Start with Gray Zone Warfare’s in-game benchmark, then adjust one graphics setting at a time and compare the same scene. Update your GPU driver from its manufacturer, use an upscaler supported by your card, and distinguish a brief first-visit hitch from recurring stutter. There is no universal setting that fixes every system: the developer has identified several game-side causes, and published patch improvements are not independent performance tests.
How to troubleshoot performance, step by step
- Run the in-game benchmark. Patch 0.3.5.0 added a hardware-based benchmark that suggests settings. Treat its result as a starting point, not a guarantee for every live-world situation. For a useful comparison, keep the same scene or route and change one option at a time. MADFINGER’s Patch 0.3.5.0 changelog.
- Install a current graphics driver. Get the driver from your GPU manufacturer’s current release page. MADFINGER’s May 2024 guide recommends updating, but its card-specific suggestions are not a reason to install an older driver today. MADFINGER’s performance guide.
- Compare supported upscaling options. The May 2024 guide suggests DLSS for NVIDIA RTX 40-series cards, FSR for AMD cards, and XeSS for Intel cards, and discusses frame-generation options. Those are period-specific recommendations; available choices can change with game updates and hardware. Compare image clarity and smoothness on your own PC rather than assuming one option is always best.
- Check whether the hitch is temporary or recurring. MADFINGER says short frame lags may occur during initial gameplay or when visiting some locations for the first time. A brief first-traversal hitch is not the same as repeated freezes, persistent stutter, or a crash; recurring problems warrant further troubleshooting.
- Confirm the PC meets the published requirements. Steam lists an SSD as required, alongside 40 GB of available space. If the game is on a hard drive, an SSD may bring the system in line with that requirement, but Steam’s listing does not establish that an SSD upgrade cures stuttering.
- Document persistent symptoms before reporting them. Note your CPU, GPU and RAM, resolution, graphics preset, upscaler, whether the hitch happens only on a first visit or repeatedly, and whether it began after an update. This is a practical way to make a report specific, not an official required checklist. MADFINGER directs players to support in patch communications.
What the game’s patches say about stuttering
Patch 0.3.5.0: rendering and hitching work
In Patch 0.3.5.0, released November 6, 2025, MADFINGER moved Gray Zone Warfare to Unreal Engine 5.5 and said the rendering changes allowed more parallel work, improving performance particularly on mid- and lower-end CPUs. The update added the hardware-based benchmark and described work to reduce hitching. The developer also reported reducing VRAM use by about 400 MB and RAM use by about 2 GB; these are update figures from MADFINGER, not guaranteed savings on every PC. Read the Patch 0.3.5.0 changelog.
The same changelog lists fixes and optimizations touching shader pre-caching, cloud and reflection calculations, resource allocation, asset streaming, network-spawned characters and loot, sun and moon updates, long-distance bullets, particles, capture events, and streamed vending machines. That range of causes is why changing one graphics option may not resolve every hitch.
Update 0.4 and patches 0.4.6.0/0.4.7.0
Update 0.4, titled Spearhead and released March 31, 2026, reports improved performance on lower-end GPUs, lower memory use, reworked scope rendering, server-performance improvements, and reduced hitching during shooting. These are developer-reported changes, not independent GPU-by-GPU measurements. Read the Update 0.4 changelog.

The July 20, 2026 changelog for patches 0.4.6.0 and 0.4.7.0 recommended NVIDIA driver 610.62 at that time and re-enabled the DLSS sharpness slider. The driver number is historical guidance, not a current requirement. It also does not establish that a particular DLSS setting will work best on every system. Read the 0.4.6.0 and 0.4.7.0 changelog.
Check your PC against Steam’s requirements
Steam’s listing is a compatibility reference, not an FPS promise. Its published requirements include Windows 10 64-bit, an AVX2-capable CPU, DirectX 12, broadband internet, an SSD, and 40 GB of available storage. The listed GPU models are examples of the minimum and recommended tiers, not a promise of a particular frame rate. Consider an SSD only if you lack suitable SSD storage or need the listed space; check your PC’s interface and form factor before buying. The requirements alone do not show that moving the game to an SSD will cure shader-compilation or other hitches.

- Describe when it happens: first visit to an area, shooting, repeated traversal, or continuously.
- Record your hardware, resolution, preset, and upscaler so the configuration is clear.
- Note whether it began after a game update, then compare against the current in-game settings and current driver from your GPU maker.
- Report recurring freezes, crashes, or persistent hitching through the support route MADFINGER provides in its patch communications.
As of October 4, 2026, the official news page lists an Update 0.5 teaser dated October 1, 2026; a teaser is not evidence that a new performance patch has shipped. Check the live game and MADFINGER’s news page for later changes. The available sources do not establish a controlled, independent comparison of DLSS, FSR, XeSS, or GPU-by-GPU performance, so no one mode or patch figure should be treated as a universal result.
