Docker is a practical alternative when you want container-managed upgrades and persistent host volumes. The procedure below covers both approaches, first-start password setup, networking, automatic startup, security, backups, upgrades, and the failure modes most likely to stop a VPS deployment.

What you need before installing OrientDB
OrientDB is a Java database server. The current project README states that the server needs Java JDK version 17 or a newer major version; install a full JDK rather than only a runtime package. OrientDB Community Edition 3.2.57 is the concrete release covered here, but check the release you intend to deploy before downloading because version tags change.

- A supported Linux VPS with enough persistent disk for the database, logs, and backup copies. There is no universal VPS size: measure your working set, query load, JVM needs, and recovery objectives.
- Root or sudo access for operating-system updates, package installation, firewall changes, and service setup.
- A DNS name or private address for administration, plus a defined application network if clients will connect remotely.
- A backup destination outside the VPS. A second disk on the same machine does not protect against loss of the machine or its filesystem.
Do not expose a new database directly to the public internet while you are still testing it. Decide which administrator addresses need Studio over HTTP and which application networks need the binary protocol before opening any cloud security-group or host-firewall rule.
Choose a deployment method
| Decision area | Binary archive | Docker |
|---|---|---|
| Upgrade and rollback | You control the extracted release directory and can switch a stable symlink after testing. | You control image tags and can replace the container while retaining host volumes. |
| Service integration | Integrates directly with the Linux service manager and filesystem permissions. | Requires a container restart policy or an external service definition. |
| Data and configuration | Remain in the OrientDB installation and data paths you manage. | Must be mapped to persistent host paths or named volumes. |
| Operational familiarity | Best when your team already operates Java services on Linux. | Best when your team already has container logging, monitoring, and lifecycle procedures. |
| Backup handling | Back up the database and configuration directories from the host. | Back up the mounted database, configuration, and backup paths, not the disposable container layer. |
Use one method for a given server unless you have a specific migration plan. Running an archive installation and a container on the same host can cause port and data-directory confusion.

Install OrientDB from the binary archive
1. Update the VPS
On Debian or Ubuntu, update the operating system before adding a database service:
sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
Reboot if the operating system requests it, then reconnect over SSH. Other distributions use their own package manager and service conventions; keep the same goals: current security updates, a supported JDK, and a persistent filesystem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2. Install and verify Java JDK 17 or newer
For a Debian- or Ubuntu-based VPS, the package name is commonly:
sudo apt install openjdk-17-jdk wget tar
java -version
The output must show a major version of 17 or higher. If several Java installations exist, check which executable the OrientDB service will receive through its service environment. A JRE-only installation can leave the server without the tools expected by the distribution.
3. Download the exact OrientDB release
Download the archive to a temporary directory. This command is the official Maven repository URL for Community Edition 3.2.57:
cd /tmp
wget https://repo1.maven.org/maven2/com/orientechnologies/orientdb-community/3.2.57/orientdb-community-3.2.57.tar.gz -O orientdb-community-3.2.57.tar.gz
Keep the version in the filename. Before production use, record the release you selected and obtain a checksum from the release source when one is published. Do not silently replace a tested archive with a different major or minor version.

4. Extract into a versioned directory and create a stable path
A versioned directory makes a later upgrade or rollback understandable. The stable path keeps service configuration independent of the release number:
sudo tar -xzf /tmp/orientdb-community-3.2.57.tar.gz -C /opt
sudo ln -sfn /opt/orientdb-community-3.2.57 /opt/orientdb
The archive may create a directory whose exact name follows the release packaging. Confirm the result with ls -la /opt; if the extracted directory has a different name, point the symlink at that actual directory. Keep old release directories until the new one has passed a restore and rollback test.

5. Create an unprivileged service account
OrientDB should not run as root. Create a system account, then assign ownership of the installation and any data directories it will use:
sudo useradd --system --home /opt/orientdb --shell /usr/sbin/nologin orientdb
sudo chown -R orientdb:orientdb /opt/orientdb
If you keep data or backups outside the installation directory, create those paths explicitly and grant the orientdb account only the permissions it needs. Restrict configuration and database directories so ordinary users cannot read credentials or modify server settings.

