How to Install and Play Disc-to-Digital Xbox Games on a Console Without a Disc Drive

Claim an eligible Xbox One or Series X disc game on a disc-drive console, then download it on Series S with the account that received the digital license. You must continue to possess the qualifying disc.

You can play an eligible Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc game on an Xbox Series S, but you cannot claim it using the Series S itself: it has no disc drive. First use a disc-drive Xbox One or Xbox Series X to insert the qualifying disc and launch the game. Then sign in to the account that received the digital license on the Series S and download the game from your library. Microsoft’s license rules still require you to keep possessing the qualifying disc, and eligibility varies by title.

What disc-to-digital does—and what it does not do

Disc-to-digital is a way to claim a limited digital license for an eligible physical game. It is separate from ordinary disc installation: normally, a compatible disc installs the game but must remain in the drive when you play. With disc-to-digital, a supported disc is used on a disc-drive Xbox to claim the license; you can then install and play the digital version on a disc-free console under Xbox’s digital-game rules, subject to the requirement to keep possessing the qualifying disc.

The feature covers supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs, but not every disc qualifies. Xbox said the feature began with thousands of titles, without publishing an exact count, and Microsoft says eligibility may change for technical, licensing, publishing, or other reasons. Check whether your particular disc qualifies when you try to claim it rather than assuming every game will work. Xbox’s announcement describes the feature, while Microsoft’s digital-goods usage rules set out the license conditions.

How to claim and install the game

  1. Check the game and disc. Confirm that you have an Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc and try to claim it; eligibility is title-specific and can change.
  2. Use a disc-drive Xbox One or Xbox Series X. Insert the disc and launch the game on that console. This is the claim step; an Xbox Series S cannot perform it because it cannot read game discs.
  3. Use the account that received the license. Sign in to that same Microsoft account on the disc-free Xbox. The digital entitlement belongs to the account under Xbox’s digital-goods rules.
  4. Find and download the game. Open your digital library or Ready to Install list on the disc-free console, select the title, and download it. The Xbox Series S supports digital games only; see Xbox’s Series S information.
  5. Keep the qualifying disc. Microsoft says the license depends on continued possession of that disc. It may revalidate eligibility, and access may be suspended or revoked if you no longer possess it. The digital license is not transferable separately from the disc.

Which console can perform the claim?

Xbox names an Xbox One or Xbox Series X as the disc-drive console for claiming an eligible game. If you already own one—or can borrow one—you may not need to buy additional hardware. A Series S cannot read a physical game disc, and connecting storage does not change that.

Option Can it perform the disc claim? What to consider
Xbox One with a disc drive Yes, for an eligible disc and title. Useful if you already have access to one; eligibility still needs to be checked.
Xbox Series X Yes, for an eligible disc and title. Xbox identifies it as a supported claim device; it has a UHD Blu-ray drive.
Xbox Series S No. It is digital-only and cannot read the physical disc. Use it to download and play after the account has the entitlement.

Do not treat an external optical drive, copied game files, USB storage, or a storage expansion card as a way to claim a license. Storage can hold game data, but it does not make a Series S read discs or establish game ownership. If a disc does not qualify, the legitimate alternatives are to use a separately owned digital license or acquire the digital edition; neither requires the disc-to-digital claim process.

When the feature became available

Xbox announced Insider testing on August 26, 2026, saying that participants could begin testing the following week. Windows Central reported on September 30, 2026 that the feature had opened to all players on September 29. That public-rollout date is reported by Windows Central; the Xbox announcement itself described the Insider test.

What to do if the game does not appear

  • Confirm the claim console and disc. The physical claim requires a disc-drive Xbox One or Xbox Series X, and the game must be eligible.
  • Check the account. On the disc-free console, sign in with the Microsoft account that received the license.
  • Look in the digital library or Ready to Install. The game must be downloaded to the console before you can play it there.
  • Do not assume eligibility is permanent. Microsoft says it can add or remove specific-disc eligibility and may revalidate the license. If your title is not eligible, a disc alone cannot make it available digitally through this feature.

Disc-to-digital versus ordinary disc play

For normal backward-compatible disc play, insert a compatible disc to install the game and keep the disc in the drive to play; the disc serves as the physical access check. Disc-to-digital is a different process: claim an eligible digital license on a supported disc-drive Xbox, then install through the digital library on the disc-free console. Both routes depend on the relevant game and license conditions. See Xbox’s backward compatibility information for the conventional disc workflow.
