For a more stable PlayStation Portal Remote Play session, connect your PS5 to the router with Ethernet, connect the Portal to 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and reduce weak signal and competing network activity. PlayStation lists 5 Mbps upload and download as the minimum and recommends at least 15 Mbps in each direction for a better experience, but meeting those speeds alone does not guarantee a smooth stream.
1. Connect the PS5 to the router with Ethernet
PlayStation recommends a wired Ethernet connection between the PS5 and router for the best Portal Remote Play experience. This avoids relying on Wi-Fi for the console’s connection. If Ethernet is not practical and the PS5 must use Wi-Fi, connect the PS5 and Portal to the same Wi-Fi network. PlayStation’s Portal Remote Play setup guidance does not specify a required cable category or brand.
2. Connect the Portal to 5 GHz Wi-Fi
PlayStation recommends connecting the Portal to a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network. Some routers show separate names for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz; others combine them under one name and automatically move devices between bands. That automatic feature is often called band steering. PlayStation recommends disabling band steering, if the router offers the option, while connecting the Portal.
Router settings differ by model and internet provider. If you cannot find the band or steering controls, consult the router or ISP instructions rather than guessing. The PS Portal manual lists IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac support; that specification is not a guarantee that a particular router setup will improve streaming.

3. Improve the Wi-Fi signal around the Portal and PS5
Move the Portal and PS5 closer to the router where practical, and reduce obstacles between them and the access point. Walls and distance can weaken a wireless connection. PlayStation also recommends checking whether Wi-Fi works properly on other devices, which can help distinguish a broader home-network problem from an issue limited to Portal play. See PlayStation’s Remote Play connection troubleshooting steps.
4. Pause downloads and other network-heavy activity
Pause downloads running on devices connected to Wi-Fi and check whether other devices are using the network heavily. This is a practical first adjustment before changing router hardware: PlayStation specifically includes pausing downloads in its troubleshooting guidance.

5. Check upload and download speeds—but also check stability
PlayStation’s troubleshooting page states a minimum connection speed of 5 Mbps for both upload and download, and recommends at least 15 Mbps for each for best performance. Its Portal product page likewise says at least 5 Mbps is required and recommends 15 Mbps for a better play experience. These are PlayStation’s stated guidelines, not a promise of smooth play: its product page notes that connection quality and availability may vary with the network environment.
If your connection meets those speed figures but Remote Play still stutters or disconnects, try the stability steps again: check another device’s Wi-Fi, play nearer the router, pause downloads, and use Ethernet for the PS5 if possible. The cited PlayStation guidance does not set a specific latency, jitter, or packet-loss threshold, so a speed test alone cannot fully diagnose the cause.

6. Know when the network is outside your control
On public Wi-Fi, congestion, signal quality, or login restrictions may limit Remote Play. PlayStation says public Wi-Fi quality may be outside the player’s control and that the network environment affects the experience. The Portal supports public Wi-Fi where available, but changing its settings cannot guarantee that a restricted or overloaded hotspot will work well.

Try the connection, band, placement, and download adjustments first. If the PS5 cannot reach the router over Ethernet, a suitable Ethernet cable can enable PlayStation’s recommended wired setup; PlayStation does not require a particular cable specification. If coverage remains poor around your home after placement and configuration changes, a router or mesh system may be worth considering, but the official guidance does not establish that a new router is generally necessary or identify a particular model.
