How to Install and Configure Game Boy Emulators on Steam Deck

By VGSources Team 12 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The easiest reliable setup is EmuDeck in Steam Deck Desktop Mode. Choose internal storage or a microSD card for its Emulation folder, let it install and configure the emulators, copy your own Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance backups into the matching gb, gbc, and gba directories, then use Steam ROM Manager to create shortcuts for Steam Game Mode. RetroDECK provides a bundled alternative with a different folder layout. Neither package supplies ROMs or BIOS files.

What you need before installing

Have the following ready before opening an installer:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • A Steam Deck with enough free storage for the emulator software and your game backups.
  • A way to move files to the Deck, such as a microSD card, USB drive, network share, or Desktop Mode file transfer.
  • Legally obtained ROM backups made from cartridges or games you own. EmuDeck states that it does not provide ROMs or BIOS files, and downloading games you do not own is not legal.
  • A decision about where the Emulation folder should live: the internal SSD or a microSD card.
  • An optional keyboard and mouse. The setup works with the Deck’s controls, but file management and Steam ROM Manager are easier with a keyboard and mouse.

Emulation software is legal to install, but the copyright status of each ROM and BIOS file depends on how you obtained it and on the law where you live. The safest workflow is to dump your own cartridges and transfer those backups to the Deck. Do not download ROM or BIOS archives from unofficial sites.

Choose between EmuDeck and RetroDECK

Both projects provide an all-in-one route to running Game Boy software on Steam Deck, but they make different trade-offs. EmuDeck is an installation script and configuration layer that can manage several standalone emulators and parsers. RetroDECK is a bundled package with its own directory structure and configurator.

  • Built to endure with temperature resistance, waterproofing, x-ray protection, and more
Decision point EmuDeck RetroDECK
Installation scope Installs and configures a collection of emulators, with separate management controls. Uses a single bundled package and its configurator.
Game Boy options Supports standalone mGBA and RetroArch-based choices, depending on the parser and emulator you enable. Uses the emulators and cores included in its package.
Folder convention Uses an Emulation folder, with Game Boy ROMs in roms/gb, roms/gbc, and roms/gba; BIOS files go in Emulation/bios. Uses its own ~/retrodeck/ structure. Follow the folders shown by the RetroDECK configurator rather than copying the EmuDeck paths.
Steam integration Steam ROM Manager creates individual non-Steam shortcuts, and EmulationStation-DE is another documented launcher option. Add RetroDECK itself to Steam as a non-Steam game, then use its configurator and launcher workflow.
Updates and resets Provides Manage Emulators controls and reset actions for stale Steam ROM Manager configurations. Uses the RetroDECK configurator for package settings and maintenance.
Best fit People who want granular parser selection, standalone mGBA, or a mixed emulator setup. People who prefer one integrated package and are happy to use its directory and configurator.

If you are unsure, start with EmuDeck. Its documented Game Boy paths make it straightforward to diagnose a missing game, and you can still choose RetroArch cores or standalone mGBA later.

Install EmuDeck in Desktop Mode

1. Switch to Desktop Mode

  1. Press the Steam button, open Power, and choose Switch to Desktop.
  2. Wait for the KDE Plasma desktop to load. Connect a keyboard and mouse if available.
  3. Open a browser and obtain the current EmuDeck installer from its official distribution page. Run the downloaded installer and follow its prompts.

EmuDeck describes itself as “an installation script that helps you get started with emulation.” It performs the directory setup and configures supported emulators; it does not download copyrighted games for you.

2. Select the Emulation-folder location

The installer asks whether the Emulation folder belongs on the internal SSD or a microSD card. Choose the device that matches how you plan to store ROMs:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Internal SSD: faster access and no removable-media dependency, but the Deck’s internal space is limited.
  • microSD card: convenient for a large library and easy to move between devices, but the card must be inserted and mounted whenever you launch a game.

On an SD-card installation, EmuDeck documentation uses paths such as /run/media/mmcblk0p1/Emulation/roms/... The exact mount point can differ if the card is reformatted or mounted under a different device name, so use Dolphin’s location shown for your card rather than typing a guessed path.

