To run a Minecraft Snapshot server, download the server jar for the exact Snapshot you want to test, place it in a new folder, launch it with a compatible Java runtime, accept the EULA, configure server.properties, and have every player install that same Snapshot in the Minecraft Launcher. Keep the test world separate from release worlds and back it up first: Mojang warns that testing versions can corrupt worlds.

This guide covers a single-computer test server, LAN play, and Internet access for remote friends. It applies to Minecraft: Java Edition Snapshots, not Bedrock Edition.

A Snapshot is a prerelease build of Minecraft: Java Edition. It is intended for testing upcoming features, so it can change between releases, contain bugs, or fail to load a world that worked in another version. A Snapshot server is simply the dedicated Java server program built for that particular Snapshot; it is not interchangeable with a normal release server jar.
The client and server must identify the same version. Mojang’s multiplayer guidance states that the Minecraft version you play must be the same version the server runs. A player on a release such as 1.21.x cannot normally join a server running a 26.2 Snapshot, and a player on a different Snapshot cannot be treated as compatible just because both are labeled “Snapshot.”

Because the software is experimental, use a disposable or copied world. Mojang’s warning is explicit: “Testing versions can corrupt your world, so please backup and/or run them in a different folder from your main worlds.”
Before you download anything
Confirm the edition and purpose
- You need Minecraft: Java Edition and the Java Minecraft Launcher.
- Snapshots are for testing. Use a normal release for a long-running survival world, a public community server, or a world whose data you cannot replace.
- Decide whether you need a private local test, LAN play, or Internet access. The last option adds firewall and router work.
Prepare a safe test plan
- Choose a new world, or make a complete copy of an existing world while the normal server is stopped.
- Keep the Snapshot directory separate from the directory used by your release server.
- Record the Snapshot identifier in the folder name and in your notes so you can match clients and backups later.
- Do not let an experimental jar write to the only copy of a release world.
Download the exact Snapshot server jar
Find the official Snapshot announcement
Open the official Minecraft article for the Snapshot you intend to test. Snapshot announcements include two relevant instructions: enable Snapshots in the Launcher’s Installations tab, and download the “Minecraft server jar.” A current example, Minecraft 26.2 Snapshot 7, follows this same workflow.

Preserve the version identifier in the downloaded filename. If your browser renames the file, compare it with the name shown on the official download link before proceeding.
Why the filename matters
The launch command must contain the jar’s exact filename. A command referring to minecraft_server.26.2.jar will fail if the downloaded file is named for Snapshot 7 or has a different extension. Keeping the original name also makes it easier to identify which version created a world or backup.
Create an isolated server folder
Make a folder for this one Snapshot
Create a directory such as Minecraft-Snapshot-26.2-Snapshot-7. Put the downloaded jar directly inside it. Do not place it beside your release server files if you might accidentally launch the wrong jar or point both servers at the same world.
The official Java server guidance uses a dedicated server folder before the jar is run. You can create the folder anywhere you have permission to write: for example, a folder under your home directory or a dedicated game-server location. The location does not change the Minecraft rules; what matters is that the jar, eula.txt, server.properties, logs, and world directories remain together.

Copy a world only after stopping its original server
If you are testing an existing world, stop the release server cleanly first, then copy the entire world directory into the Snapshot server folder. Never copy files while the original server is still writing them. For a new test, let the Snapshot create a fresh world instead.
Keep the untouched backup outside the Snapshot folder. If the test damages the copy, stop the server and restore the backup rather than continuing to use the damaged data.
Install and verify Java
The dedicated server is a Java program. Install a Java runtime compatible with the selected Minecraft version and make sure the java command is available in your terminal or command prompt. The required Java level can vary between Minecraft versions, so use the requirement stated for your Snapshot rather than copying a requirement from an older release.
Open a terminal in the new server folder and run:
java -versionA version string should be printed. If the command is not found, install Java or correct your operating system’s PATH before trying to launch Minecraft. If the command prints a runtime that the Snapshot does not support, install a compatible runtime and verify again. Running the command from the server folder is useful because it also confirms that your terminal is pointed at the intended directory.

Launch the jar for the first time
Graphical launch
Use the exact filename shown in your folder:
java -jar minecraft_server.<snapshot-version>.jarReplace <snapshot-version> with the real name; angle brackets here indicate a value to substitute, not characters to type. Mojang’s download guidance allows the jar to start with its graphical interface when you omit nogui.
Headless launch
For a machine where you do not need the graphical interface, append nogui:

java -jar <exact-jar-name>.jar noguiThe server still runs the same game logic. The difference is that management happens in the terminal window rather than a graphical panel. Leave that terminal open while the server is running, and use the server’s normal stop command before closing it so world data can be saved.
What the first run creates
On the initial launch, the server normally creates files including eula.txt, server.properties, and world data, then stops because the EULA has not been accepted. If you see an EULA message, that is expected on a first run; do not repeatedly launch the jar without completing the next step.

