To raise limits, install the Oxide (uMod) mod framework, add the StackSizeController plugin, let it create its configuration, then set multipliers in oxide/config/StackSizeController.json or through the plugin’s console commands. Reload the plugin after changing values. The plugin documentation lists 2,147,483,647 as its maximum stack size.

Why server.cfg cannot change Rust stack sizes
In an unmodified Rust server, item stack limits are hardcoded rather than exposed as a server configuration variable. Adding a line to server.cfg, changing a launch argument, or editing another vanilla setting therefore does not increase the number of items that can occupy one inventory slot.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe practical route is a server-side plugin. Oxide, also known as uMod, provides the framework that lets plugins alter game behavior. StackSizeController, listed on uMod as a plugin by AnExiledDev, applies larger limits globally, by category, or to individual items through its generated configuration.
This changes the rules for players connected to that modded server only. It does not alter Rust’s rules on unmodded servers, and clients do not install the plugin themselves.

What you need before making the change
- Server file access: You must be able to upload files and edit the server’s Oxide configuration directory, or have access to an administrator console that can run plugin commands.
- Oxide/uMod: StackSizeController requires the mod framework to be installed and loaded before the plugin can run.
- The plugin file: Obtain the current StackSizeController release from its uMod listing and place it in the server’s
oxide/pluginsdirectory. - A backup: Save a copy of the existing Oxide configuration before changing values. This gives you a rollback if a setting produces an unwanted result or a JSON edit prevents the plugin from loading.
- A maintenance window: The first installation and any restart or reload can interrupt players. Make the change while the server is empty or announce the planned maintenance.
Plugin version and Oxide/Rust compatibility can change over time. Check the current uMod listing and your server’s game build before deploying the plugin on a live server; compatibility dates are not fixed by the configuration method itself.
Install Oxide and StackSizeController
1. Install the Oxide/uMod framework
Install the Oxide build intended for your Rust server according to your host’s procedure. A successful installation creates an oxide directory alongside the server files. If that directory does not appear, the framework is not ready and StackSizeController will not load.
After installing Oxide, start the server and watch the startup output for Oxide initialization messages. Stop the server cleanly before copying the plugin file if your host recommends that workflow.
2. Upload the plugin
- Download the StackSizeController plugin file from its uMod listing.
- Open the Rust server’s
oxide/pluginsfolder. - Upload the plugin file there without changing its filename.
- Start the server.
Oxide scans the plugins directory during startup. If the plugin is accepted, it should be listed among the loaded plugins in the server console or in Oxide’s log output. If it is not listed, stop and resolve the loading problem before editing stack values.
3. Allow the plugin to generate its configuration
Start the server once with StackSizeController installed. The plugin uses that first load to create oxide/config/StackSizeController.json. Stop the server or use your host’s safe file-editing method before changing the file.
Do not look for stack settings in oxide/data/. Guides for this plugin identify the configuration directory, not the data directory, as the place for stack-size values.
Set multipliers in StackSizeController.json
Open oxide/config/StackSizeController.json in a text editor that preserves valid JSON. The generated file contains the plugin’s global, category, and per-item settings. Use the field names and nesting created by your installed release rather than copying a configuration from a different version.

Choose a multiplier
StackSizeController expects plain numbers. Enter 2 for a two-times multiplier or 5 for a five-times multiplier; do not write 2x or 5x. A multiplier changes the normal stack limit rather than representing a new absolute stack count.
For example, a server owner might choose a global value of 2 to reduce inventory pressure, then use category or item overrides for materials that should remain closer to their original limits. The exact item and category names are taken from the generated configuration, so copy them exactly, including capitalization and punctuation.
Edit the global setting first
The global setting is the broadest control. It is useful when the server’s design calls for a consistent increase across most items. Change only the numeric value, keep quotation marks and commas intact, and leave unrelated plugin options unchanged.
Recommended Free Tools
Before saving, check the file for common JSON errors:
- Every opening brace has a matching closing brace.
- Every property is separated from the next property by a comma, except the final property in an object.
- Numbers such as
2and5are not written with anxsuffix. - Item and category names remain inside quotation marks when the generated file uses quoted names.
Use category overrides for deliberate exceptions
Some vanilla categories have deliberately small limits. Applying one global multiplier can make those items more generous than intended, so category settings let you tune groups separately. Set a category multiplier after the global value when you want a different rule for that group.
Keep a written record of the categories you changed. That makes future resets and troubleshooting easier, especially when a category override appears to keep an item below the global value.
Use per-item settings for precise control
Per-item entries are the most granular option. They are appropriate when one resource, component, or consumable needs a different limit from the rest of its category. Add or edit the item only in the structure already present in the generated file. If an item appears more than once through inherited settings, the more specific entry may override the broader one; confirm the result in game rather than assuming the global value wins.

