In Minecraft Java Edition, open Options > Video Settings and raise Render Distance. In Bedrock Edition, open Settings > Video and adjust Render Distance. Increase it in small steps and keep the highest value that runs smoothly on your device and in your world.
Change render distance in Java Edition
- Open the world, then select Options > Video Settings.
- Increase Render Distance a few chunks at a time.
- Play for a bit after each change. If the game becomes choppy, lower the setting to the last stable value.
Use Simulation Distance separately
Java Edition has a separate Simulation Distance slider in Video Settings. Render Distance controls how far away terrain is drawn; Simulation Distance controls how far entities, blocks, and fluids are updated. You can keep a higher visual distance while reducing the area the game simulates, which can lower CPU load. Mojang introduced this slider as a way to support higher render distances with less CPU load in its Java release notes.
Change render distance in Bedrock Edition
- From the start screen, open Settings > Video.
- Adjust Render Distance.
- Increase it gradually and check performance in your world.
Mojang’s Bedrock 1.21.100 changelog says the graphics mode and render-distance controls moved to the top of the Video settings page in that release. The precise layout can vary by device or later update.
What to do if increasing it causes lag
Rendering more distant terrain can cost performance. In the Java 1.21.9 notes, the Minecraft Java Team cautions: “FPS won’t improve much if most of your lag comes from things other than entities, like playing with high render distance while not being near many mobs.” In other words, a high render distance can itself contribute to lag even when few mobs are nearby. Lower it to the last smooth setting rather than assuming a hardware upgrade is necessary.

Reduce other Bedrock graphics demands
Minecraft Help recommends changing video settings when Bedrock graphics performance is poor. Its guidance describes Simple graphics mode as using the least system resources, Fancy as moderate, and Vibrant Visuals as the most demanding. It also suggests lowering FOV or disabling selected advanced visual features. See the official Bedrock graphics troubleshooting guide for available options and steps.
Check software and system requirements
If performance remains poor, Minecraft Help recommends updating the game and operating system, updating Windows graphics drivers, checking Windows minimum requirements, changing video settings, and disabling Bedrock add-ons to test whether they contribute to the issue. The same guide provides the applicable Bedrock troubleshooting steps.

Why your effective distance may be lower in multiplayer
Compare your local Video setting with the Realm or server configuration. Multiplayer configuration can affect the distance you experience, but the cited Minecraft guidance does not establish one server-side cap or a single cause that applies to every multiplayer setup.
There is no universal maximum established for all Minecraft editions and devices. For a narrowly scoped example, the Minecraft Java Team’s 26.3 Snapshot 9 announcement, published August 17, 2026, says Java Realm owners can raise render distance up to 25 chunks and configure render distance and simulation distance separately. That snapshot-specific Realm limit should not be treated as a general cap for stable Java releases, Bedrock, consoles, or other servers.
