Install GOG GALAXY
GOG GALAXY is the client-based route for installing and launching games from your GOG library. If you do not already have the client, get its installer from GOG’s official GALAXY installation instructions, then run the installer and follow the on-screen setup steps. GOG’s documented procedure is to use the installer supplied through GOG and complete the prompts it presents.
- Download the GALAXY installer from GOG.
- Run the installer you downloaded.
- Follow the on-screen instructions until setup completes.
- Open GALAXY and sign in with the GOG account that owns the game you plan to install.
The account matters because the next step is to choose the game from your library or Owned games view. Sign in to the account associated with that game, rather than assuming a game will appear in every GOG account. If you already have GALAXY installed, you can skip downloading and setting up the client and go directly to the library.

GOG describes GALAXY as an optional application. It is a way to download and install games from inside the client, not a required preliminary step for every GOG game. GOG also supports browser downloads of offline backup installers. The two approaches are separate options: choose the client for the in-client flow, or choose the browser route if you want standalone setup files. Neither option should be mistaken for a requirement to use the other.
Install a game from your library
After signing in, find the game in your library or Owned games view. GOG’s standard instructions are to select a game and click Install. The game-specific prompts then guide the installation. Controls and behavior can vary by title, so use the choices GALAXY presents for the selected game instead of expecting every title to show an identical screen.
- Open your library or Owned games view in GALAXY.
- Select the game you want to install.
- Choose Install.
- Follow the prompts for that game’s installation, including any location choice presented.
- Wait for the installation to finish before trying to launch the game.
- Select the game and choose Play when that action is available.
GOG’s installation troubleshooting instructions describe the completed game as appearing in the left sidebar, with Play available. That gives you a practical sign that the client has reached the post-installation state: select the game and use Play to open it. Do not treat a download that is still in progress as a completed installation, and do not expect the launch action to be available before GALAXY has finished installing the game.

If the game is not listed where you expect it, first confirm that you are signed in to the account that owns it and that you are looking in the library or Owned games view. Those are the places GOG’s installation flow directs you to select a game. If it is available in your account but the in-client download is the obstacle, the browser-based offline-installer route is a separate method to consider; it does not require that you install the game through GALAXY.
Choose or change where games are installed
GALAXY has settings for the folders it uses. To change the default destinations, open the cogwheel menu, choose Settings, and select the Installing, updating tab. GOG’s folder instructions identify distinct settings there: a games installation folder, a temporary game-update folder, and a separate other-downloads folder for backup installers and bonus content. Use the setting for the files you intend to move; changing one folder should not be assumed to change the others.

- Open the cogwheel menu in GALAXY.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Installing, updating.
- Review the games installation folder and, if relevant, the temporary game-update folder or other-downloads folder.
- Change the destination relevant to your intended download or installation.
The games installation folder is the setting to check when choosing where installed games should go. The temporary game-update folder is a separate destination for temporary update files. The other-downloads folder is distinct again and covers backup installers and bonus content. These are related storage choices, but they are not interchangeable: changing the game folder does not mean the temporary update files or other downloads are now using that same location.

This distinction is useful when GALAXY reports a disk problem. Check the destination associated with the files involved, not just any folder shown in settings. If a game installation reports a disk-access error or says there is not enough free space, inspect the game-installation destination first. If the issue concerns downloaded backup installers or bonus content, remember that GOG provides a separate other-downloads folder setting. GOG’s instructions identify where the settings are, but the appropriate folder depends on which kind of file you are trying to install or download.

Use the values shown in your own GALAXY settings when diagnosing a particular installation; do not assume a folder path from another computer or another user is the one selected on yours.
Galaxy installation vs. offline installers
GOG documents two download and installation routes: use GALAXY, or download standalone offline backup-installer files from the account/library in a browser. The practical choice is whether you want to select and install the game inside the client, or download setup files and run them yourself. GOG calls GALAXY optional and lists browser downloads as a separate method, so you can choose between these routes rather than treating the browser method as a step required for GALAXY.

Choose GALAXY if you want to use the client’s library selection and in-client installation sequence. Choose offline installers if you want to download setup files from your account/library in a browser and run the setup application yourself. GOG’s instructions support this comparison, but do not establish broader differences such as a universal update policy or identical behavior across all titles. Do not infer from the word “offline” that every game has the same files or that every part of every game’s behavior is identical.
The files and instructions available for a game in your account determine what the offline route involves. Some games may present multiple installer files; follow the setup application and files provided for that game rather than assuming one file or one sequence applies to every title. Once installation is complete by this route, GOG’s documented steps are to open the game’s directory and run its executable. That differs from the client route, where you select the game and choose Play.

