The short answer: upgrade the Flame Altar
Enshrouded does not use a separate “building-range” tool, perk or workstation. The protected construction volume is controlled by the Flame Altar. To enlarge a base, stand at its altar, interact with it and select Upgrade Altar. The altar then asks for a Shroud resource. Once the upgrade is accepted, the construction boundary around that specific altar becomes larger.

This is separate from the world’s Flame Level. Flame Level is shared across the world, while the build-area upgrade belongs to the individual altar. Raising the Flame Level therefore does not automatically enlarge every base. If you build at several locations, each location must have its own altar upgrades.
The practical limit of one altar is the final cube shown by the upgrade progression. For a settlement wider than that cube, place additional altars and make their construction volumes overlap. An altar that merely sits near another altar, without an overlapping boundary, is reported not to form a continuous build area.

Reported Flame Altar area tiers and materials
The following values are reported by the fan-run Official Enshrouded Wiki and repeated in community posts. Dimensions describe the approximate width, length and height of the protected construction volume, not the size of a flat square on the ground.

Each reported upgrade adds roughly 40 units along every axis. The table is a planning reference rather than a guaranteed permanent specification. Deltia’s Gaming describes only three area sizes—40, 80 and 120—and does not list the 160 tier, while a Steam discussion and the newer wiki data include level 4 and its Shroud Nexus requirement. Check the altar interface in your current game before spending rare materials.
How to upgrade an altar step by step
- Choose the altar that will anchor the build. Area upgrades are per altar, so upgrading one base does not enlarge a different base elsewhere in the world.
- Travel inside that altar’s current construction volume. If you cannot build at the intended spot, move close enough to an altar that already covers it or relocate the altar first.
- Interact with the Flame Altar. Use the normal interaction prompt while facing the altar.
- Open “Upgrade Altar.” This is the altar-management option used for expanding its construction area.
- Read the next tier shown by the game. Confirm both the destination level and the material displayed on the current interface. The reported sequence is listed above, but the game’s value is the one that applies to your installed version.
- Supply the requested Shroud material. Early expansion uses Shroud Cores; the reported top tier uses Shroud Nexus. If the button is unavailable, place the missing material in your character’s accessible inventory and check that you are upgrading the intended altar.
- Confirm the upgrade. After the altar accepts the material, move toward the former edge and test a simple build piece. A successful placement beyond the old boundary confirms that the volume expanded.
Upgrade one tier at a time. This makes it easier to identify whether a missing resource, an interaction problem or a boundary misunderstanding is preventing the next expansion. It also avoids assuming that a higher tier is available when a patch or world state presents a different progression.
What Shroud Cores and Shroud Nexus are doing here
Shroud Cores
Guides and player reports consistently describe bosses as the source of Shroud Cores. The wording differs on whether a particular boss always awards a particular amount, so plan around the confirmed fact that bosses drop Shroud Cores rather than a fixed per-boss count. Keep the cores available when you return to the altar; the upgrade screen is the authoritative check for how many are required in your version.

Shroud Nexus for the reported final tier
The level-4 entry in the newer tier list requires 5 Shroud Nexus. Because one established guide stops at level 3, treat the Nexus step as version-sensitive until your own altar displays it. Do not consume Nexus for another purpose solely because a guide lists a level-4 cost; verify the destination level and quantity in the actual upgrade menu.
Understanding the three-dimensional building boundary
The values are written as cubes—40×40×40, 80×80×80 and so on—because the boundary has height as well as width and length. A base can therefore fail in two different ways:

- A wall, foundation or decoration may be outside the horizontal footprint even when its height is acceptable.
- A tall tower, roof or upper floor may exceed the vertical limit even though its ground-level footprint is inside the altar’s area.
When a placement is rejected near an edge, move the object toward the altar in small increments rather than assuming the entire base is too large. Test the lowest foundation first, then check the highest planned floor. A level upgrade enlarges all three axes according to the reported figures; it is not a height-only or width-only upgrade.
Construction boundaries are also easier to misread on uneven terrain. A slope, cliff or valley can make the edge appear closer from one direction. Use a temporary, inexpensive building piece as a marker at several points around the perimeter. Marking the old boundary before upgrading gives you a visible comparison afterward and helps reveal whether a failed placement is caused by terrain, support rules or the altar volume.

Building a settlement larger than one altar
Use overlapping altar volumes
For a town that exceeds the final reported 160-unit cube, place another Flame Altar before reaching the first altar’s edge. The community method is to overlap the two construction volumes. The overlap creates a continuous region in which you can build from one section into the next.
- Upgrade the first altar as far as your materials and game version allow.
- Walk toward the planned extension and identify a position where a second altar can cover the new section while still intersecting the first altar’s boundary.
- Place the second altar in that overlap. If the second altar is completely outside the first volume, you may not be able to place it or the two areas may remain disconnected.
- Upgrade the second altar separately. Its area does not inherit the first altar’s tier.
- Repeat the overlap pattern for additional wings, courtyards or industrial areas.
Think of each altar as a tile in a chain. Every new tile must touch the previous one through an overlapping build volume. A chain with a gap is not the same as a chain with a narrow overlap: leave enough shared space to place foundations, doors and access routes without having a seam cut through an important room.