3. Let EmuDeck complete its setup

  1. Accept the default emulator installation choices unless you already know which components you want to omit.
  2. Allow the script to create the Emulation directory tree and configure Steam integration components.
  3. When the installation finishes, open EmuDeck’s main interface and note the location of the Emulation folder you selected.

You can change individual emulator choices later. Do not move or rename the top-level Emulation folder after setup without updating the relevant paths; parsers and shortcuts depend on that location.

Install RetroDECK instead

Choose RetroDECK if you prefer a single package with a dedicated configurator. Install it from Desktop Mode using its current official distribution method, launch the configurator, and accept or change its storage location. RetroDECK uses ~/retrodeck/ and related subfolders rather than EmuDeck’s Emulation/roms layout.

Lexar 2TB Play Blue Micro SD Card, 160MB/s Read, 4K, V30, UHS-I, A2
  • Compatible with Nintendo-Switch 1 (NOT compatible with Nintendo-Switch 2), smartphones, and tablets
  • Boost your gaming experience with up to 160MB/s read for fast load times
  • A2-rated app performance lets you quickly access and enjoy games and apps without lag for an enhanced gaming experience and a competitive edge
  • Store more of your favorite games and other content with capacities up to 2TB
  • Built to endure with temperature resistance, waterproofing, x-ray protection, and more
  1. Switch to Desktop Mode.
  2. Install RetroDECK and open its configurator.
  3. Choose the storage device and let RetroDECK create its directories.
  4. Copy your legally obtained Game Boy backups into the system-specific folders displayed by the configurator.
  5. Add RetroDECK to Steam as a non-Steam game if the installer has not already done so.

Do not mix the two layouts. A ROM placed in an EmuDeck folder will not automatically appear in RetroDECK’s library, and the reverse is also true.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Put GB, GBC, and GBA ROMs in the right folders

For an EmuDeck installation, open Dolphin and navigate to the Emulation folder you selected. Create or use these directories:

System EmuDeck ROM directory Typical content
Game Boy Emulation/roms/gb Game Boy cartridge backups
Game Boy Color Emulation/roms/gbc Game Boy Color cartridge backups
Game Boy Advance Emulation/roms/gba Game Boy Advance cartridge backups

Transfer files safely

  1. In Dolphin, open the destination folder for the system you are transferring.
  2. Copy the backup files from your USB drive, network share, or other source into that folder.
  3. Wait for the copy to finish before ejecting the source device.
  4. Keep the original backup in a separate location. A microSD card can fail or be reformatted, so it should not be your only copy.

Keep file names simple and avoid deeply nested folders while you are testing. Once the parser recognizes the games, you can organize subfolders if the selected parser supports them. If a title does not appear, first verify that its system folder matches the parser you intend to use.

BIOS files: when they matter and where they go

Many Game Boy titles run without a BIOS file, but the requirement depends on the emulator or core and on the behavior you want. Follow the selected emulator’s documented requirements rather than copying random BIOS files into multiple locations.

For EmuDeck’s RetroArch setup, treat Emulation/bios as RetroArch’s System directory. The folder is named bios in the EmuDeck layout even though RetroArch’s own terminology calls the equivalent location System. Place only legally obtained BIOS files there, using the file names and capitalization required by the core.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • If a core starts games normally, do not add unnecessary BIOS files just to make the folder look complete.
  • If a core reports a missing BIOS, check that the file is in Emulation/bios, that its name is exact, and that the parser is launching the core you configured.
  • Do not assume a BIOS for one system or region works for another. The emulator’s requirement is authoritative.

Standalone mGBA and RetroArch cores can have different BIOS behavior. Test one game after installation before copying a large library, so an error is easy to associate with the emulator and core you selected.

