How to Install and Enable Radeon Super Resolution on an RX 5000 GPU

“QSSR” is not AMD’s documented name for the feature. Here’s how to install and enable Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) on a Radeon RX 5000 GPU.

AMD’s documented feature is Radeon Super Resolution (RSR), not “QSSR.” RSR is a driver-based upscaler supported on Radeon RX 5000 series graphics and later. Install the full AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition package version 22.7.1 or later, turn on RSR in Graphics Settings, then run a game below your monitor’s native resolution in a supported full-screen mode.

Before you start: check compatibility

  • Graphics card: a discrete Radeon RX 5000 series GPU or later. AMD also lists select AMD Advantage systems.
  • Operating system: Windows 10 or Windows 11 desktop.
  • Software: the full AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition installation, version 22.7.1 or later. AMD’s setup guide specifies this threshold; its RSR product page gives an older minimum driver version, so use the later setup-specific requirement.

AMD’s configuration instructions are at Configure Radeon™ Super Resolution with AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition. The exact controls can vary with system configuration; AMD’s guide illustrates Adrenalin 25.6.1 Full Install on an RX 9070, not an RX 5000 card.

Turn on RSR in AMD Software

  1. Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition and use its search field to find Graphics.
  2. Open Graphics Settings and, under Global Graphics, switch Radeon Super Resolution on.
  3. For a game-specific setting, open Gaming > Games, select the game’s profile, and adjust RSR there.

Turning RSR on also enables GPU Scaling. The display may go blank briefly while the setting takes effect. AMD says RSR automatically disables Radeon Chill, Radeon Image Sharpening, and Integer Scaling.

Set the game’s resolution and display mode

RSR only engages when the game renders below the monitor’s native resolution. In the game’s video settings, choose a lower resolution; RSR then scales that image up to the display resolution. Use the game’s full-screen option. AMD’s product page emphasizes exclusive full screen, while its configuration guide also covers borderless full-screen behavior. For more detail, see AMD Radeon™ Super Resolution.

Choose between RSR and in-game FSR

RSR works through the graphics driver, so it can upscale games without a built-in upscaler. FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) is integrated by the game developer. If a game offers FSR, AMD recommends using that game-specific implementation rather than enabling RSR as well; stacking both can add processing and reduce image quality.

RX 5000 compatibility depends on the particular FSR feature, not just the FSR name. AMD’s FSR Technologies page lists RX 5000 series and above for FSR 3 frame generation, and RX 590 and above for FSR 3 upscaling. Those listings do not establish support for every FSR generation or newer ML-based features on every RX 5000 card. Check the game’s own feature support and AMD’s current compatibility information.

If RSR does not activate

  • Confirm the render resolution is lower than native. If the game renders at the monitor’s native resolution, there is nothing for RSR to upscale.
  • Check display mode. Switch to full screen, preferably exclusive full screen if the game offers it; AMD identifies this mode on its product page.
  • Check the application profile. If using per-game controls, confirm you selected the correct title under Gaming > Games, or test the global setting.
  • Check the Adrenalin installation. The setup guide requires the full package at version 22.7.1 or later, not merely the older minimum driver cited on the product page.
  • Turn off RSR when using in-game FSR. Use the game’s own FSR option on its own, rather than stacking the two upscalers.
