To accept larger files in ownCloud, raise the limits in every layer that handles the request. Start with the PHP-FPM instance serving the web request: set upload_max_filesize and post_max_size to at least the intended file size, then check the Nginx or Apache request limit, temporary storage, destination free space, and timeout budget. The effective ceiling is the lowest limit anywhere along that path. Restart the affected services and verify the values from the web-serving PHP context before testing a file just above the old ceiling.

Why ownCloud still rejects a file after you change one setting

An upload travels through several independent controls. A browser or desktop client sends the request to the front-end web server; the server passes it to PHP-FPM; ownCloud writes temporary data and then moves the completed file into the user’s storage. Any layer can reject the request first. A successful change therefore requires a consistent limit at each layer, not just a larger number in one configuration file.

Think of the result as a minimum function:

effective maximum = lowest applicable web-server limit, PHP limit, ownCloud policy, quota, and available storage

A file can be smaller than your PHP setting and still fail because Nginx has a lower body-size limit, Apache terminates a slow request, the temporary filesystem fills, the user’s quota is exhausted, or the destination volume lacks space. Chunked uploads alter how requests are sent, but they do not remove storage, quota, or policy requirements.

Choose a target size before editing configuration

Decide the largest single file your users should be able to upload. Base that decision on storage policy and operational capacity rather than copying an example value. ownCloud’s documentation uses 16G as an example; it is not a universal ownCloud maximum and does not guarantee that a particular server can sustain a 16-gigabyte upload.

  • Allow headroom above the largest intended file so protocol overhead and rounding do not create an off-by-a-few-megabytes failure.
  • Estimate concurrent uploads, not only one file. Temporary files may exist for several transfers at once.
  • Check user and group quotas, the free space on the final storage volume, and any organization-wide policy that should remain lower than the technical ceiling.
  • Consider how long a slow connection may occupy a PHP worker and a web-server connection before selecting timeout values.

Find the PHP-FPM configuration that actually serves ownCloud

PHP has separate execution contexts. The php.ini used by a shell command can differ from the configuration loaded by PHP-FPM, which is the context handling a normal ownCloud web request. Editing only the CLI configuration can therefore appear to have no effect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Identify the PHP version and FPM pool

  1. Determine which PHP version is attached to the virtual host that serves ownCloud. Inspect the web-server site configuration and the socket or TCP endpoint used by its FastCGI pass-through. The service name commonly includes the version, such as php-fpm or a versioned php*-fpm service; use the name present on your operating system rather than assuming a particular version.
  2. Check the enabled FPM pool configuration for that service. Pool files can add or override values, so inspect both the main FPM configuration and the pool included by the ownCloud site.
  3. Use a temporary, access-restricted PHP information page or the ownCloud administration environment to read the values as the web server sees them. Remove any diagnostic page immediately after verification. A shell command such as php --ini is useful for learning the CLI configuration, but it does not prove what FPM loads.

Record the active configuration path and pool before making changes. If several PHP versions or pools are installed, changing an unused version will not affect ownCloud.

Raise PHP’s file and request limits

In the active PHP-FPM configuration, or in ownCloud’s .user.ini when that file is supported by your PHP-FPM and web-server setup, set both size directives. For example:

upload_max_filesize = 16G
post_max_size = 16G

The values above are an example from ownCloud documentation, not a required recommendation. Substitute a value that matches your policy and capacity. upload_max_filesize limits an individual uploaded file. post_max_size limits the complete HTTP POST body, so it must not be lower than upload_max_filesize; setting it slightly higher can accommodate multipart form overhead.

Use the right configuration location

PHP-FPM does not read these settings from .htaccess. Put them in the FPM configuration that the active pool loads, or use ownCloud’s .user.ini method where your deployment permits per-directory PHP settings. A value in an inactive directory, a different PHP version, or the CLI php.ini will not change the web request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep a record of the old values before editing. If a package update replaces a configuration file, that record makes it easier to restore the intended policy. Avoid setting an unlimited value merely to bypass a test; an unbounded request size can turn an accidental or hostile upload into a storage and availability incident.

Make time and temporary storage large enough

Size limits are only one part of a large transfer. PHP may reject or terminate a request that takes longer than its input or execution budget. For slow connections or very large files, review max_input_time and max_execution_time in the same web-serving PHP context. Choose values that cover the slowest permitted transfer while still protecting the server from abandoned requests.

