A player-reported workaround is to build a rough, flyable ship with essential parts, save the game, and finish the design afterward—but it is anecdotal, not an official feature or guaranteed fix. This is separate from trouble creating or loading an ordinary game save.
Can you save an unfinished ship design in Starfield?
The November 2023 report from PiunikaWeb describes players asking for a way to preserve a ship build mid-process. It relays one player’s workaround: attach the essential components to make a rough ship, save the game, then return to the ship builder to complete the design. That is a player report, not a Bethesda-endorsed method, and the available information does not verify that it works across every platform or game version.
Bethesda’s June 9, 2024 Update 1.12.30 notes list two ship-builder-related fixes: an issue that could occur when modifying the player’s ship at The Key, and an issue with the “Ships Modified” stat incrementing when entering the ship builder. Neither note says that an unfinished design can be saved.
The current official status of a save-in-progress ship-design feature is unconfirmed by these sources. The 2023 report’s statement that there was no official acknowledgment describes the situation at that time, not Bethesda’s position today.

What to do if the workaround is useful
- Make the design viable first. Add the essential components needed for a rough ship, rather than leaving the build as an incomplete collection of parts.
- Save the game. The reported workaround is to save after creating that rough ship.
- Return to the ship builder later. Continue the design when you have time. The report does not guarantee that this approach preserves every unfinished detail, so treat it as a workaround to try rather than a reliable design-save system.
If Starfield will not create or load a normal save
A normal save failure is a different problem from wanting to preserve an unfinished ship layout. For PC save problems, Bethesda’s save troubleshooting guide recommends platform-specific steps. It includes restarting, checking for special characters in the Windows user profile or writable folder paths, verifying or repairing game files, temporarily disabling OneDrive or Google Drive sync if used, checking permissions and security software, and updating Windows and the relevant game platform. Follow the guide for your setup; these steps are not a guaranteed fix.
For players using both an Xbox console and the Xbox App for PC, Bethesda advises signing into the same account on both, letting cloud sync finish, making a manual save on one platform, and then opening the other platform to trigger another sync. The support article gives the full platform-specific instructions.

If a save file is corrupted
Bethesda states: “Save games that are corrupted cannot be repaired.” Its corrupted-save guidance recommends saving frequently in alternating slots, backing up saves externally where possible, keeping adequate free storage, and avoiding an excessive number of save slots because each uses storage.
