Microsoft canceled the Perfect Dark reboot in July 2025 and closed The Initiative, the studio created to lead it. The game had been announced in 2020 and shown in a gameplay trailer in 2024, but Xbox never announced a release date or window. Microsoft cited a broad shift in priorities and resources; it has not published a detailed account of why this particular project was canceled.
How the reboot began
Announced as The Initiative’s first game
Xbox announced Perfect Dark on December 10, 2020, as the first project from The Initiative. Xbox described it as a secret-agent thriller set in a near-future world, while noting that the team was sharing early ideas. Crystal Dynamics joined development
The Initiative developed the reboot in partnership with Crystal Dynamics. Contemporary reporting on the cancellation said the studio shutdown also ended that partnership. Game Informer’s cancellation report.
What the 2024 gameplay footage showed—and did not show
At the 2024 Xbox Games Showcase, Xbox released the reboot’s first public gameplay footage. It showed Joanna Dark using gadgets, stealth, and melee takedowns in a first-person game. Xbox did not give the game a release window. A trailer showing work in progress is not evidence that the project was close to completion, and it was not a public playable demo. Xbox canceled the game and closed The Initiative
On July 2, 2025, Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty said in an internal message reproduced by Game Informer: “We have made the decision to stop development of Perfect Dark and Everwild as well as wind down several unannounced projects across our portfolio.” The message also said The Initiative was closing. Game Informer’s report, including Booty’s message.
Why did Microsoft cancel it?
Booty said the decisions “reflect a broader effort to adjust priorities and focus resources to set up our teams for greater success within a changing industry landscape.” That is Xbox’s stated portfolio-level rationale. It does not identify a specific development problem or provide a project-by-project postmortem. Reports about internal difficulties should not be treated as confirmed causes on the basis of the company’s statement.
Was there an attempt to revive the reboot?
In September 2025, Windows Central, citing Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, reported that Xbox and Embracer, Crystal Dynamics’ owner, explored finding another publisher after development stopped. The report said discussions with Take-Two nearly produced a deal but fell apart over uncertainty about long-term ownership of the Perfect Dark intellectual property. No. The reboot was canceled before release, and Xbox had never announced a release window. The public 2024 footage remains evidence that gameplay was being developed, not that the game was finished or available to play.