Plan overlaps around the parts of the base that matter
Do not put the overlap through a single doorway or a thin decorative wall. Put it through a broad, expendable area such as a road, courtyard or storage yard. That gives you room to correct the second altar’s position if the visible boundary differs from your estimate.
Keep vertical structures in mind. Two altars can overlap on the ground while a high tower rises beyond one altar’s vertical range. If the upper levels are important, raise the relevant altar tier or position the tower so that its full height remains inside one of the overlapping volumes.

What the reported 320×320×160 example means
A player-described multi-altar base was roughly 320 wide, 320 long and 160 high. That is an example of what overlapping altars can achieve in a particular layout, not a published game limit or a guaranteed maximum. The useful lesson is that multiple upgraded altars can create a much larger connected settlement; the example should not be treated as a universal dimension.
Moving an altar to extend or reorganize a base
Community guides say an altar can be picked up and placed farther away, and players report moving one at any time. Relocating an altar can help when a base outgrows its original footprint or when the first placement was too close to a cliff, shoreline or planned road.
- Remove or secure any construction that depends on the altar’s current position.
- Pick up the altar using the game’s normal placement interaction.
- Choose a new position that covers the intended build and, if it is part of a chain, overlaps the neighboring altar.
- Place it and test the boundary with a temporary build piece before committing to a large extension.
Whether an altar keeps its core-based area upgrades after being extinguished or moved is not firmly established. One player post claims that the upgrade can be lost, but that report is unverified. Before relocating a highly upgraded altar, record its level, confirm what the current interface shows and avoid moving it during a critical construction session unless you are prepared for the possibility that the game asks for the materials again.

The altar will not offer an upgrade
- Confirm that you are interacting with the Flame Altar itself, not another nearby object.
- Open the altar-management screen and select the exact “Upgrade Altar” option.
- Check the material shown for the next tier. A Shroud Core and a Shroud Nexus are different requirements.
- Make sure the required item is available to the character performing the interaction.
- Look for a version difference. The reported level-4 tier is absent from at least one guide, so the menu in your game may present a different progression.
A piece still will not place after upgrading
- Move several steps toward the altar and try a temporary foundation. This distinguishes an edge problem from a support or terrain problem.
- Check the object’s highest point. A roof, antenna or upper floor can exceed the vertical axis even when the foundation is inside.
- Test the same piece inside the old, known-safe area. If it fails there too, the cause is not the range upgrade.
- For a multi-altar base, confirm that the second altar’s boundary actually overlaps the first rather than merely appearing close on the ground.
The second altar cannot be placed
Move it back toward the first altar until the placement preview intersects the first altar’s protected volume. A non-overlapping altar chain is reported to fail to link. Once it is placed, test a build piece in the shared region before moving farther away.

The area seems smaller after moving or extinguishing an altar
Do not assume that the upgrade is permanently retained. The effect of extinguishing or moving an upgraded altar has conflicting community reports. Reopen the altar menu, note the displayed level and compare a test placement with the boundary you marked before the move. If the game asks for the upgrade material again, follow the current in-game requirement rather than an older guide.

Start with the initial 40×40×40 volume as a compact core: sleeping space, crafting, storage and the altar itself. Before laying out a large outer wall, decide whether the finished base can fit inside the final single-altar cube or whether it will need a second altar. That decision determines where roads, entrances and utility buildings should go.
Use the reported progression as a milestone plan:
- Starting tier: establish the essential rooms and mark the initial perimeter.
- First expansion: reserve room for workshops or a larger central hall once the first Shroud Core is available.
- Second expansion: extend the main structure after collecting the additional cores shown by the altar menu.
- Top reported tier: use the displayed Shroud Nexus requirement only after confirming that your version exposes level 4.
Build temporary markers at the projected edge before investing in a permanent foundation. The reported increments are 40 units per axis, but terrain, placement rules and future patches can make a visual estimate imperfect. Markers let you move a planned wall without demolishing an entire district.
Patch and source cautions
The figures available for this guide come from community material rather than an official Keen Games page dedicated to build-area costs. The fan-run Official Enshrouded Wiki lists four tiers, while Deltia’s Gaming lists three area upgrades. A Steam post agrees with the 1 Shroud Core, 5 Shroud Core and 5 Shroud Nexus sequence, but player posts are not a substitute for the current game interface.
There is also no confirmed evidence that the 2026 update changed these area values. One guide discusses Update 7 in connection with Flame Level 9, not a new altar-area progression. That distinction matters: a higher world Flame Level does not establish a larger construction cube.
