Install LXD from the self-contained snap, add your administrator account to the lxd group, start a new login shell, and run lxd init to choose storage, networking and API settings. Then launch an Ubuntu image with lxc launch ubuntu:24.04 ubuntu-container. Keep administration on LXD’s local Unix socket unless remote access is essential; if you enable HTTPS, protect it with certificate or token trust and firewall rules at both the VPS and provider layers.

What LXD provides on an Ubuntu VPS
LXD is a system-container and virtual-machine manager. It gives you a daemon, command-line client and reusable profiles for creating complete Linux environments rather than individual application containers. LXD is independent of Docker, so you can run LXD containers without installing or using Docker.

An Ubuntu Server cloud image might already contain LXD. Check before installing it; when it is absent, install the self-contained snap:
sudo snap install lxdThe snap supplies the daemon and client as one package. You still need to perform the post-install account and initialization steps before launching instances.

Prerequisites and decisions to make first
- An Ubuntu VPS with administrative
sudoaccess. - Enough disk capacity and I/O for the images, instance filesystems, snapshots and backups you intend to keep. Provider disk and I/O limits apply even when LXD is correctly configured.
- A decision about whether you need ordinary system containers, virtual machines, or both. Containers share the host kernel; virtual machines boot a separate kernel and require KVM capability from the VPS provider.
- A network policy. Decide which services should remain private, which (if any) need inbound access, and where firewall rules will be enforced.
- A storage choice. The convenient directory backend is suitable for evaluation, while a production VPS normally needs an appropriate dedicated backend selected for its workload.
Do not expose the LXD API merely because you want to reach an application inside a container. Publish the application through its own carefully controlled service path and leave LXD administration on the local socket whenever possible.
Install LXD and enable your administrator account
Install the snap
Run the installation command as a sudo-capable user:

Continue with group membership and initialization rather than installing a second copy by another method.
Add the account to the lxd group
LXD’s local client normally talks to a Unix socket. Membership in the lxd group grants access to that socket, so it is effectively administrative access to the host. Add only trusted administrators:
sudo usermod -aG lxd "$USER"
newgrp lxdnewgrp lxd starts a shell with the new group immediately. Alternatively, log out and start a completely new login session. If you skip this step, commands can fail with a permission error even though id or the account database shows the group.

Treat membership like root-level access: review who has it, remove stale accounts, and avoid granting it to an application service account that does not need host control.

Run lxd init deliberately
Initialize the daemon after installing the snap and refreshing your login shell:
lxd initThe initializer covers clustering, networking, storage pools and daemon access. Read each prompt as a design decision rather than accepting defaults blindly. A single VPS does not need clustering unless you have a documented multi-node plan; a cluster decision affects how the daemon is operated later.
Minimal initialization for a disposable test VPS
For a temporary experiment, use:
lxd init --minimalThis creates a basic configuration using a dir storage pool and a simple network setup. It is convenient for checking that LXD works, but the directory backend is less optimized for snapshot operations, copy and launch speed, quotas and backup performance. Do not mistake a successful minimal setup for a production storage design.

Production initialization
Use the interactive initializer for a long-lived VPS. Record the answers in your deployment documentation, and make sure they match the provider’s disk and networking limits.
- Clustering: enable it only when the VPS is part of an intentional LXD cluster. A standalone host should have a simple standalone configuration.
- Networking: choose whether LXD should create a managed bridge. A managed bridge such as
lxdbr0gives instances a predictable virtual network and address allocation. - Storage: choose a backend appropriate to your workload and available disks. Directory or loop-backed storage is useful for evaluation; production should use a suitable dedicated backend and account for snapshot and backup requirements.
- Daemon access: keep the API on the local Unix socket unless a genuine remote administration requirement exists.
For repeatable builds, put the same decisions in a reviewed YAML preseed file and apply it with:
lxd init --preseedFeed the command the approved YAML through standard input or your deployment automation. Store the file in version control with secrets handled separately; a preseed file should document the intended topology, pools, bridge and access policy, not become an unreviewed shortcut around them.
Choose storage with the workload in mind

LXD can launch an instance on a technically valid pool even when that pool is a poor operational choice. Test image import, copy, snapshot and restore behavior before committing production workloads. Keep free space for package updates and snapshots; a full VPS filesystem can prevent both the host and its instances from recovering cleanly.

