To install a Minecraft mod saved as a .jar, put the mod file in the mods folder for the right Minecraft installation, then launch the game with the mod loader the mod requires. The mod must match your Minecraft version and loader; on Fabric, check whether it also requires Fabric API.
Before installing: check the mod’s requirements
These steps apply to Minecraft: Java Edition. On the mod’s download or project page, confirm the Minecraft version it supports, the required loader (such as Fabric or Forge), and any dependencies. A mod made for one loader is not automatically compatible with another, and a mod for a different game version may not work.
Download mods only from sources you trust, as the Fabric Documentation’s Installing Mods guide advises. Make sure you have the mod itself—not a loader installer or another setup file.
Install the loader and place the mod file
- Install the required loader. Follow the loader’s official installation instructions. Its installer should create a launcher profile; use Fabric for a Fabric mod or the matching Forge profile for a Forge mod. The CurseForge manual installation guide also walks through choosing a matching Forge profile.
- Open the correct installation’s
modsfolder. For the official Minecraft Launcher’s default game directory, the Fabric guide lists these paths:- Windows:
%appdata%.minecraftmods - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/mods - Linux:
~/.minecraft/mods
If the folder does not exist, create one named
mods. If you use a custom game directory or a third-party launcher, use that installation or instance’s mod folder instead; consult the launcher’s documentation if you are unsure. - Windows:
- Move the mod’s
.jarintomods. Keep it as a.jarfile; do not put the loader installer there instead. - Add any required dependencies. Follow the mod’s own requirements. The Fabric guide says most Fabric mods require Fabric API; it identifies Modrinth and CurseForge as places to obtain it.
- Start the matching loader profile. In Minecraft Launcher, select the installed Fabric or Forge profile that matches the mod, then press Play. Launching the ordinary unmodded profile will not load the mod through that loader.
If the mod does not load
Check these items first, in order:

- The Minecraft version, mod version, and loader match the mod’s stated requirements.
- You installed every dependency the mod lists, including Fabric API if the Fabric mod requires it.
- The
.jaris in themodsfolder for the same game directory or launcher instance you started. - You launched the matching loader profile rather than the unmodded profile.
The default folder paths above are for the standard Minecraft directory, so a custom directory or separate launcher instance can make a correctly installed mod appear to be missing. If those checks do not resolve the problem, Fabric recommends its troubleshooting pages or player-support channel.
