The safest route is ionCube’s Loader Wizard: it detects the correct package and configuration directive for that specific web SAPI. If you install manually, extract the matching Linux archive, place the correct ioncube_loader_lin_<version>.so file in a readable extension directory, add one zend_extension directive, restart the relevant PHP-FPM or Apache service, and verify both CLI and web PHP separately.

A successful command-line check does not prove that a website can load encoded files. CLI PHP and web PHP often use different binaries, versions, configuration files, and extension scan directories, so validation must be performed against the SAPI that actually runs the application.

What ionCube Loader does
ionCube Loader is a PHP engine extension. It processes and executes encoded PHP files and performs operations such as license validation. Applications distributed as ionCube-encoded files cannot start correctly unless a compatible Loader is active in the PHP runtime that serves those files.
The Loader is not a PHP package manager and it does not encode source code itself. It is a runtime component loaded by PHP at startup, before the application requests an encoded file. A missing, unreadable, duplicated, or incompatible extension directive therefore causes a startup warning or an application-level message that the Loader is not installed.

Loader support is available by default on some web hosts, but a self-managed VPS normally requires you to install and configure it. The installation is specific to each PHP runtime: a Loader enabled for CLI PHP may be absent from PHP-FPM, Apache’s module, a second installed PHP version, or a container running the site.
Compatibility decisions to make before downloading
Do not choose a file merely because its name contains “Linux.” Four properties have to line up:

A loader for one minor release is not interchangeable with another.
- Operating-system and CPU package: choose the archive for the VPS architecture and C library environment. The production table lists Linux 32-bit, Linux 64-bit, musl Linux, ARMv7l, and ARM64 packages.
- Thread safety: non-thread-safe and thread-safe builds use different filenames. For example, a non-thread-safe PHP 8.4 build uses
ioncube_loader_lin_8.4.so; a thread-safe build usesioncube_loader_lin_8.4_ts.so. - Encoded-file requirements: the application’s encoded files must support the PHP and Loader combination you deploy. A Loader can be installed correctly and still reject files encoded for an incompatible environment.
Package architecture and filename suffix are separate decisions. An ARM64 archive still needs the filename corresponding to the PHP minor version and thread-safety mode inside that archive; do not infer one from the other.
Current production versions
The official production download table records Loader 15.5.0 packages for Linux 32-bit, Linux 64-bit, musl Linux, ARMv7l, and ARM64. PHP 8.5 loaders in that table were released on 2026-03-12. Release notes record Loader 15.5.1 on 2026-09-18, with fixes for PHP 8 Observer API environments, Opcache-related crashes, and clearer errors for incompatible environments. Because support changes, check the current production table and release notes immediately before a production installation rather than relying on an archived package name.
Inspect the VPS and the PHP runtime
Connect over SSH with an account that can read PHP configuration and write to the chosen extension directory. Record the runtime details before downloading anything.

uname -mInterpret the results as a set. php -v supplies the CLI PHP version; use its minor number when selecting a loader. php --ini shows the loaded configuration file and the directory scanned for additional .ini files. extension_dir identifies where PHP normally looks for shared extensions. The thread-safety query distinguishes a thread-safe build from a non-thread-safe one, and uname -m reports the machine architecture.
These commands describe CLI PHP only. A VPS can have several PHP versions installed, and the web server may pass requests to a different PHP-FPM pool or Apache PHP module. To identify the web runtime, create a temporary document containing the following and request it through the same virtual host that will run the application:

Delete the diagnostic file immediately after recording those values. A public phpinfo() page exposes server details and should never be left online.
Build a compatibility record

Preferred method: use the Loader Wizard
ionCube recommends the Loader Wizard to assist with installation. The Wizard is a PHP diagnostic script that runs in the target web environment, identifies the machine-specific Loader package, and gives the configuration line required for that server.
- Download the Loader Wizard script from ionCube’s official download resources.
- Upload it to the web space for the same virtual host and PHP-FPM or Apache path that will run the encoded application.
- Open the script in a browser over the target site and allow it to inspect the web SAPI.
- Follow its package and configuration instructions exactly. Use the path and directive it reports rather than substituting a file selected for a different PHP version or architecture.
- Apply the displayed configuration, restart the indicated PHP-FPM pool or Apache service, and run the Wizard again to confirm that the Loader is detected.
- Remove the Wizard script after diagnosis unless you have a controlled, access-restricted reason to retain it.
Running the Wizard through the real virtual host matters. Running it from a shell, a maintenance domain, or a different PHP version can produce instructions for the wrong SAPI. If the application uses separate pools, repeat the check for the pool that serves that application.

Manual installation on a Linux VPS
Manual setup is useful when the Wizard cannot be exposed to the web, when deployment is automated, or when you need to control the exact extension path. The sequence is the same on Debian-family and RPM-family systems; the configuration directory and service name are distribution-specific, so discover them from the target SAPI instead of assuming a path.
1. Download the matching production archive
Use the official production table and select the archive that matches the recorded architecture and Linux environment. Select the PHP minor-version loader inside that archive. On a non-thread-safe Linux PHP 8.4 runtime, the expected filename pattern is:

ioncube_loader_lin_8.4_ts.soReplace 8.4 with the actual minor version reported by the target SAPI. Do not copy a PHP 8.3 file into a PHP 8.4 configuration simply because both are installed on the same VPS.
2. Extract and identify the shared object
Extract the downloaded archive in a temporary directory, then list its contents and select the file for the target PHP minor version and thread-safety mode. Keep the original archive until verification is complete so you can recover if the wrong file is selected.

