Install Steam, let it install SteamVR when the headset is detected (or install SteamVR manually), complete Room Setup, then find a demo through Steam’s Demos and VR filters. A Meta Quest 2, Quest 3 or Quest Pro can use Steam Link over a suitable Wi‑Fi network, while headsets with a PC video cable use a direct USB plus HDMI or DisplayPort connection.
What SteamVR does and what you need
SteamVR is Valve’s PC runtime for virtual-reality headsets. It provides the headset and controller interface, starts compatible VR games, and supplies tools such as Room Setup and the Chaperone boundary. SteamVR supports devices including Valve Index, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and Windows Mixed Reality headsets, but a particular demo can require additional hardware, controller features or room-scale support.

SteamVR’s current store requirements are a starting point, not a guarantee that every demo will run well. Valve lists Windows 10, 4 GB of RAM, a graphics card at least comparable to an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 or AMD Radeon R9 290, broadband internet, USB 2.0, and either HDMI 1.4 or DisplayPort 1.2. Individual titles publish their own CPU, GPU, memory, operating-system and VR-support requirements, so check the demo page before downloading.

| Item | SteamVR baseline | Why it matters for a demo |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 | The demo can impose a newer Windows version or a title-specific software dependency. |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM | This is SteamVR’s minimum; more memory may be needed for a demanding environment or for running other applications. |
| Graphics | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 or AMD Radeon R9 290 equivalent | Rendering resolution, refresh rate and visual effects are controlled by the demo and headset, so meeting the baseline does not ensure high settings. |
| Headset connection | USB 2.0 plus HDMI 1.4 or DisplayPort 1.2 | Use the connector and cable specified by your headset; DisplayPort 1.2 or newer is directly relevant for headsets that use DisplayPort. |
| Internet | Broadband internet | Steam needs connectivity for account access and downloads. Wireless streaming also depends on local network quality. |
Choose a connection route
A wired setup sends the headset’s display and tracking data over its supplied connection. It generally gives the most predictable latency and does not consume Wi‑Fi bandwidth, but you need the correct USB and video ports and a cable long enough for your play area.

A wireless setup streams the PC’s SteamVR output to a standalone headset. Meta’s Steam Link route supports Quest 2, Quest 3 and Quest Pro when the computer runs both Steam and SteamVR. Meta lists Windows 10 or newer, NVIDIA GTX 970-class graphics, and a 5 GHz Wi‑Fi 5 router as minimums. Meta recommends Wi‑Fi 6 or 6E and a wired connection from the PC to the router. Wireless quality varies with distance, walls, congestion and other traffic.
| Connection | Use it when | Check before installing demos |
|---|---|---|
| Wired PC headset | Your headset has a PC video cable and you want the least network-related variability. | Required USB port, HDMI 1.4 or DisplayPort 1.2 connection, headset software and cable length. |
| Steam Link on Meta Quest | You have Quest 2, Quest 3 or Quest Pro and a suitable home network. | Windows 10 or newer, GTX 970-class GPU, 5 GHz Wi‑Fi 5 minimum, and preferably Wi‑Fi 6/6E with the PC wired to the router. |
Prepare the PC and headset
1. Verify the computer
- Confirm that Windows 10 or newer is installed and that the PC has at least 4 GB of RAM.
- Check the graphics card against the GTX 970 or Radeon R9 290-class SteamVR baseline.
- Make sure broadband internet is available for Steam downloads and account authentication.
- For a wired headset, locate the required USB and HDMI or DisplayPort sockets. Valve’s baseline names USB 2.0, HDMI 1.4 and DisplayPort 1.2; your headset can require a different connector or adapter.
- Read the system-requirements section of the specific demo. A title may need substantially more graphics performance than SteamVR itself.
2. Install headset software when required
Some headsets need their manufacturer’s PC application, driver or portal before Steam can communicate with them. Windows Mixed Reality users should install the Windows Mixed Reality headset software and Portal first. Valve’s Windows Mixed Reality instructions then direct users to install SteamVR and launch it to begin the tutorial.
Meta Quest owners can use the vendor’s PC connection software for a cable-based route, or use Steam Link for wireless streaming. Install the software appropriate to the route you intend to use; a standalone Quest headset does not automatically become a SteamVR headset simply because Steam is installed on the computer.

