Workshop handles downloading; the launcher decides what actually runs. Treat every modded save as dependent on its enabled mods, because disabling one can make that save impossible to load.
Feral Interactive warns that its mods have not been tested and may cause stability issues. A controlled install—one mod at a time, with a separate vanilla campaign and a known-good configuration—makes problems identifiable and reversible.

What safe mod management means
Three separate actions are often confused:
- Subscribe: Steam downloads the Workshop item and keeps the subscription associated with your account.
- Enable: The game’s launcher loads the subscribed mod when you start the game.
- Unsubscribe or delete: Steam or the launcher removes the item so it is no longer available to load.
A subscription is not the same as activation. You can leave several items downloaded while enabling only the entries needed for a particular campaign. This separation is the foundation of a safe setup: download what you may use, activate a small compatible set, and change one variable at a time.

Safety also means accepting the limits of third-party content. Feral’s FAQ states: “Mods have not been tested by Feral, and may cause stability issues.” A crash, missing text, broken campaign, or launcher error can therefore be caused by a mod even when the base game is working normally.

Prepare before subscribing to anything
Keep a vanilla campaign
Start or maintain one campaign with no active mods. It gives you a stable way to check whether a problem belongs to the base game or to your mod configuration, and it preserves a portable save that does not depend on Workshop content.
Read the Workshop description
Before clicking Subscribe, check the item’s stated game version, required dependencies, load-order instructions, campaign limitations, and compatibility notes. A mod that changes campaign data should be treated more cautiously than a cosmetic change, because it can become part of the save’s dependency list.
Record a known-good configuration
Write down the exact mods enabled for each long campaign, including their order if the description specifies one. Also note the date or game build on which the setup worked. If an update later causes a failure, this record lets you restore the previous configuration instead of guessing which item changed.

Change one thing at a time
For a first installation, subscribe to one mod, launch the game, and test the relevant feature. Add another only after the first has worked. A small compatible set is easier to diagnose than a large batch installed simultaneously.
Install a Workshop mod on Windows
The following is the concrete Steam workflow documented by Feral for Total War: ROME REMASTERED.

- Open Steam and go to your Library.
- Find Total War: ROME REMASTERED, then open its Community Hub.
- Choose the game’s Workshop tab.
- Open the mod you want and read its description, requirements, version notes, and compatibility warnings.
- Click Subscribe. Steam automatically downloads and installs the Workshop item; you do not need to copy files into the game directory for this supported route.
- Launch the game. Before entering a campaign, open Pre-Game Options and then Mod Manager.
- Find the subscribed item in the manager and enable it. Start with only that mod or the small set you have confirmed as compatible.
- Launch a test battle or a new test campaign before committing an important save to the configuration.
The general Total War Workshop documentation follows the same model: subscribe first, then choose the active entries in the launcher’s Mod Manager. If the item appears as downloaded but does not affect the game, return to the manager; subscription alone does not activate it.
Use the launcher Mod Manager as your control point
Enable a mod
Open the launcher before each campaign and check that the intended entry is enabled. If a mod has a dependency, enable the required item as well and follow any load-order instruction in the Workshop description. Keep the list as short as the campaign requires.
Disable a mod for testing
Disabling in the Mod Manager is the least destructive change. It leaves the Workshop download in place, so you can re-enable it without downloading again. Use this for a controlled test on a new campaign or on a save that never used the mod.
Delete an entry from the manager
When the launcher offers a trash-can control, use it to remove the selected mod when you want it gone from the game’s mod list. Deletion is different from merely switching the entry off: it is a cleanup action, not a temporary test.
Keep a reproducible order
If two or more descriptions specify an order, reproduce that order every time. Do not add unrelated items while diagnosing a failure. After a successful launch, update your written configuration so the working state can be rebuilt.

