The safest way to add a second WordPress blog is usually a separate installation in its own directory, with its own database and configuration. Use WordPress Multisite instead when you deliberately want one shared WordPress core, centralized administration, and network-wide management. Choose the URL first—an address such as example.com/blog2 or blog2.example.com—then verify DNS, TLS, document roots, rewrites, backups, and database access before changing the live site.

What a second WordPress blog actually requires
A second blog is not created by copying the first site’s front-end folder and changing its name. Each standalone WordPress installation needs its own configuration and a database connection. The second copy must live in a different directory, such as /blog2, or in a directory assigned to a subdomain. Its wp-config.php must identify the correct database credentials and table prefix.

In that model, the sites share one WordPress core and are managed from a central Network Admin area. The sites retain separate content tables and upload locations, but updates and some configuration decisions are shared. Converting an established site into a network changes the existing installation, so it is a more consequential choice than adding an independent copy.

| Decision area | Separate standalone installation | WordPress Multisite |
|---|---|---|
| Core files | Each blog has its own WordPress files and update schedule. | All sites share one WordPress installation core. |
| Database | Use a separate database whenever possible. A shared database is safe only with a unique table prefix for the second site. | Sites use separate content tables inside the network’s database structure. |
| Administration | Each site has an independent dashboard, settings, plugins, themes, and users. | A network administrator manages sites centrally; individual site administrators have narrower controls. |
| Plugin and theme control | Install and update components independently for each blog. | Plugins and themes must work in a network context, and some can be enabled or restricted at network level. |
| Isolation | A failure or update on one installation is less likely to alter the other, provided hosting and backups are separate. | Shared core files create a larger blast radius: a core or network-level change can affect every site. |
| URL choices | Use a subdirectory or map a separate directory to a subdomain. | Choose a subdirectory network or a domain-based network, then configure the required DNS and rewrites. |
| Backup and restore | Back up and restore the second files and database independently. | Backups must account for the network’s shared core and the site-specific tables and uploads. |
| Best fit | Two blogs need different plugins, themes, update timing, owners, or operational boundaries. | Several related sites benefit from one core, one technical team, and centralized administration. |
Choose a standalone installation when independence matters
Install a second standalone copy if the new blog needs its own plugin and theme set, a separate update schedule, a different administrator, or a database that can be restored without touching the original. This is also the clearer design when the blogs may eventually move to different servers or owners.
The second copy can still live in the same hosting account. The important boundaries are a separate directory and a correctly configured database connection. If your host permits only one database, assign a table prefix that the first installation does not use. A prefix such as wp2_ is an example; the exact value is your choice, and it must be applied consistently to the second installation’s configuration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose Multisite when shared management is the priority
Multisite is appropriate when the blogs are part of one managed network and should share core files and central administration. WordPress describes a network as a collection of sites that share the same installation core files. Each site still has its own content tables and upload location, but the network’s architecture means you must evaluate every required plugin and theme for network compatibility.
Do not enable Multisite merely to avoid creating another database. Network creation updates the existing installation and can require permalink changes. A path-based network can also conflict with existing directories or links. Take a complete backup and confirm that your current URL structure can accommodate the network before proceeding.

| URL model | Example | What must be prepared | Main concern |
|---|---|---|---|
| Subdirectory | https://example.com/blog2 |
A directory or network path under the existing document root, plus compatible rewrite and permalink rules. | An existing site may already use the path, or a Multisite conversion may require a modified permalink structure. |
| Subdomain | https://blog2.example.com |
DNS for the subdomain, server routing or a mapped document root, TLS certificate coverage, and rewrite rules. | DNS and web-server configuration must send the hostname to the correct WordPress files. |
For Multisite, WordPress calls these a subdirectory network and a domain-based network. Domain mapping is built into WordPress 4.5 and later, but the host still has to route the domain correctly. If the server runs Nginx, WordPress cannot generate the Nginx configuration for you; an administrator must write or adapt the rewrite rules. WordPress can generate rules for Apache and IIS during network setup.