Choose a Game Boy emulator or RetroArch core

Standalone mGBA

EmuDeck’s mGBA integration supports Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance parsers. It is the direct choice when you want a dedicated emulator rather than a multi-system frontend. Use EmuDeck’s Manage Emulators page to install or reinstall mGBA if it was skipped during the initial setup.

mGBA’s executable, configuration, save, and save-state locations are managed by the EmuDeck installation. Avoid moving those files manually; use the emulator’s menus or EmuDeck’s management controls so shortcuts continue to point to the correct executable.

RetroArch

RetroArch is available as a Flatpak option and runs systems through cores. Gambatte and mGBA are examples of cores that cover Game Boy systems. This route is useful if you want a common interface, shared input mapping, and a consistent save-state workflow across several consoles.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

RetroArch separates ordinary in-game saves, save states, and configuration data. EmuDeck’s RetroArch documentation maps those locations into its Emulation directory. Keep those folders intact when moving a library; copying only ROMs will not necessarily move your progress.

How to decide

  • Choose standalone mGBA when you want a focused Game Boy emulator and straightforward per-system parsers.
  • Choose RetroArch when you want to switch between cores or use one interface for multiple systems.
  • Use the same emulator and core consistently for a game’s saves. Changing cores can create separate save or state files and make an existing save appear to be missing.

Install or repair mGBA through EmuDeck

  1. In Desktop Mode, open EmuDeck.
  2. Open Manage Emulators.
  3. Select mGBA and choose the install or reinstall action.
  4. Wait for the process to finish, then verify that your ROM remains in the appropriate gb, gbc, or gba folder.
  5. Run the game directly in mGBA once before creating Steam shortcuts. This confirms that the emulator, ROM, and any required BIOS are working independently of Steam ROM Manager.

If the game works when launched directly but not from Game Mode, the problem is usually the parser or shortcut configuration rather than the ROM itself.

Create Steam Game Mode shortcuts with Steam ROM Manager

Steam ROM Manager scans the folders you configured and creates non-Steam entries. Those entries let you launch individual games from the normal Steam Game Mode library instead of opening Desktop Mode first.

  • EASY CONTENT MANAGEMENT. Easily back up, organize, and transfer your photos and videos with the SANDISK Memory Zone desktop or Android mobile app[5].
  1. In Desktop Mode, open EmuDeck and launch Steam ROM Manager.
  2. Open the parser list and enable the parser that matches your chosen emulator or RetroArch core. For standalone mGBA, use the mGBA parser; for RetroArch, use the parser associated with the core and system you configured.
  3. Run Preview or the equivalent scan action. Review the detected games, artwork, and launch commands.
  4. If a game is missing, stop here and correct its folder or parser before saving. A missing preview entry will not appear magically in Game Mode.
  5. Choose Save app list (or the current equivalent save action) to add the generated non-Steam shortcuts to Steam.
  6. Return to Game Mode and find the entries in your library. Launch one test game and verify controls, audio, display, and save behavior.

Enable only the parsers you actually use. Multiple enabled parsers can create duplicate entries for the same ROM, especially when both standalone mGBA and a RetroArch core point at the same folders.

Use EmulationStation-DE as an alternative launcher

EmulationStation-DE is another documented launcher option in the EmuDeck workflow. It presents systems and games in a console-style interface rather than adding every game as an individual Steam shortcut. Choose it when you want a unified library view and do not need each ROM to have its own Steam entry.

Steam ROM Manager and EmulationStation-DE are alternative presentation layers. You can test one first and switch later; your ROMs and emulator configuration remain in the Emulation folder.

Configure controls, display, and saves

Start with global defaults

Launch a game in Game Mode and open the Steam overlay to adjust the controller layout if a button is unmapped. Keep emulator-wide defaults conservative so every Game Boy title has a predictable control scheme.

  • Map the Deck’s directional pad to the emulator’s D-pad and the face buttons to A and B.
  • Assign Start and Select to convenient buttons or back paddles if you use them frequently.
  • Keep an escape or emulator-menu action available through the Steam overlay or a documented hotkey so you can save and exit cleanly.

