You can adjust Xbox privacy settings on Xbox.com or on the console. For a child account, a parent manages privacy and online-safety permissions through the Microsoft family group; use Microsoft Family Safety separately for screen-time limits, content filters and purchase controls. These settings are separate, so allowing multiplayer does not automatically allow every kind of chat or social activity.
Where to change Xbox privacy settings
Microsoft supports managing Xbox privacy settings either online or from the console. On the web, go to Xbox privacy and online safety settings. For family-group management, use Microsoft Family. Microsoft’s Xbox Family Hub links to both services.
On a child account, a parent or organizer in the Microsoft family group manages the child’s Xbox privacy and online settings. Review the settings using the family organizer’s account, rather than assuming the child can change restrictions independently.
Choose social permissions individually
Xbox privacy controls cover distinct activities. Set them to fit the child’s age, maturity and your family’s expectations; an online-safety setting is not a single all-or-nothing switch.

- VERSATILE CONNECTIVITY — Connect via USB-C for plug-and-play on console and PC, or quickly pair and switch between supported devices with XBOX Wireless and Bluetooth support.
- BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.
- Multiplayer: Decide whether the account can join multiplayer games.
- Communication: Set who can communicate with the player. This is separate from permission to play multiplayer.
- Clubs: Choose whether the account can create or join clubs.
- Broadcasting: Decide whether the player can broadcast gameplay.
- Friends: Control whether the player can add friends.
Microsoft lists these as separate controls in its Xbox Family Hub. If you want a child to play online but limit contact, review communication permissions independently instead of relying on the multiplayer setting alone.
Set Xbox screen-time limits with Microsoft Family Safety
Screen-time controls are managed through Microsoft Family Safety, not the Xbox privacy page. An organizer can configure them at family.microsoft.com or in the Microsoft Family Safety app. Microsoft’s screen-time instructions describe choosing a family member, opening the Xbox platform tab, and setting permitted time by day and time range.

- Sign in as the family organizer on family.microsoft.com or in the Microsoft Family Safety app.
- Select the family member whose Xbox use you want to manage.
- Open the Xbox platform tab.
- Set the allowed time for each day and the permitted time range.
Xbox screen time continues to count while the player remains signed in, even if the console is not actively being used. Include signing out in your household routine when a play session ends; otherwise the account may continue using its allowance.
Require approval for Xbox purchases

Age-rated content and app access are separate from social permissions. Review content limits alongside multiplayer, chat, club, broadcast and friend settings so that the account’s access reflects the rules you intend to set. Microsoft’s Xbox Family Hub describes these broader privacy, content, purchase and family-control categories.

A practical review checklist
- Decide who may communicate with the player, independently of whether multiplayer is allowed.
- Set multiplayer, clubs, broadcasts and friend-adding permissions separately.
- Review app access and age-rated content limits.
- Use Microsoft Family Safety for daily time allowances and time windows.
- Turn on parent approval for purchases if required.
- Have the player sign out when finished so signed-in time does not continue to count.
