Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor Starfield performance problems on PC, start with Bethesda’s checks: confirm your PC meets the published requirements, install the game on an SSD, update your graphics drivers, disable overlays, verify the game files, and make sure the game is using the intended GPU and power profile. Then adjust settings or upscaling one change at a time. There is no universal best preset: the right trade-off depends on whether your system is limited by its CPU or GPU, your target resolution, and the image quality you are willing to give up.
Start with the checks that can fix performance without changing graphics
Bethesda Support says most Starfield performance issues can be attributed to hardware, but its troubleshooting guidance also points to software and configuration problems. Work through these checks before buying hardware or installing an optimization mod.
- Check the published requirements. Compare your processor, graphics card, memory, and available storage with the Starfield Steam listing, which specifies an SSD. Meeting a listed tier does not guarantee a particular frame rate or graphics preset.
- Install Starfield on an SSD and update your graphics driver. Bethesda’s PC performance troubleshooting guidance recommends both steps.
- Disable overlays and verify the game files. Try turning off the Steam Overlay or Xbox Game Bar, then use your game launcher’s file-verification option.
- Check GPU assignment and power settings. On a laptop or multi-GPU PC, ensure Starfield is assigned to the intended primary GPU rather than integrated graphics, and check that a power-saving profile is not limiting it.
- Reduce competing workload. Close applications that use substantial CPU or memory. If you are troubleshooting crashes as well as slow performance, Bethesda recommends removing mods during diagnosis.
Change one thing at a time and compare the same location or route. Note the resolution, upscaling mode, graphics settings, and result; otherwise, it is difficult to tell which change helped.
Choose settings based on the bottleneck
A setting that improves performance in a GPU-limited scene may do little when the CPU is the constraint. The most detailed cited settings testing is GamersNexus’s guide, published September 14, 2023 and last updated November 4, 2023. Its results compare particular GPU-bound and CPU-bound situations, not every PC or later game version.

| Setting or condition | What the 2023 tests found | How to use that finding |
|---|---|---|
| Volumetric lighting | One of the largest performance impacts in the guide’s GPU-bound test. | Try reducing it if the GPU is the limit and you need more performance; compare the visual change in your usual play areas. |
| Shadow quality | Also among the largest impacts in the GPU-bound test. | Test a lower setting before broadly reducing every option. |
| Crowd density | Mattered more in the guide’s CPU-bound conditions. | If the processor is limiting performance, test crowd density rather than assuming GPU-heavy settings are the answer. |
| Grass quality | Was particularly impactful in grassy areas. | Compare in the locations where you notice slowdowns; results may differ in other environments. |
GamersNexus described visual-impact ratings as partly subjective. These findings are useful starting points, not a current universal preset. Lower a setting, repeat the same scene, and keep the change only if the performance improvement is worth its image-quality cost.
Use resolution and upscaling deliberately
Lowering render resolution can improve performance when the GPU is the bottleneck, but it can also make the image softer or less detailed. GamersNexus reported that, in its 2023 RTX 4060 test, setting render scale to 79% produced 18% higher average FPS than its baseline; 70% render scale produced a 24% improvement. Those figures describe that test platform and configuration, not an expected gain on another PC.
Starfield has official upscaling options rather than requiring a third-party mod for these features. Bethesda’s DLSS support guidance describes DLSS Super Resolution, DLAA, NVIDIA Reflex Low Latency, and DLSS Frame Generation on compatible NVIDIA cards. Steam’s Starfield update notes also list Intel XeSS support.

- OC Mode : 1500 MHz (Boost Clock)/Default Mode : 1470 MHz (Boost Clock)
- Upscaling: renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs the image for display. Compare image clarity as well as performance.
- DLAA: an NVIDIA option listed by Bethesda alongside DLSS features; it is not the same objective as lowering render resolution to gain performance.
- Frame generation: creates additional displayed frames. Do not treat a higher displayed frame count as equivalent to a hardware-independent increase in rendered performance; assess responsiveness and visual artifacts as well.
Match sync settings to the frame-generation feature
VSync recommendations differ between Bethesda’s feature guidance, so use the setting for the feature you have enabled rather than applying one rule to every upscaler.

| Feature | Bethesda’s stated guidance | Relevant display consideration |
|---|---|---|
| FSR 3 | Bethesda Game Studios recommends VSync on for the best experience. | The announcement also recommends using a VRR monitor. VRR is a display pairing, not a way to increase rendering performance. |
| DLSS Frame Generation | Bethesda Support says VSync needs to be off to see the benefit while Frame Generation is active. | Check the game’s behavior on your setup rather than assuming the FSR 3 guidance applies. |
Bethesda’s FSR 3 recommendation appears in its February 7, 2024 update announcement. Feature compatibility and display behavior depend on your hardware and setup.

A mod may alter settings or game behavior, but its gains are specific to the tested hardware, configuration, and game version. In GamersNexus’s 2023 tests, an optimization mod changed average performance from 44 to 51 FPS on Ultra in its test, while the cited Medium result was a 12% improvement. These are historical benchmark results, not predictions for current systems or assurance that a mod remains compatible after subsequent game updates.

Before installing a mod, first establish a repeatable unmodded baseline. Add only one mod, repeat the same scene, and remove it if the result is worse or introduces instability. For troubleshooting crashes, Bethesda advises removing mods as part of diagnosis. Do not use an optimization mod’s reported result as evidence that it will improve performance on your PC.
Tell a real FPS gain from a smoother or sharper presentation
When comparing changes, keep the test scene and route consistent and record the settings. Consider more than the average frame rate: look at low frame rates, perceived smoothness, image quality, responsiveness, and any artifacts. An upscaler can change image quality at a lower render resolution, while frame generation can affect displayed frames without making the underlying rendering workload disappear.
If performance remains poor after the basic checks, lower one demanding setting at a time and retest. If the machine is below the published requirements or testing indicates a hardware bottleneck, hardware may be relevant; these findings do not establish a current best-value graphics card or a guaranteed benefit from an upgrade.