Install SteamVR and configure the play area
3. Install Steam and SteamVR
- Install the Steam desktop client and sign in to your account.
- Connect the wired headset, or pair the wireless headset through its chosen PC connection method.
- Start Steam. Valve documents that SteamVR is automatically installed when Steam detects a headset connected to the PC.
- If detection does not trigger installation, open the Steam store or Library, search for SteamVR, and choose the manual install option.
- Launch SteamVR and follow its introductory tutorial. Keep the headset connected and awake while the runtime initializes.
SteamVR can be open before or after you start a demo, but opening it first makes it easier to confirm that tracking, controllers and the headset display are working. A demo that has only a desktop window is not necessarily broken; it may be a non-VR build or may have been started before SteamVR was ready.
4. Run Room Setup
Open SteamVR’s Room Setup and define the play area. Follow the on-screen process to identify the floor, trace the usable space and set the direction in which you normally face. SteamVR uses this information for the Chaperone boundary, which warns you when you approach the edge of the safe area.
Clear furniture, pets and cables from the traced area before starting a demo. If you move the headset to another room, run Room Setup again rather than relying on an old boundary. Room-scale demos can require more space than a standing or seated title, so the individual store page’s room-scale and play-area notes take priority.

Find a SteamVR demo
5. Filter Steam’s catalog
- In Steam, open Search or the store’s browse controls.
- Set the product type to Demos.
- Apply the VR filter. Steam distinguishes VR Only from VR Supported.
- Open a candidate’s store page instead of relying only on the search card.
The VR-filtered catalog contained 797 results when captured on October 16, 2026. That number is volatile: demos can be added, removed, delisted or region-limited. The live filters are therefore more reliable than a fixed recommendation list. Examples visible in the catalog at that time included “PROJECT MIX: VR Cyberpunk Bartending Demo,” “Vuntra City Environment Demo,” “FORM – Episode 1 Demo,” and “Racket:Nx Demo”; their availability and compatibility can change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches6. Read the demo’s VR information
On the individual store page, inspect the VR Support field and the system requirements before selecting Install. Valve’s support guidance notes that compatible titles can expose labels such as Windows Mixed Reality under VR Support. The page can also identify controller support, room-scale requirements and other details on the right-hand information panel.
“VR Supported” means the title offers a VR mode but may also run on a monitor or have restrictions that do not apply to a VR-only application. “VR Only” indicates that a headset is required. Neither label replaces the title’s own requirements: a demo can support your headset category while still exceeding your GPU’s capability or requiring particular controllers.

Add, install and launch the demo
7. Add it without downloading immediately
Choose Add to Library when that control is offered. Valve states that demos can be added to the Steam library without immediate installation, which is useful when you are collecting several candidates or are away from the PC you will use for VR. Some demos have a dedicated store page; others expose an install button from the full game’s page.
8. Install from the library
- Open Steam Library and select the demo’s entry.
- Choose Install, select the destination drive and confirm the download.
- Wait for Steam to finish downloading and validating the files.
- Keep enough free disk space for the download and its unpacked installation; the store page’s size is the relevant figure for that demo.
9. Start the VR session
- Connect or pair the headset and wake the controllers.
- Launch SteamVR and confirm that the headset display, base stations or inside-out tracking and controllers are visible.
- Start the demo from Steam Library, or select it from the SteamVR dashboard.
- If Steam asks whether to start in VR mode, choose the VR option. For a title marked VR Supported, select the correct mode if a desktop and VR choice appears.
Keep the first launch in a clear, well-lit space and avoid covering tracking cameras or base stations. Complete any calibration or controller tutorial supplied by the demo before changing graphics settings.

