- Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions. Note which items you disable so you can restore them.
- Test the game in the same scene while Windows is in a clean-boot state.
- If the problem disappears, re-enable disabled items in groups and test again until the conflict returns. Then narrow down the responsible item.
- Restore normal startup after testing.
A clean boot starts Windows with only essential drivers and startup programs, but it temporarily removes some functionality. If the game still stutters in that state, the test has not identified a background-software conflict; it does not prove which other cause is responsible.

Check Windows graphics settings and game options
Try windowed-game optimizations where supported
On Windows 11, “Optimizations for windowed games” applies to compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless mode. If your game meets those conditions, test the setting and restart the game. Microsoft explains the feature and its scope in its Windows 11 documentation. It does not apply to every game or display mode.
Choose the game’s GPU on a multi-GPU PC
If your PC has more than one GPU, Windows lets you set a per-game graphics preference. Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, select or add the game, choose Options, then test High performance. Microsoft documents the setting on the same Windows 11 support page. The preference is relevant only when the PC offers a choice of GPUs.

Reduce demanding graphics settings methodically
Lower one graphics option at a time and compare the same scene. If video memory (VRAM) is constrained, test a lower texture quality first: texture data can contribute to stutter when it exceeds available video memory. NVIDIA discusses this possibility in its lag and low-FPS guide. A change may help in one game and have little effect in another, so do not expect a fixed FPS gain.
Treat Auto SR as an optional experiment
Microsoft’s Auto SR documentation says support depends on the device and render resolution, and results vary with the game, settings, and system. Try it only if your device and game are supported, and compare the same workload; it is not a universal stutter fix.
When does a hardware upgrade make sense?
Upgrade only when monitoring or repeatable tests point to a specific limit. A GPU change is relevant when GPU capability is the constraint for the game, resolution, and settings you want to use. Consider RAM or storage only when measurements indicate memory pressure or storage loading is responsible. A parts list or the words “low FPS” alone cannot establish which component needs replacing.
When comparing upgrade options, use the confirmed bottleneck, target game, resolution and settings, measured performance in the same workload, compatibility with the existing PC, and total cost. A generic “gaming performance” claim is not a useful comparison without those conditions.
