To improve CS:GO performance on Windows 11, first check that the game is using the intended GPU, close unnecessary background apps, then lower demanding video settings one at a time and compare results in the same scene. There is no universal setting or guaranteed FPS boost: the right change depends on your hardware, game mode and performance bottleneck.
What to expect from CS:GO’s system requirements
Steam’s CS:GO support page lists legacy minimum Windows requirements: Windows 7/Vista/XP, an Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 or AMD Phenom X3 8750 or better, 2 GB of RAM, a 256 MB or larger DirectX 9-compatible graphics card supporting Pixel Shader 3.0, DirectX 9.0c, and 15 GB of free storage. Those are minimums for the legacy game, not a modern high-FPS target. Steam also states that its client has supported Windows 10 and later since January 1, 2024.
Steam Support cautions that “Simply meeting the system requirements does not mean you’ll have high FPS or strong in-game performance.” Performance can vary with the PC’s hardware and software configuration, so a low counter does not by itself tell you which component or setting is responsible.
Establish a repeatable baseline before changing settings
Make changes in a way that lets you tell whether they helped. Pick the same map or scene, use the same resolution and display mode, and compare under similar conditions. If you have an FPS or frame-time measurement tool, note average FPS and frame-time consistency—not just the highest number. A higher FPS counter does not automatically mean steadier frame delivery or lower input latency.

- Change one setting at a time, then repeat the comparison.
- Keep a note of the original setting so you can restore it.
- Keep a change only if the repeatable result improves without making the game less stable or smooth.
Make reversible Windows 11 changes first
Check the game’s graphics preference
If your PC has more than one GPU, Windows 11 can select a per-app graphics preference. Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, add or select the game, choose Options, then select High performance if you want Windows to prefer the high-performance GPU. Microsoft also lists Let Windows decide and Power saving. Confirm you selected the actual game executable, save the preference, and restart the game before comparing. On a laptop, power and thermal conditions can also affect performance; this setting alone does not guarantee a particular result.
Try windowed-game optimizations only in a supported mode
Windows 11’s Optimizations for windowed games feature applies to compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless-windowed mode. Microsoft says it transitions compatible games from legacy blt presentation to flip model and is intended to reduce frame latency. The feature is not a promise of more FPS for every CS:GO installation or display mode. If you use one of the applicable modes, enable it and compare; do not assume it applies to fullscreen play. Reduce unnecessary background load
Close applications and overlays you do not need while playing, then test again. Steam Support recommends removing unnecessary startup programs and stopping unneeded applications through Task Manager. Close only apps you recognize and do not disable security software or end unfamiliar processes as an FPS tweak. Steam’s broader guidance is in Troubleshooting Game Performance Issues – Software.
Test Windows Game Mode on your own PC
The older Steam Community guide for this topic suggests checking Game Mode but describes different user experiences rather than controlled tests. If you want to try it, compare with Game Mode on and off in the same scene, keep the setting that gives you the more consistent result, and avoid treating another player’s outcome as a guarantee.

Adjust CS:GO’s graphics settings incrementally
Start with the game’s own video settings. Steam Support advises reducing demanding options when performance is poor and notes that raising resolution or graphics options beyond what a system can handle can reduce FPS. Lower resolution only if you are willing to trade image clarity for a lighter rendering load. After any change, compare in your baseline scene rather than changing several options at once.
The community guide matching this article’s original title recommends reducing shadow and effect detail and lowering multisampling anti-aliasing when performance is constrained. Treat these as sensible options to test, not official best settings for all PCs. Texture-filtering preferences in that guide are personal; adjust them only if you want to compare image quality and performance on your own hardware.

If you no longer know which video options you changed, Steam Support suggests launching a Valve game with -autoconfig as an initial troubleshooting step to restore reasonable video settings. It is a reset aid, not an FPS-boost command. Once the game has reset, remove the option and tune settings gradually.
Balance FPS, refresh rate and smoothness
Rendered FPS, monitor refresh rate, frame-time consistency and input latency are related but not interchangeable. A frame cap or synchronization setting can make motion look more consistent while limiting the FPS counter; it should not be presented as a way to increase raw FPS.

Valve’s June 25, 2024 guidance on setting the display to its highest refresh rate and combining G-Sync, V-Sync and NVIDIA Reflex where supported appears in Counter-Strike 2 release notes, not as a CS:GO-specific FPS promise. Valve says that combination limits FPS to the display’s refresh rate or slightly below and is generally smooth-looking and low-latency when available. Treat that as CS2 guidance and a smoothness/latency trade-off, not a guaranteed CS:GO performance fix. See the June 25, 2024 Counter-Strike 2 release notes.
When hardware may be the bottleneck
Consider an upgrade only after software and settings checks suggest a hardware limit. Steam Support identifies a graphics-card or memory upgrade as possible ways to affect gameplay performance, but does not promise a universal uplift. A graphics card is relevant only if the game is GPU-limited; check compatibility, available power, physical dimensions and the rest of the system before buying. Additional RAM is likewise conditional on the system’s needs. Without your PC specifications and a diagnosis, no particular component or FPS gain can be recommended.
A high-refresh-rate monitor is a separate decision: it can display more updates per second when the PC and game provide them, but buying a monitor does not make the PC render more frames. Treat it as a display capability upgrade, not an FPS fix.
Which popular tweaks should you treat cautiously?
The older community guide also lists launch options and commands such as -cl_forcepreload, -nojoy, +r_dynamic 0 and fps_max, as well as changing the game’s process priority. The sources available do not establish these as verified FPS improvements for a current Windows 11 and legacy CS:GO setup. Some concern older game behavior, loading or networking rather than frame rendering; process-priority changes can also have side effects. Do not apply a bundle of commands or raise process priority on the assumption that it will improve performance. The community guide is a record of recommendations, not controlled proof.