Use per-game overrides only when necessary

EmuDeck recommends per-game tweaking when a particular title needs customization. Use an override for unusual aspect-ratio preferences, a title-specific control layout, or a game that behaves differently from the rest of your library. Avoid changing global settings to fix one ROM; that can make every other game less predictable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect save data

Distinguish an in-game battery save from a save state. In-game saves are the portable progress files expected by the game, while save states capture the emulator at a specific moment and can be more sensitive to emulator or core changes. Back up the emulator’s save and state directories before reinstalling, changing storage devices, or switching cores.

Make RetroDECK shortcuts and controls work

RetroDECK’s workflow is different from EmuDeck’s individual-parser approach. Confirm that RetroDECK has been added to Steam as a non-Steam game, then launch its configurator to select systems, folders, and controller behavior. If individual games are not listed in Game Mode, use RetroDECK’s own launcher or configurator rather than trying to point Steam ROM Manager at EmuDeck directories.

Keep RetroDECK’s ~/retrodeck/ structure intact. Moving a subfolder without changing the corresponding RetroDECK setting can make a library disappear even though the files still occupy disk space.

Troubleshoot missing games and launch failures

The game does not appear in Steam ROM Manager

  • Confirm the file is in the correct EmuDeck folder: gb, gbc, or gba.
  • Check that the matching parser is enabled. A GBA parser will not necessarily scan the Game Boy folder.
  • Run Preview again after moving the file, then save the app list.
  • Remove duplicate or obsolete parsers if the same title appears more than once.

The shortcut exists but the game will not launch

  • Launch the ROM directly from mGBA or RetroArch in Desktop Mode. If it fails there too, inspect the ROM and emulator configuration first.
  • Verify that the Steam shortcut still points to the emulator installed by EmuDeck and that the SD card is mounted.
  • For RetroArch, confirm that the selected core is installed and that any required BIOS file is in Emulation/bios.

A shortcut launches the wrong emulator or a stale command

Steam ROM Manager configurations can become stale after changing emulators, parsers, or storage locations. Use EmuDeck’s documented Reset configuration or Custom Reset action, then configure the intended parser again and save a fresh app list. This is safer than editing generated Steam launch commands by hand.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dolphin does not show the folder

Folders beginning with a dot, such as .var or .config, are hidden by default in Dolphin. Enable hidden files in Dolphin’s view options when you need to inspect emulator configuration data. Do not delete hidden directories casually; they can contain settings and save paths used by Flatpak applications.

RetroDECK sees no games

  • Open the RetroDECK configurator and verify its selected library location.
  • Confirm that the files are in RetroDECK’s own ~/retrodeck/ structure, not an EmuDeck Emulation/roms directory.
  • Check that RetroDECK was added to Steam as a non-Steam game if your goal is to launch it from Game Mode.

Controls work in Desktop Mode but not Game Mode

Open the Steam controller layout for the specific shortcut and select a gamepad layout rather than a keyboard-and-mouse layout. If only one title is affected, create a per-game override instead of changing the emulator-wide mapping.

A repeatable setup checklist

  • Desktop Mode is available and the chosen storage device is mounted.
  • EmuDeck or RetroDECK is installed, but not both pointed at the same library unless you intentionally maintain separate layouts.
  • Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance backups are in the matching folders.
  • Required BIOS files, if any, are legally obtained and placed in the selected emulator’s expected directory; for EmuDeck’s RetroArch setup that directory is Emulation/bios.
  • The ROM launches directly in the selected emulator.
  • The correct Steam ROM Manager parser is enabled, Preview shows the game, and the app list has been saved.
  • The shortcut launches in Game Mode with the expected controls and audio.
  • Save files and save states have a backup before you reorganize storage or change cores.

Which setup should you keep?

Keep EmuDeck if you value separate control over mGBA, RetroArch cores, parsers, and reset actions. Keep RetroDECK if its bundled package and configurator are easier for you to maintain. In either case, the dependable sequence is the same: install in Desktop Mode, use the package’s own folder layout, test a game directly, and only then create or repair the Game Mode shortcut. That order isolates file, emulator, and Steam-integration problems instead of troubleshooting all three at once.