Save, then reload the plugin
After saving the JSON file, reload StackSizeController from the server console:
oxide.reload StackSizeController
Watch the console for a successful reload or a JSON parsing error. If the reload fails, restore the backup, correct the syntax, and try again. A reload applies the changed configuration without requiring a full server restart, although you should still verify the result after the next restart.
Set stack sizes with console commands
The plugin listing and hosting guides cite two commands for administrators with console access:
stacksizecontroller.setallstacks 2
stacksizecontroller.setstackcat [category name] [multiplier]
Change every category
stacksizecontroller.setallstacks 2 applies a two-times multiplier to all categories. Replace 2 with another plain number when appropriate. Because this command is broad, use it only when a server-wide change is intentional.
Change one category
stacksizecontroller.setstackcat [category name] [multiplier] targets one category. Replace both bracketed parts with the category name and numeric multiplier used by your plugin configuration. The brackets are notation for values you supply; do not type the brackets unless the category name itself requires them.
The commands above are reported in plugin documentation and guide snippets, but they were not verified against a live server in the available material. Treat the console as a quick administrative method, then inspect the generated configuration and test after a restart to confirm that the change persisted.
Configuration file or console command?
| Method | Best for | Granularity | Persistence check | Access required |
|---|---|---|---|---|
StackSizeController.json |
Repeatable server settings and planned changes | Global, category, and per-item values | Edits are intended to persist across restarts; validate the file after restarting | Shell, file manager, or host panel access |
setallstacks |
One broad change across categories | All categories | Check the configuration after restart; persistence of the command itself is not verified | Administrator console |
setstackcat |
Adjusting one category without editing the file manually | One category | Check the configuration after restart; persistence of the command itself is not verified | Administrator console |
Use the file when you need documented, per-item control. Use a command when you have console access and need a fast global or category change, but do not rely on a command alone until a restart confirms the setting remains.

Understand the maximum and practical limits
StackSizeController’s documentation identifies 2,147,483,647 as the maximum stack size, describing it as a hardcoded Rust limitation. That number is an upper boundary, not a recommendation for normal play. Extremely large stacks can remove inventory management entirely and may create awkward interfaces or economy problems even when the value is technically accepted.
Choose a value that matches the server’s gathering rates, storage availability, wipe schedule, and intended pacing. A two-times setting generally represents a modest reduction in slot pressure; a five-times setting is a much more aggressive change. Those are design examples, not universal balance recommendations.
When raising all stacks, pay special attention to categories that started with small vanilla limits. A global multiplier may affect them more than you expect. Category and per-item overrides exist so that you can preserve tighter limits for rare, powerful, or progression-sensitive items while still increasing ordinary building materials.
Verify the change in game
- Reload the plugin after editing the configuration, or run the selected console command.
- Join the server with an administrator account and obtain enough of a test item to exceed its old limit.
- Move the items into one inventory slot and confirm the displayed count increases beyond the vanilla value.
- Test an item from a category you customized separately; this catches category and per-item overrides that mask the global setting.
- Disconnect, restart the server during a maintenance window, reconnect, and repeat the test.
Test with ordinary items before changing live storage. If a stack does not increase, record the item name, its category, the multiplier you set, and whether the problem occurs before or after a restart. That information narrows the cause much faster than repeatedly changing unrelated values.

The value in server.cfg has no effect
That is expected for vanilla stack limits. Remove the unused setting and use Oxide/uMod with StackSizeController instead. Confirm that the oxide directory and plugin file exist before attempting configuration changes.
StackSizeController does not appear as loaded
Check that the plugin file is directly inside oxide/plugins, not in a second nested folder. Review the server console or Oxide log for a load error, then verify that Oxide itself initialized successfully. A plugin cannot process stack settings until the framework has loaded.
The configuration file was not created
Start the server once after uploading the plugin. If no file appears, inspect the plugin load output for an error and confirm that the server account can write to oxide/config. Do not manually create an unknown schema; the plugin should generate the structure appropriate to its release.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
The plugin reload reports invalid JSON
Restore the last known-good backup or compare the edited file with the generated copy. Look for a missing comma, an extra comma after the last property, mismatched braces, or a multiplier written as text such as 5x. Correct the syntax, save the file, and run oxide.reload StackSizeController again.
One item ignores the global multiplier
Inspect its category and per-item entries. A more specific setting may intentionally keep the item at another value. Make the desired override explicit in the generated configuration, reload the plugin, and test that item separately.
The command runs but the setting disappears after a restart
Command persistence is not established by the cited material. Treat the command as a runtime change until you verify otherwise. After executing it, inspect oxide/config/StackSizeController.json, save a persistent value there if the plugin exposes it, and confirm the result after restarting.
The plugin worked before a Rust or Oxide update
Plugin compatibility can depend on the current game and framework build. Check the StackSizeController listing for an updated release, read the startup error instead of repeatedly changing multipliers, and keep a backup of the last working configuration. If compatibility is not confirmed for your build, test on a separate server before applying the update to a live population.
A safe rollout checklist
- Announce the maintenance period and stop active building or storage operations.
- Back up
oxide/config/StackSizeController.jsonand any existing server configuration. - Confirm Oxide/uMod is loaded.
- Upload StackSizeController to
oxide/plugins. - Start once to generate the configuration.
- Set plain-number multipliers in the generated JSON, preserving its field names and structure.
- Reload with
oxide.reload StackSizeController. - Test a normal item, a customized category, and a per-item override if you use them.
- Restart and repeat the test to verify persistence.
- Record the final values so another administrator can reproduce or undo the change.
Recommended approach for most Rust servers
For a maintainable setup, use the generated JSON file as the source of truth. Apply a conservative global multiplier, then add category or per-item exceptions where vanilla limits are intentionally small or where your server economy depends on scarcity. Use console commands for temporary experiments or quick administrative changes, and transfer any setting you intend to keep into the configuration file after verifying it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The essential sequence is straightforward: vanilla server.cfg cannot raise stack limits; Oxide/uMod provides the plugin framework; StackSizeController supplies the controls; the generated file provides persistent, granular settings; and a reload plus post-restart test confirms that players are receiving the intended behavior.