Complete these checks before touching the live installation:
- Confirm that the hosting account permits another directory and, preferably, another database and database user.
- If a second database is unavailable, confirm that the existing database user can create tables and that the new installation will use a unique
$table_prefix. - Check the host’s current WordPress PHP and MySQL compatibility requirements rather than relying on an old hosting plan description.
- For a subdomain, create or prepare the DNS record and verify that the TLS certificate covers the hostname.
- Identify the document root or server route that will serve the new directory.
- Record how rewrites are managed on the server. Apache and IIS can receive rules generated by WordPress; Nginx requires administrator-supplied configuration.
- Ensure that your backup process can restore the existing files, database,
wp-config.php, and.htaccessfile.
Back up before installing a standalone copy and again before enabling Multisite. A usable backup is one you can restore, not merely an archive whose contents have never been checked. Keep the pre-change backup until the new blog has passed front-end, administration, media, permalink, email, SSL, caching, and plugin tests.
Install a second standalone WordPress blog
This procedure keeps the original site unchanged except for any server or DNS routing you intentionally add.
- Create the destination. Make a new directory such as
/blog2, or create the directory that your subdomain will use as its document root. Do not place the second files inside the first installation’s existingwp-contentdirectory. - Prepare the database. Create a new database and database user when the host allows it. Note the database name, username, password, and host value exactly as supplied by the host. If you must share the original database, reserve a table prefix that no other installation uses.
- Upload WordPress. Put the WordPress files in the new directory. Preserve the normal file structure so that the new installation’s
wp-admin,wp-includes, andwp-contentdirectories are at the location the URL serves. - Configure
wp-config.php. In the new configuration file, setDB_NAME,DB_USER,DB_PASSWORD, andDB_HOSTto the second installation’s database details. If the database is shared, set a unique$table_prefix. Do not overwrite the original site’s configuration file. - Open the installation URL. Visit the subdirectory URL or subdomain over HTTPS. WordPress should display its installer. If you see the original blog, a directory listing, or a server error, stop and correct document-root or rewrite routing before proceeding.
- Complete the installer. Supply the new site title, administrator account, password, and email address. Use an administrator identity appropriate for this blog; do not assume the first site’s administrator should automatically control the second one.
- Set the URL and permalinks. In the new dashboard, confirm the WordPress address and site address, then choose the intended permalink structure. Save the permalink settings so WordPress writes the rules required for the new location.
- Apply the site’s operational settings. Configure HTTPS behavior, timezone, email delivery, media settings, caching, and any privacy or visibility controls before publishing content.
A shared database is not a shortcut to a shared site. The second configuration must use its own table prefix, and both installations must continue pointing to the same database host and credentials that actually contain their tables. If the prefix is duplicated, one installer can read or alter the other site’s tables.

Create a WordPress Multisite network
Use this route only after deciding that a shared core and network administration are desirable.
- Back up the existing installation. Save the files, database,
wp-config.php, and.htaccess. Keep the backup outside the web-accessible document root. - Check the current site for conflicts. Review existing directory names, permalink structures, plugins, themes, custom rewrite rules, and any links that could collide with the second site’s path or hostname.
- Enable the network feature. Add the network-enabling setting to the existing WordPress configuration as directed by the Network Setup screen. Use the exact setting and placement shown by your installation rather than copying an old example.
- Open Network Setup. In the dashboard, use the network setup screen to choose a subdirectory network or a domain-based network. The available choice can depend on the age and URL structure of the existing installation.
- Apply the generated configuration. WordPress displays the required additions for
wp-config.phpand the rewrite directives. Copy them exactly into the indicated files, preserving a backup of each file first. - Sign in again. Network activation changes the dashboard experience. Use the new Network Admin area to manage sites, users, themes, and plugins according to the network’s permissions.
- Create the second site. In Network Admin, add the site’s address, title, and administrator email. For a subdirectory network, choose the path; for a domain-based network, ensure the hostname already resolves to the server.
- Configure the site. Open the new site’s dashboard, set its site address and permalinks, select a compatible theme, and activate only plugins that have been verified in the network context.
Network creation can alter the existing installation’s rewrite and permalink behavior. If existing links stop resolving, restore the pre-network backup or correct the rules before adding content. Switching an established network between subdomains and subdirectories is an advanced operation involving database, configuration, and server changes; treat it as a migration rather than a setting you can safely toggle.
Configure DNS, TLS, and web-server routing
Subdirectory routing
For a standalone subdirectory, the web server must serve the new files below the requested path while the original site continues to answer requests at the root. For a subdirectory Multisite network, the network’s rewrite rules must pass requests for each site to the shared WordPress front controller. Check for an existing folder or rewrite rule that already claims the path.
Subdomain routing
Create the DNS record for the chosen hostname and point it to the same server or routing service that will serve the files. Then assign the hostname to the second installation’s document root or to the Multisite network. Install or update the TLS certificate so HTTPS covers the subdomain. A DNS record without a matching server route commonly produces the wrong site, a default virtual host, or a certificate warning.

Apache and IIS can receive rewrite directives generated during WordPress network setup. Nginx administrators must write or adapt the equivalent configuration themselves. Do not paste Apache directives into an Nginx configuration. After changing rules, test both the front page and a nested post URL, then test /wp-admin and a media file.