3. Place the file in a protected extension directory
Copy the selected .so file into the extension directory used by the target SAPI, or into another protected directory that PHP can read. The path shown by extension_dir is the normal first choice. Use an absolute path in the configuration directive even when the file is inside PHP’s extension directory.

# Confirm ownership and read permissions for the PHP processThe PHP worker must be able to read the file and every parent directory in its path. Avoid placing a production extension in a world-writable temporary directory. Preserve the file’s binary format; do not rename a loader for one PHP minor version to make it appear to match another.
4. Add one zend_extension directive
Create a small configuration file in the directory scanned by the target SAPI. On a Debian-style layout, an example is /etc/php/<version>/mods-available/00-ioncube.ini; use the actual PHP version and configuration tree reported by that SAPI.
zend_extension=/full/path/to/ioncube_loader_lin_<version>.soReplace the placeholder with the full filesystem path, including the exact filename. The directive must be zend_extension, not a regular extension directive, because ionCube Loader is a Zend engine extension.
Enable the file using the distribution’s PHP configuration mechanism, then search every scanned configuration file for existing ionCube entries. Only one directive should load the Loader for a given PHP process. A second entry can trigger startup errors or confusing ordering behavior.

Restart the relevant PHP-FPM pool or Apache service after changing configuration. Restarting an unrelated CLI shell, a different PHP-FPM version, or a reverse proxy does not reload PHP extensions. Use the service name and pool that the virtual host actually references.

Check service status and startup logs immediately after the restart; a failed worker may leave the website showing a generic gateway error rather than an obvious Loader message.

CLI checks
Run both checks against the same CLI binary whose configuration you edited:
php -m | grep -i ionCube
php --ri ionCube tLoaderThe first command should list ionCube, and the second should print the extension’s information rather than an “Extension ‘ionCube Loader’ not present” message. If the command reports a startup warning, stop and correct that warning before testing the application.
Web-SAPI checks
Run the Loader Wizard again through the application’s virtual host, or temporarily inspect the web phpinfo() page. Confirm that:

- the web PHP version has the same minor version for which the file was installed;
- the web Loaded Configuration File and scan directory include the directive;
- the web extension_dir points to the directory containing the readable file;
- the web page reports ionCube Loader as loaded; and
- the encoded application starts without a Loader or license-validation error.
Remove the temporary diagnostic page after verification. A CLI success followed by a browser failure almost always means that the two SAPIs are reading different configuration trees, using different PHP versions, or running different services.
Troubleshooting matrix

Operational and security checks
- Keep the Loader outside writable application directories. A protected extension directory prevents an application deployment from replacing the binary unexpectedly.
- Use one source of configuration. Duplicate entries in a global file and a per-version scan directory make upgrades difficult to diagnose.
- Record the exact PHP and Loader pairing. Keep the filename, archive architecture, release number, and configuration path in your deployment notes so a package upgrade can be reproduced.
- Recheck after PHP upgrades. Changing the PHP minor version can invalidate the existing Loader file even when the operating system and CPU remain unchanged.
- Remove diagnostic scripts. Delete the Loader Wizard and temporary
phpinfo()page when troubleshooting is finished, or restrict them to authenticated administration. - Watch Opcache and startup logs. Loader 15.5.1 includes fixes for PHP 8 Observer API environments and Opcache-related crashes; an unexpected crash after an upgrade should be compared with the current release notes before changing unrelated application code.
A repeatable deployment checklist
- Identify the PHP binary and web SAPI that serve the application.
- Record PHP minor version, architecture, thread-safety state, loaded configuration file, scan directory, and extension directory.
- Check the current production table and select the archive for that architecture and Linux environment.
- Extract the file matching the PHP minor version and, where applicable, the
_tssuffix. - Place it in a protected, readable directory and verify the absolute path.
- Add exactly one
zend_extension=/full/path/to/ioncube_loader_lin_<version>.soline to the target SAPI’s configuration. - Enable the configuration using the distribution’s mechanism and search for duplicates.
- Restart the PHP-FPM pool or Apache service that serves the virtual host.
- Verify with
php -mandphp --ri ionCube Loaderfor CLI, then verify again with the Wizard orphpinfo()through the website. - Start the encoded application, inspect logs for startup warnings, and remove diagnostic scripts.
When to stop and reassess
If the correct architecture, PHP minor version, thread-safety suffix, absolute path, permissions, and SAPI configuration all check out but encoded files still fail, treat it as a compatibility question rather than a file-placement problem. Confirm the application’s encoding requirements and the Loader release notes, especially after a PHP upgrade or a move to a new CPU architecture. The current production table should be your final authority for supported packages immediately before deployment.