How mods affect saved games
Feral’s save warning is strict: “If you save a game while using one or more mods, you must always have those mods enabled while playing that saved game.” Feral continues: “If you disable any of those mods, you will be unable to load the saved game.”
In practical terms, a campaign save is not necessarily portable between a modded and unmodded setup. Before beginning a long campaign, decide whether it will remain mod-dependent. Keep the vanilla campaign separate, and record the active list before every major session. Do not remove or disable a campaign-affecting mod in the middle of a save unless the mod’s author explicitly documents a safe migration procedure.
If you want to test a replacement or a new load order, use a new test campaign first. A successful launch with a fresh game does not prove that an existing save can survive a changed mod list.
Disable, delete, or unsubscribe: choose the least destructive action

For a troubleshooting test, disable first. Unsubscribe and delete only after you have decided that the campaign and configuration no longer need the item.
Remove Workshop mods completely and verify the game
SEGA Support recommends a staged cleanup rather than immediately reinstalling the game.

- Open the launcher’s Mod Manager and deactivate the suspected items.
- Use the manager’s trash-can control to delete entries that should no longer be present.
- In Steam Workshop, open your subscribed items and choose Unsubscribe for the mods you are removing.
- Close the game and inspect the game’s
datadirectory for leftover mod files. - Inspect Steam’s
steamapps/workshop/contentdirectory for remaining Workshop content associated with the title. Do not delete unrelated folders. - In Steam Library, right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Open Local Files and select Verify Integrity of Game Files….
- Allow Steam to reacquire files it identifies as missing or altered, then launch with all mods disabled to establish a clean test.
SEGA’s troubleshooting guidance says that if the problem disappears after unsubscribing or deleting mods, it is almost certainly mod-related. Verification repairs the game’s managed files; it does not make an incompatible mod safe, so reintroduce items one at a time only after the unmodded launch works.

First, separate a game-build problem from a mod problem
Deactivate all mods and test a vanilla launch. If the base game also fails, verify the files before changing the Workshop list. If the vanilla game works but the modded setup fails, the mod or its interaction with another item is the likely cause.
Restore the last known-good list
Use your configuration record to return to the exact enabled set and order that previously worked. Do not add a new item while trying to reproduce the old failure. If the old list still fails after a game update, the update may have changed an interface or data structure on which the mod depends.
Check the item’s version note
Read the Workshop description again for an update notice, a required dependency, or a statement that the author supports only an older build. A mod can remain subscribed and downloaded while being incompatible with the current executable.

Do not repeatedly overwrite the only copy of a campaign while experimenting. Keep the original save untouched and test changes with a separate copy or a new campaign where possible. Because Feral requires the original mod list for modded saves, disabling an item can prevent the save from loading rather than merely removing its features.

Use an older beta only when it is available and appropriate
SEGA’s support workflow points to Steam Library → right-click the game → Properties → Betas when an older game build is needed for a mod. The available rollback branches depend on the title and publisher; there may be no suitable branch. An older build can restore compatibility with an older mod or save, but it also means giving up fixes and changes in the current build while you use it.
Workshop subscription versus manual file copying

For a supported remaster such as ROME REMASTERED, Workshop is the safer default because installation is handled by Steam. Manual copying is a deliberate exception for content not distributed through Workshop or for a version-control requirement documented by the mod author. It should not be mixed casually with a Workshop copy of the same mod.
Current build or older supported beta?

Change builds only after recording the current configuration and protecting saves. Switching versions is a compatibility decision, not a general repair for every crash.
A repeatable safe-mod workflow
- Keep a vanilla campaign and a separate modded campaign.
- Read every Workshop description for dependencies, version notes, and save warnings.
- Subscribe through the game’s Steam Workshop page.
- Open Pre-Game Options → Mod Manager and enable only the intended item or compatible set.
- Test on a new campaign before using the setup on a long-running save.
- Record the enabled mods, their order when specified, and the game build that worked.
- When testing a problem, disable one item first; do not immediately unsubscribe from everything.
- If removal is necessary, delete the entry, unsubscribe, inspect the documented
dataandsteamapps/workshop/contentlocations, and verify Steam files. - If an older mod requires it and a branch exists, use the documented Properties → Betas path while understanding the loss of current-build changes.
This process keeps installation, activation, saves, and cleanup as separate decisions. That separation is what lets you identify a bad interaction without sacrificing a working vanilla setup or an irreplaceable campaign.