6. Set the home path and inspect server configuration
OrientDB uses the directory in ORIENTDB_HOME as its installation home. For an interactive test, set it for the command:
export ORIENTDB_HOME=/opt/orientdb
The server configuration is $ORIENTDB_HOME/config/orientdb-server-config.xml. Make a copy before editing:
sudo cp /opt/orientdb/config/orientdb-server-config.xml /opt/orientdb/config/orientdb-server-config.xml.initial
Review listener bind addresses, ports, authentication-related settings, and any path settings required by your environment. Bind management access to a private interface where possible. The configuration is loaded when the server starts, so changes require a restart to take effect.
7. Start once in the foreground
Run the first start as the service account so you can see errors directly:
sudo -u orientdb env ORIENTDB_HOME=/opt/orientdb /opt/orientdb/bin/server.sh
On first startup, OrientDB asks you to set the root password. Use a long, unique secret generated for this server and store it in an approved password manager. Do not put it in shell history, a source repository, or an application configuration file.
Leave this process running while you verify connectivity. Stop it with the local shutdown script when finished:
/opt/orientdb/bin/shutdown.sh
The official shutdown procedure also documents host, port, user, and password parameters for stopping a remote server. Use those parameters only through a protected administrative channel and avoid placing the password in a command that other users can see through process listings.
OrientDB ports and firewall design
The default listeners are TCP 2424 for binary client and console traffic and TCP 2480 for HTTP, REST, and OrientDB Studio. They are exposed on configured networks by default, so a VPS firewall must limit the source networks before you attach a public address.
| Port | Purpose | Recommended source |
|---|---|---|
| 2424/tcp | Binary protocol, clients, and console traffic | Only application hosts, bastion hosts, or private network ranges that require it |
| 2480/tcp | HTTP, REST, and Studio | Administrators through a VPN, private network, or tightly limited office address |
For UFW, an example policy that allows only a known administrator and application network is:
sudo ufw allow from ADMIN_IP to any port 2480 proto tcp
sudo ufw allow from APP_NETWORK_CIDR to any port 2424 proto tcp
sudo ufw deny 2424/tcp
sudo ufw deny 2480/tcp
sudo ufw status verbose
Replace the placeholders with real addresses and make sure SSH remains allowed before enabling or reloading the firewall. Apply equivalent rules in your cloud provider’s security group or network ACL; a host firewall alone does not protect a port if the upstream firewall permits unintended traffic. If you change listener addresses or ports in orientdb-server-config.xml, update both firewall layers and your client connection strings.
Verify Studio and create application credentials
From an allowed administrative network, open http://SERVER_ADDRESS:2480 in a browser and sign in with the root credentials created during first start. If the page does not load, check the process log, the listener bind address, the VPS firewall, and the cloud firewall in that order.
Use root only for server administration. Create a separate database user for each application or trust boundary, assign the smallest role that supports its queries, and rotate those credentials independently. Application connection strings should never contain the root password. Treat Studio’s default HTTP endpoint as an administrative interface, not as encrypted transport: place it behind a VPN, private network, or TLS-terminating reverse proxy with authentication when it must be reached across an untrusted network.