- Open
eula.txtin the same folder as the server jar. - Read the Minecraft End User License Agreement.
- If you agree, change the setting from
eula=falsetoeula=true. Keep the spelling and lowercase value exactly as shown. - Save the file without moving it to another directory.
- Run the identical Java command again, including
noguiif you used it before.
If the server still says the EULA has not been accepted, check that you edited the generated eula.txt beside this jar, that the file was saved, and that the line is exactly eula=true. A second copy of the file elsewhere does not affect the server you launched.
Configure server.properties before inviting players
Stop the server before editing configuration, then open server.properties with a plain-text editor. The file is generated in the server folder after the first launch. Change only the settings you understand, save the file, and restart the server when the change requires it.
Settings most Snapshot tests need

The port in the file and the port players use must agree. If you change it from the default, use the new value in local connection details, firewall rules, and router forwarding.
Enable the same Snapshot in every Minecraft Launcher
- Open the Minecraft Launcher.
- Go to Installations and enable the option that shows Snapshots.
- Create a new installation or edit an existing one.
- Select the exact Snapshot identifier used by the server jar.
- Save the installation and launch that profile once so the client downloads its matching files.
Repeat this for every player. A client on a normal release, an older Snapshot, or a newer Snapshot is not the exact version required by the server. Players who normally use Snapshots may need to switch back to a release installation when joining ordinary servers.

Connect from the host computer
On the same computer that runs the server, use localhost in Multiplayer. This avoids guessing the machine’s network address.
Connect over a home network
For another device on the same LAN, use the host computer’s local address and the configured port. The server host and the joining device must be on the same network, and the host firewall must allow the Java server to accept that connection.
Allow remote friends to connect
Players outside your home network need more than the correct Snapshot. Configure the host operating system’s firewall to allow the server process or port, then forward the server port from your router to the computer running the jar. Mojang’s setup guidance identifies 25565 as the usual Java port when it has not been changed.

- Give the server computer a stable local address or a router reservation so forwarding does not point to the wrong device later.
- Create a router port-forwarding rule for the same port listed in
server.properties, targeting that local address. - Allow the same port through the host firewall.
- Give friends the public address and port in the form
public-IP:25565when the default is used, or replace25565with your custom port. - Test from outside your home network if possible. A device on the same LAN may not be able to test the public address correctly.
Do not post your public address broadly. Share it only with the people who need access, and remove the forwarding rule when the temporary test is over. If your Internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT or blocks inbound connections, ordinary port forwarding may not work; in that case the router rule is not enough and you need a hosting arrangement that supports inbound connections.

Troubleshoot the most common failures
“Unable to access jarfile”
The terminal is usually in the wrong directory, or the command does not match the filename. List the files in the server folder, copy the jar name exactly, and run the command from that folder. Check for an extra .jar, a renamed download, or spaces that were omitted.
Java is missing or reports an error
Run java -version again. If the command is unavailable, install Java and make it available on the command line. If Java starts but the server reports an unsupported class or runtime, use the Java level required by that Snapshot. Do not assume the runtime used by an older Minecraft release is valid for a newer Snapshot.

The EULA warning returns every time
Verify that you changed the eula.txt generated beside the jar you are launching. Confirm the saved value is exactly eula=true, then rerun the same command. Editing a file in a different Snapshot folder has no effect.

- Compare the client installation name and server Snapshot identifier character by character.
- Confirm the server finished starting and is still running in its terminal or window.
- Check that the address and port match
server.properties. - For LAN play, use the host’s local address; for remote play, use the public address and forwarded port.
- Check the host firewall before changing unrelated settings.
Friends cannot connect from outside the network
Recheck the public address, router destination address, forwarded port, firewall rule, and the port in server.properties. Make sure the server computer’s local address has not changed. If local players can join but remote players cannot, the Snapshot itself is less likely to be the cause than routing, firewall, or carrier-grade NAT.
The world behaves strangely or will not load
Stop the test server immediately. Restore the untouched backup into a clean Snapshot folder and keep the damaged copy for diagnosis only. Do not open the same world with multiple Snapshot versions or with your release server while you are trying to recover it.
Move between Snapshot versions safely
Treat each Snapshot as a separate experiment. Stop the server, archive the complete folder, and record the jar version before changing versions. Create a new folder for the next Snapshot rather than replacing the old jar in place. If you need to compare behavior, copy the original test world again so each version starts from the same backup.
When you return to a normal release, launch the release server from its own directory and use its own world copy. Do not rely on a Snapshot-modified world as the only release-world backup.