Understand the managed bridge and forwarding changes
A managed bridge gives instances a virtual interface and lets LXD provide local addressing. The convenience has a host-wide consequence: creating the bridge enables IPv4 forwarding globally, and enables IPv6 forwarding where applicable. The host is therefore capable of routing traffic between interfaces.
Before publishing a container service, review:
- Which host interfaces can route to the bridge.
- Whether the VPS provider already applies network filtering or disables forwarding.
- Host firewall rules for inbound, outbound and forwarded traffic.
- Any cloud firewall or security-group rules outside the VPS.
- Whether the container should be reachable only from the host, from a private network, or from the public Internet.
Do not assume that a container’s private address is a security boundary. Forwarding and firewall policy determine whether packets can cross from an external interface to the bridge. A service can remain private even when the bridge exists, but that requires explicit rules and application binding choices.
Launch and verify your first Ubuntu container
Once initialization completes, launch the documented Ubuntu 24.04 image:
lxc launch ubuntu:24.04 ubuntu-containerThe general form is lxc launch <image_server>:<image_name> <instance_name>. The command downloads the image, creates an instance on the selected storage pool and applies the default profile.
Check state, configuration and access
lxc list
lxc info ubuntu-container
lxc exec ubuntu-container -- bashUse the commands in this order when diagnosing a new instance:
lxc listconfirms that the instance exists, is running and has an address.lxc info ubuntu-containershows detailed state, devices and runtime information.lxc exec ubuntu-container -- bashopens a shell inside the running instance for package, process and network checks.
Confirm that the instance is running, uses the expected default profile, receives a root disk from the pool selected during initialization, and has a network interface attached to the intended bridge. If an address is missing, inspect the bridge and profile before changing application configuration.
Containers or virtual machines?

lxc info | grep -FA2 'instance_types'If virtual-machine is absent from the output, the platform is not advertising the required capability. Use containers, or move to a VPS plan that exposes KVM (and any required nested-virtualization support). Do not attempt to force a VM configuration on a host that cannot provide it.
Keep administration local, or expose HTTPS intentionally
Default local access
By default, LXD is socket-activated and listens on a local Unix socket. This is the safest administrative posture for most single-server deployments: the API is not reachable from the Internet, and trusted administrators use the local client after joining the lxd group.
When remote API or UI access is necessary
To make LXD available to another machine, configure the daemon’s core.https_address setting to a deliberate HTTPS bind address and port. Bind only the interface and port you intend to use; avoid an unrestricted listener when a private management address is available.
Remote clients must then establish trust using LXD certificates or tokens. Trust is an authentication decision, not a side effect of opening a TCP port: issue access only to named administrators or automation, rotate credentials when staff or systems change, and remove obsolete trust entries.

- On the VPS, allow the chosen TCP port only from approved management networks in the host firewall.
- At the cloud or VPS provider layer, apply the corresponding network-security rule. A provider firewall can block unwanted traffic before it reaches the host.
HTTPS encryption does not replace firewall policy, and a firewall does not replace client trust. Use both. If you only need to administer one VPS, leave core.https_address unset and use SSH to run the local client instead.
Use profiles to make instance configuration predictable
A profile is a reusable bundle of instance configuration. The default profile normally supplies a network interface, which is why a newly launched container can obtain an address without a custom device definition.
Create a custom profile when you need predictable placement, limits or isolation. Define both a root disk and a network interface explicitly instead of relying on an implicit default:

- The root disk device should point to the intended storage pool and mount as the instance root filesystem.
- The network device should attach to the bridge or network that the workload is allowed to use.
- Any resource limits or isolation settings should be documented with the profile so a replacement instance receives the same policy.
Apply profiles consistently when launching or rebuilding instances. This avoids a common failure mode in which a replacement container lands on a different pool or bridge simply because the host’s default profile changed.

Interactive answers are easy to forget and difficult to audit. A reviewed preseed file records the intended LXD configuration for a VPS and can be reapplied during a rebuild with lxd init --preseed. Include the decisions that matter operationally:
- Whether the host is standalone or clustered.
- Storage-pool names, drivers and source devices or paths.
- Managed network and bridge settings.
- Daemon access policy, including whether an HTTPS address is enabled.
- Profiles and the root-disk and NIC devices they provide.
Review changes before applying them. A preseed file is powerful enough to alter routing and remote administration; treat it like infrastructure code, protect any embedded credentials, and test it on a disposable VPS first.
Troubleshoot the first setup
“Permission denied” from lxc
The account probably has not entered a new login shell after the group change. Run newgrp lxd or log out and back in. If the problem persists, verify that the intended account, rather than a different service user, is invoking the client. Remember that granting the group is equivalent to granting powerful host control.
The instance launches but has no useful network access
Check lxc list and lxc info ubuntu-container for an interface and address. Then inspect the default or custom profile’s NIC device and confirm it attaches to the intended managed bridge. Review host forwarding and firewall rules, including provider-level rules. A running container does not prove that forwarding or Internet egress is permitted.

Remote clients cannot connect
Confirm that core.https_address is bound to the intended address, that the VPS firewall and provider firewall permit the selected port from the management source, and that the client has a trusted certificate or token. Do not solve a trust failure by opening the port to the entire Internet.
Snapshots or backups are unexpectedly slow
Check whether the pool is using the directory backend or a loop-backed evaluation setup. The documented dir configuration is less optimized for snapshots, copy and launch speed, quotas and backup performance. Reassess the storage backend and the provider’s disk and I/O limits before tuning individual containers.
Virtual-machine launches fail
Run the instance-type check and look for virtual-machine. If it is not advertised, the VPS lacks the KVM capability LXD needs. Continue with containers or select a plan that exposes virtualization extensions; changing an LXD profile cannot create missing host hardware support.
