Install American Truck Simulator (ATS) mods either through Steam Workshop or by placing a downloaded package in the game’s user-data mod folder. In both cases, open Mod Manager for the profile you plan to play, enable the mod, and confirm the changes before loading that profile.
Choose Workshop or manual installation

Compatibility depends on the individual mod and your game version, so neither method guarantees that a particular item will work.
Install a mod from Steam Workshop
- Open the American Truck Simulator Steam Workshop and find the mod.
- Select Subscribe and let Steam download the item.
- Launch ATS and select the profile you want to use.
- Open Mod Manager. If the mod is not active, select it and confirm the changes before loading the profile. Mods are managed per profile, so check the profile you intend to play. SCS Software forum
Install a mod manually on Windows
For the default Windows setup described in an SCS Software forum reply, put the downloaded .scs file or compatible .zip package in DocumentsAmerican Truck Simulatormod. Create the mod folder if it does not exist. This path is for that Windows setup; it should not be assumed to be the correct location on macOS or Linux. SCS Software forum
- Read the mod download page for its required file structure and any extra installation instructions.
- Place the supported package in the ATS user-data
modfolder. SCS describes mod packages as ZIP archives or ordinary directories; a package can also declare game-version compatibility and DLC dependencies. SCS Software Modding Wiki - If the download is a
.raror another archive format the game does not support as a package, extract it first as instructed by the mod author. Do not leave an unsupported archive in the folder and expect it to load. SCS Software forum - Launch ATS, select the intended profile, and open Mod Manager.
- Select the mod and confirm the changes before loading the profile.
Check compatibility before enabling mods
- Game version: Check the mod’s stated supported versions against your ATS version. A mod can declare compatibility restrictions, and Mod Manager may make it unavailable outside the listed versions. SCS Software Modding Wiki
- Required DLC: Check whether the mod depends on map or other DLC you do not own. A missing required DLC can prevent activation. SCS Software Modding Wiki
- Profile: Enable the mod on the profile you will actually play; selecting it in another profile does not activate it for this one. SCS Software forum
- Load order: Follow the mod author’s instructions. Some mods require a particular order, and general forum advice about replacement mods is not universal. SCS Software forum
Fix a mod that does not appear or causes problems
The mod is missing from Mod Manager
- For manual installation, confirm it is in the ATS user-data

SCS Software forum - Check that the file is in a supported form: a compatible ZIP, an SCS package, or a package directory. Extract unsupported archive types as the download instructions require. - Make sure Mod Manager is open for the profile you intend to use. For Workshop items, verify Steam has downloaded the subscription; for either method, select and activate the mod in Mod Manager if needed.
- Check the mod’s game-version and DLC requirements. A version restriction or missing dependency can make a mod unavailable. SCS Software Modding Wiki
The game behaves badly after enabling a mod
Disable the mod and check its compatibility notes and load-order instructions. To reduce risk when trying unfamiliar combinations, SCS forum users advise testing one mod or a small group on a new profile before adding them to a main profile; this is a precaution, not a guarantee against save problems. Keep mods current
Workshop subscriptions update when an author uploads a new version. Manual packages do not: download and install the new release yourself, following its instructions. SCS describes the distinction directly: “Standard mods require taking care of their distribution, and users need to manually update them upon new releases.” SCS Software Modding Wiki