Check the temporary upload directory

PHP writes incoming data to its temporary upload directory before ownCloud completes the move into the target storage. Confirm the directory used by upload_tmp_dir and the filesystem that contains it:

  • It must exist and be writable by the PHP-FPM worker account.
  • It needs enough free space for the largest in-progress upload and for other uploads that may run concurrently.
  • It should be on a filesystem with capacity and I/O performance appropriate to the workload; a small system partition can fill even when the ownCloud data volume has plenty of space.
  • Monitor inode availability as well as byte capacity when many chunks or temporary files are created.

Also check the final ownCloud storage volume. A transfer can reach the end of the request and still fail when ownCloud cannot commit the completed file because the destination volume or the user’s quota is full. Temporary and destination space are separate checks; satisfying one does not satisfy the other.

Raise the front-end web-server limit

The web server can reject the request before PHP-FPM receives it. Set its request-body limit no lower than the PHP policy, while keeping any organizational maximum lower if that is intentional.

Front end Directive to review Failure it prevents
Nginx client_max_body_size A request body larger than the configured Nginx maximum being rejected before PHP-FPM runs.
Apache LimitRequestBody An Apache request-body ceiling lower than the PHP and ownCloud policy.
Apache with request-time restrictions mod_reqtimeout settings Slow large requests being terminated before they finish.

Nginx checks

Find the server or relevant location block for ownCloud and inspect every inherited client_max_body_size declaration. A value in a more specific location can override a value in the server block. After editing, validate the configuration with your distribution’s Nginx test command, then reload or restart Nginx as appropriate. If the limit is still lower in an included file or a reverse proxy in front of Nginx, that earlier proxy remains the effective bottleneck.

Apache checks

Inspect the virtual host and any directory or location rules for LimitRequestBody. Check whether mod_reqtimeout is enforcing minimum receive rates or request timeouts that are incompatible with slow, large transfers. Validate the Apache configuration before reloading it. If a load balancer or proxy sits in front of Apache, inspect its body-size and timeout policies too.

Understand ownCloud’s chunked-upload options

ownCloud can split a large file into chunks so each HTTP request is smaller. This can make transfers more tolerant of proxies and transient interruptions, but it does not grant unlimited upload capacity. The completed file still consumes destination storage, counts against quota and policy, and may require adequate temporary space.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ownCloud documents OWNCLOUD_DAV_CHUNK_BASE_DIR for the directory used to store upload chunks. Place that directory on a filesystem with enough capacity and appropriate permissions, and include its space in your concurrency calculations.

The environment-variable reference also documents OWNCLOUD_MAX_UPLOAD, which maps to the PHP size settings. When using a containerized deployment, configure the variable in the environment consumed by the ownCloud service rather than editing a host PHP file that the container never reads. Keep the resulting PHP values internally consistent and verify them from the running web context.

Upload method Request behavior Limits that still apply
Direct web upload A single request carries the file, subject to front-end and PHP body limits. Web-server limit, PHP limits, timeouts, temporary space, destination space, quota, and policy.
Chunked client upload The client sends multiple smaller requests and ownCloud stores chunks until assembly. Chunk storage, final destination space, quota, policy, per-request limits, and timeout settings.

Restart services and verify the web-serving values

  1. Save the PHP-FPM configuration and validate its syntax using the service’s documented test option, if available.
  2. Restart or reload the PHP-FPM service that owns the active ownCloud pool. A different versioned service will not apply the change.
  3. Reload or restart Nginx or Apache after changing its request limit. If a reverse proxy or load balancer exists, apply its configuration as well.
  4. Read upload_max_filesize, post_max_size, max_input_time, and max_execution_time through the web-serving PHP context. Do not rely only on php --ini or another shell command.
  5. Test with a file just above the former ceiling, not with your most valuable data. Confirm that the file arrives intact and that temporary files are cleaned up.
  6. Inspect ownCloud, PHP-FPM, and web-server logs during the test. The first component that records the rejection usually identifies the layer that remains too restrictive.

Service names and commands vary by operating system and installation method. In a container, restarting the host’s PHP-FPM service may do nothing; recreate or restart the container that serves the request and verify the environment inside that running container.