Install with offline backup installers
- In a browser, open your GOG account and library.
- Choose the game you want to install.
- Download the game’s offline backup-installer files.
- Open the folder where the files were downloaded and run the setup application.
- Follow the setup instructions for the game.
- After installation finishes, open the game’s installation directory and run its executable.
This is an alternative to installing through GALAXY, not a prerequisite for using the client. GOG’s download guidance treats browser downloads and GALAXY downloads as distinct methods. If the client download is unsuccessful, the browser route is another method to try; if the browser download is the problem, GOG likewise advises trying GALAXY. The alternative changes the download method, so make sure you are following the instructions for the route you actually chose.
Keep the two launch steps straight. For an installation completed in GALAXY, select the game in the client and choose Play when available. For the offline-installer route, GOG’s steps point you to the game’s installation directory and its executable. Do not assume the client’s Play control is part of the standalone-installer sequence, or that running an installer is the same as launching the finished game.
GOG’s support material does not say that every title has identical offline-installer files or that its behavior is universal. Follow the files and setup instructions shown for the game in your account. The offline route is an available alternative; a GALAXY user does not need to download the offline installers as an extra step after an in-client installation.

Start by separating the stage that failed. A download that will not complete, an installation error, and a game that crashes or will not launch are different symptoms. If GALAXY shows an error code, write down that code and use the matching entry in GOG’s GALAXY error-code index. GOG’s general troubleshooting section and launching-issues guidance cover other cases.
A useful first check is to identify whether you are using GALAXY or a browser download, and whether the failure happened while downloading, installing, or launching. Then check the exact code, if one is displayed. This avoids treating every failure as corrupted files: GOG’s index identifies several distinct classes, and the appropriate next step depends on which one appears. A code is not interchangeable with a general message about a game failing to start.
The game will not download
GOG lists GALAXY and browser downloads as separate download methods and advises trying the other one if a download method fails. If a GALAXY download is unsuccessful, try the browser route. If a browser download is the problem, try GALAXY instead. Browser downloads provide standalone installers, while GALAXY provides the in-client route.

Switching methods is an alternative way to obtain the game files; it does not mean that the game has already installed. If you switch to browser downloads, follow the offline backup-installer steps: download the files from your account/library, run the setup application in the download folder, and then use the game’s executable in its installation directory. If you switch to GALAXY, select the game from the client library and choose Install. GOG’s download troubleshooting article describes the alternatives.

If a code appears after switching methods, use that code to identify the relevant category instead of repeating the download step without checking what failed.
An error code appears
- E1: GOG identifies E1 as a corrupted local game copy. Consult its corrupt-files troubleshooting article. This diagnosis applies to E1; do not assume a different code means local files are corrupted.
- E3: GOG labels E3 as a failure to connect to GOG.com servers. It is a server-connectivity category, not the disk-access or free-space category.
- E4: GOG lists E4 as a disk access error. Check the displayed code and the game-installation destination in Settings > Installing, updating, then use the matching entry in GOG’s index for the specific instructions.
- E8: GOG lists E8 as insufficient free disk space. Check which game-installation destination is selected and use the matching error-code entry. Do not confuse this with E4, which GOG identifies separately as a disk-access error.
These labels help classify the problem; they do not justify applying the same remedy to every code. For E4 and E8, the selected game folder is particularly relevant because GALAXY has a configurable games installation folder. The temporary game-update folder and the other-downloads folder are separate settings, so verify the destination that matches the files involved. For E1, use the corrupt-files article. For E3, recognize that the reported category is failure to connect to GOG.com servers. In each case, the error-specific GOG entry is the place to follow the detailed instructions.
If the message does not include one of these codes, do not assign it one based only on the fact that the game failed. Check GOG’s general troubleshooting information and the article that matches the actual symptom. The support index separates installation errors from launch issues, so identifying the stage and exact message is more useful than trying a fix intended for a different category.
The game crashes or will not launch
A completed installation and a successful launch are separate outcomes. If installation finishes but Play fails, or the game crashes, consult GOG’s launching-issues guidance and the troubleshooting material for the particular game and system. GOG’s index includes Verify / Repair for some crashes, but that is not evidence that Verify / Repair is the fix for every title or every failure to launch.

Match the instruction to what happened. A crash is not necessarily a download failure; a game that does not open is not automatically a corrupted local copy; and an error code should be handled according to its listed meaning. GOG’s support material links to separate launch-issue articles and provides Verify / Repair for some crash cases. Use those options when the applicable guidance calls for them, rather than treating one troubleshooting action as universal.

When reading a launch article, use the instructions for the specific game and system that apply to you. The documented support does not establish one fix for all games, all systems, or all launch failures. If you used offline backup installers, remember that the documented way to open the game is to run its executable from the installation directory; if you installed through GALAXY, select the game and use Play.