Move an existing second blog into the new location
If the blog already exists elsewhere, create the destination architecture first and migrate into it rather than trying to merge live files blindly.
- Export the source content. Use WordPress’s export feature to create a WXR file containing the posts, pages, and other content you intend to move.
- Create the destination site. Finish the standalone installation or create the Multisite site before importing anything.
- Import the WXR file. Run the importer from the destination dashboard and map content to the appropriate users. Confirm that the imported posts, pages, taxonomies, and dates appear as expected.
- Copy compatible themes and plugins. Install the components the destination actually needs. In a network, verify each plugin’s network behavior and activation requirements before enabling it.
- Check media and links. Open representative posts and pages, inspect image displays, and test links that point to the old hostname or path. Correct references before launch.
- Test privately. Use a maintenance or restricted-visibility approach while checking URLs, logins, forms, email, and permissions. Announce the new address only after those checks pass.
Test the second blog before publishing it
Use a checklist that covers both sites. A page loading successfully is not enough; a wrong rewrite or shared table can remain hidden until an administrator saves a setting.
- Front end: Open the home page, a category or archive, a single post, a page, a search result, and a 404 URL.
- Administration: Sign in to the new
/wp-admin, save a setting, create a draft, publish it, and confirm that the original dashboard is unaffected. - Permalinks: Save the permalink settings and test nested URLs after any rewrite change.
- Media: Upload an image, insert it into a post, view the attachment URL, and confirm that uploads go to the intended site location.
- SSL: Test HTTP-to-HTTPS behavior, mixed-content warnings, the certificate hostname, and login redirects.
- Email: Trigger password-reset or comment notification mail and verify delivery, sender address, and links.
- Caching: Purge page and object caches, then confirm that content from one blog is not served on the other blog’s URL.
- Plugins and themes: Test contact forms, editors, security controls, analytics, and any plugin that writes files or modifies rewrites. In Multisite, repeat the check for network-enabled components.
- Backups: Run a backup of the new configuration and confirm that the restore scope is understood—individual site for a standalone install, or the relevant site data plus shared core for a network.
Troubleshoot common failures
The new URL shows the original blog
Check the document root, virtual-host or subdomain mapping, and rewrite rules. Confirm that the request is reaching the second directory and that its wp-config.php points to the intended database. Clear server and page caches only after routing is correct; cache purges cannot fix a wrong document root.
WordPress reports a database connection error
Recheck DB_NAME, DB_USER, DB_PASSWORD, and DB_HOST against the host’s current values. Verify that the database user has access to the selected database. If the database is shared, confirm that the second installation’s table prefix is unique and that its tables were created under that prefix.
Every post returns a 404 after installation
Save the new site’s permalink settings, then inspect the server’s rewrite configuration. On a network, apply the directives shown by the Network Setup screen. On Nginx, have the administrator adapt the configuration manually; WordPress does not generate Nginx rules.

The subdomain does not resolve or shows a certificate warning
Verify the DNS record, allow for DNS propagation, confirm that the hostname is attached to the correct server route, and issue a certificate that includes the subdomain. The WordPress site address must use the same hostname and HTTPS scheme that the server is serving.
Existing links broke after enabling Multisite
Stop adding sites and compare the current permalink and rewrite rules with the pre-network backup. A subdirectory network can require a modified permalink structure and can conflict with an existing path. Restore the backup if necessary, then plan the network conversion with a staging copy or experienced administrator.

A plugin works alone but fails in Multisite
Check whether the plugin supports network activation, per-site activation, and separate upload or database behavior. Disable it at the network or site level, test the remaining installation, and consult the plugin’s documented network requirements before re-enabling it.
Operate and back up two blogs after launch
Document which files, database, URL, administrator accounts, and backup job belong to each blog. For standalone installations, schedule independent updates and restore tests so that a change on one site does not force a simultaneous change on the other. For Multisite, test core, theme, and plugin updates against every site because the shared core can affect the entire network.
Keep the original pre-install backup until both blogs have accumulated verified backups of their own. When changing a subdomain, path, or network structure, make a new backup first and record the old DNS, rewrite, and configuration values so that rollback is possible.
Decision guide
- Choose a standalone subdirectory when the second blog needs independent plugins, themes, updates, administrators, or database recovery.
- Choose a standalone subdomain when the blog should remain independent but deserves a distinct hostname and server route.
- Choose a Multisite subdirectory network when related sites can share one core and the existing URL structure has no path conflicts.
- Choose a Multisite domain-based network when centralized management is wanted but each site needs its own hostname; prepare DNS, TLS, and routing first.
- Pause and get specialist help before converting a busy production site, changing an established network’s URL model, or editing Nginx rules without a tested rollback.
The practical default for two genuinely independent blogs is a separate installation in a new directory with a separate database. Multisite is the better tool when shared core files and Network Admin are intentional requirements, not merely a way to avoid creating another database.