Troubleshoot by symptom

The browser reports a request-too-large error immediately

An immediate HTTP 413-style response usually points to a web server or proxy body-size limit. Check Nginx’s client_max_body_size, Apache’s LimitRequestBody, and any gateway in front of them. If the response arrives before PHP-FPM logs a request, PHP settings cannot be the first bottleneck.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PHP reports that the uploaded file exceeds the limit

This indicates that the web-serving PHP context still has a lower value than the file requires. Confirm the active FPM pool, both PHP directives, and whether a pool or .user.ini override is taking precedence. Restart FPM and read the values again through the web request rather than the CLI.

The upload starts, then times out

Review max_input_time, max_execution_time, web-server request timeouts, and Apache’s mod_reqtimeout behavior. Compare the allowed duration with the slowest expected connection. Increasing only the body-size limit does not extend a request’s time budget.

The upload fails near completion with a storage or quota message

Check free space on the ownCloud data volume, the user’s quota, and the filesystem holding the temporary directory or chunk base directory. A large file may need temporary and final space at different stages, and concurrent transfers can consume both faster than a single-file estimate suggests.

The new value appears in the file but ownCloud behaves as before

The edited file may not be loaded by the running pool. Common causes are changing CLI PHP, editing a different PHP version, placing a directive in .htaccess, modifying a host file while ownCloud runs in a container, or forgetting to restart FPM. Verify the effective value from the web-serving process and compare the PHP-FPM socket used by the web server with the service you restarted.

Chunked uploads leave abandoned data

Inspect the directory configured by OWNCLOUD_DAV_CHUNK_BASE_DIR, its permissions, and its free space. Failed or interrupted transfers can leave chunks until cleanup occurs. Ensure the directory is included in capacity monitoring and that the deployment’s ownCloud maintenance and cleanup tasks are operating normally.

Security and operational safeguards

  • Set the smallest maximum that satisfies legitimate files. A huge global limit increases exposure to accidental uploads, denial-of-service attempts, and disk exhaustion.
  • Keep per-user or group quotas aligned with the largest allowed file. A technical ceiling is not a substitute for a storage policy.
  • Monitor PHP-FPM worker utilization, request duration, temporary-directory usage, and destination-volume free space while large uploads are active.
  • Use HTTPS and authenticated ownCloud accounts for transfers. A larger request body does not change authentication or transport requirements.
  • Document every layer changed, including proxy configuration and container environment variables, so a future package upgrade or deployment replacement does not silently restore a lower limit.
  • Test rollback: know which values to restore if large requests exhaust workers or storage.

Configuration checklist

  • Target file size selected from storage and policy requirements.
  • Correct PHP-FPM version, pool, and configuration path identified.
  • upload_max_filesize set to the intended per-file ceiling.
  • post_max_size set no lower than upload_max_filesize.
  • max_input_time and max_execution_time reviewed for the slowest permitted transfer.
  • upload_tmp_dir exists, is writable, and has capacity for concurrent uploads.
  • Nginx client_max_body_size or Apache LimitRequestBody is not the lower bottleneck.
  • Apache mod_reqtimeout and any reverse-proxy timeout have been considered.
  • Chunk storage, if used, is configured through OWNCLOUD_DAV_CHUNK_BASE_DIR with adequate space.
  • Container deployments use the running service’s environment, including OWNCLOUD_MAX_UPLOAD where applicable.
  • PHP-FPM and the HTTP server have been reloaded or restarted.
  • Effective values have been verified through the web-serving PHP context.
  • A controlled test file just above the previous limit succeeds and logs remain clean.

What the official documentation says

ownCloud’s Configuration Notes and Tips state: “If you want to increase the maximum upload size, you will also have to modify your php-fpm configuration and increase the upload_max_filesize and post_max_size values.” Its Big File Upload Configuration notes that the affected PHP keys “need to be reconfigured.” Those statements describe the central change, while the surrounding web-server, storage, timeout, and verification checks determine whether that change works in a real deployment.

The practical rule is simple: raise the PHP-FPM values together, remove any lower front-end limit, provide enough temporary and destination capacity, allow enough time for the transfer, and verify the running web configuration after restarting services. If the test still fails, the log from the first rejecting layer tells you which remaining ceiling to fix.