Use the Unix/Linux service procedure appropriate to your distribution to create a service that runs server.sh as the orientdb account, sets ORIENTDB_HOME=/opt/orientdb, and starts only after the filesystems and network it needs are available. There is no single universal unit file: the correct paths, hardening directives, Java environment, logging policy, and account settings depend on the distribution and your filesystem layout.
After creating the distribution-specific service definition, test it rather than assuming boot persistence works:
Rank #4
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now orientdb
sudo systemctl status orientdb
sudo journalctl -u orientdb -e
Reboot during a maintenance window and confirm that the service comes back without an interactive password prompt. Test a clean stop and restart as well. Keep the service definition under configuration management so an archive upgrade cannot accidentally remove it.
Install OrientDB with Docker
The official image provides a quick start. This publishes both default listeners and supplies the initial root secret through an environment variable:
docker run -d --name orientdb
-p 2424:2424 -p 2480:2480
-e ORIENTDB_ROOT_PASSWORD='replace-with-a-strong-secret'
orientdb:3.2
Replace the example secret before running the command. Pin a tested image tag instead of relying on an unqualified latest tag. Apply the same network restrictions described for a binary install; publishing a port with Docker does not bypass the need for a cloud or host firewall.
Persist Docker data, configuration, and backups
A container layer is disposable. Mount separate host paths or named volumes for configuration, databases, and backups. The following example uses host directories:
sudo mkdir -p /srv/orientdb/config /srv/orientdb/databases /srv/orientdb/backup
docker run -d --name orientdb
-p 2424:2424 -p 2480:2480
-v /srv/orientdb/config:/orientdb/config
-v /srv/orientdb/databases:/orientdb/databases
-v /srv/orientdb/backup:/orientdb/backup
-e ORIENTDB_ROOT_PASSWORD='replace-with-a-strong-secret'
orientdb:3.2
Set ownership and permissions on those directories to match the user expected by the image, then verify that the container can create and reopen a test database. Do not mount an empty host directory over /orientdb/config: the image documentation warns that this hides the supplied configuration and can make OrientDB start with only a minimal configuration. If you need a custom configuration, initialize it deliberately, review it, and then mount it.
Override JVM settings deliberately
The image supports startup overrides through -D options and JVM heap flags. The official example uses -Xmx8g, but that is not a default sizing recommendation. Choose heap limits from workload measurements and available VPS memory, leaving room for the operating system, filesystem cache, container overhead, and other services. A heap that consumes nearly all RAM can cause swapping or an out-of-memory termination even when OrientDB itself is configured correctly.
Backups, disk capacity, and recovery
Back up databases and configuration to storage outside the primary VPS, and periodically perform a restoration to a separate test environment. The reviewed OrientDB material does not define a universal backup interval; choose one from your recovery-point and recovery-time objectives, transaction volume, and the cost of losing changes.
- Reserve disk headroom for database growth, transaction or log files, temporary exports, and at least one backup operation.
- Protect backup files as sensitive data because they may contain database contents and configuration secrets.
- Record the OrientDB release, Java major version, configuration copy, and restore procedure with each backup set.
- Monitor disk utilization and JVM memory; a full disk can prevent writes, logs, clean shutdowns, and recovery.
A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a recovery plan. Test both archive-based and Docker-based restores using the same permissions and version compatibility checks as production.
Best Value
Upgrade or roll back safely
For a binary deployment, stop OrientDB, back up databases and configuration, download the newer archive, extract it into a new versioned directory, and switch the /opt/orientdb symlink only after checking compatibility. Preserve the old directory until the new release has passed startup, client-connection, and restore tests. Review configuration changes rather than blindly copying an old XML file over a new release’s defaults.
Recommended Free Tools
For Docker, pull the exact tested tag, stop and remove the old container while retaining the three persistent mounts, then create the replacement with the same paths and environment settings. Never delete the host database or configuration directories as part of container cleanup. Keep the previous image tag available until rollback has been rehearsed.
Binary versus Docker: which is better for a VPS?
Choose the binary archive when you want direct systemd integration, explicit filesystem ownership, and release switching through directories and symlinks. Choose Docker when your team already standardizes container lifecycle, image promotion, volume backups, and log collection. Neither option removes the need to manage Java compatibility, network restrictions, credentials, disk growth, or tested restores.
A single-node VPS is the simpler starting point. A distributed deployment adds failure tolerance but also requires cluster discovery, additional network design, more capacity, and operational testing. The Docker image demonstrates a distributed startup flag, but a production cluster needs a separate architecture and validation process; do not treat that flag as a complete high-availability design.
Troubleshooting common installation failures
java: command not found or an unsupported version
Install a full JDK and run java -version as the same account and environment used by the service. If an interactive shell sees Java but systemd does not, define the Java path or environment in the service configuration rather than relying on a user’s profile file.

Run server.sh in the foreground as the service account and read the first error. Common causes are an incorrect ORIENTDB_HOME, a symlink pointing to a missing release directory, insufficient permissions on databases or logs, an invalid XML edit, or insufficient memory. Correct one issue at a time and restart.
Studio is unreachable
Confirm that the process is running, that it is listening on the intended address and TCP 2480, and that both the cloud firewall and host firewall allow the administrator’s source address. A listener bound only to localhost cannot be reached through the VPS public address; bind it to a private interface or use a controlled tunnel instead of opening it broadly.
Applications cannot connect on port 2424
Check the client address, protocol, configured listener, and source-network rule. Do not open 2424 to all internet addresses as a diagnostic shortcut. If the server was moved behind a private network, update the application route and security-group rule together.
Docker starts with missing or minimal settings
Inspect volume mounts first. An empty host directory mounted at /orientdb/config masks the image’s configuration. Remove the incorrect mount only after preserving any files you need, initialize the directory intentionally, and recreate the container with tested persistent paths.

Check systemctl is-enabled orientdb, the service account’s access to every mounted path, the ordering of network and filesystem dependencies, and journalctl -u orientdb. Re-test after a real reboot; an interactive shell’s exported variables do not automatically exist in a service manager.
Quick Recap
Production readiness checklist
- JDK 17 or newer is installed and verified for the actual service environment.
- OrientDB runs as an unprivileged account with restricted directory ownership.
- The root password is unique, long, stored securely, and absent from application settings.
- Applications use separate least-privilege users and roles.
- Ports 2424 and 2480 are limited to required private or administrative networks.
- Studio is protected by a VPN, private network, or authenticated TLS reverse proxy.
- Disk and JVM memory utilization are monitored with alert thresholds.
- Configuration, database, and backup paths are persistent and included in restore procedures.
- Off-host backups have been restored successfully in a test environment.
- Automatic startup, clean shutdown, upgrade, and rollback have all been tested.