Use Steam Link with a Meta Quest headset
Steam Link is the wireless path for Quest 2, Quest 3 and Quest Pro listed by Meta. It does not run a demo solely inside the headset: the computer must be running Steam and SteamVR, and the headset receives the rendered session over the local network.

Network and PC requirements
- Windows 10 or newer on the computer.
- NVIDIA GTX 970-class graphics or better, with the demo’s own requirement checked separately.
- A 5 GHz Wi‑Fi 5 router as Meta’s minimum networking level.
- Wi‑Fi 6 or 6E is Meta’s recommended wireless standard.
- A wired Ethernet connection between the PC and router is recommended, leaving the wireless link for the headset.
Pairing procedure
- Install Steam and SteamVR on the Windows PC and sign in.
- Start SteamVR once so the runtime recognizes the PC headset-streaming session.
- In the Quest headset, install and open Steam Link.
- Follow Steam Link’s on-screen pairing instructions and select the computer running Steam.
- Accept the pairing code or confirmation shown on the PC when prompted.
- Once the SteamVR environment appears in the headset, launch the demo from the SteamVR dashboard or Steam Library.
If the pairing screen cannot find the computer, put the PC and headset on the same home network, verify that Steam is running, and check that security software is not blocking local-device discovery. Do not expect a guest Wi‑Fi network or an isolated access point to behave like the local network Meta’s pairing process requires.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Wired versus wireless: how to choose
The best route depends on the headset and the space rather than on a universal ranking. A wired connection avoids wireless compression and congestion, while wireless removes the cable from the play area. Wireless also adds network latency and can degrade when the router is distant or busy. For a seated or standing demo near the computer, wired is often simpler. For room-scale play where a cable is hazardous or inconvenient, a properly configured Steam Link network can be preferable.
| Decision factor | Wired | Wireless Steam Link |
|---|---|---|
| Headset compatibility | Depends on the headset’s PC cable, driver and ports. | Meta lists Quest 2, Quest 3 and Quest Pro for this route. |
| Graphics workload | PC renders the demo directly; compare the demo requirement with the GPU. | PC still renders the demo, and the same GPU requirement applies. |
| Network dependence | Internet is needed for Steam, but local play is not carried over Wi‑Fi. | Requires a strong local 5 GHz network; Wi‑Fi 6/6E and wired PC-to-router are recommended. |
| Latency risks | Cable length, port or driver problems. | Distance, walls, congestion and router quality can add delay or stutter. |
| Room-scale safety | Cable management must be part of the play-area plan. | No headset cable across the floor, but the wireless link must remain stable throughout the room. |
| Controller and room support | Read the demo’s VR Support and controller labels. | Read the same labels; streaming does not add support for controllers the demo does not recognize. |
Troubleshoot the common failures
The headset is not detected
- Install or update the headset’s vendor software or Windows Mixed Reality Portal, depending on the device.
- Reconnect the USB and video cables directly to the PC rather than through an unpowered hub or an incompatible adapter.
- Restart Steam, then restart SteamVR. If the headset remains absent, reboot Windows with the headset connected.
- Check that the connector matches the headset requirement and that the PC provides the HDMI 1.4 or DisplayPort 1.2 connection listed in SteamVR’s baseline.
- For support, open SteamVR Settings > General > Create System Report and provide the generated report.
The demo opens on the monitor only
- Recheck the store page’s VR Support label. A title can be VR Supported rather than VR Only, or it may not support your headset category.
- Launch SteamVR before launching the demo and wait until the headset is shown as ready.
- If a launch dialog offers desktop and VR modes, choose VR.
- Read the title’s controller and room-scale notes; a demo can start in desktop mode when its required VR hardware is unavailable.
Wireless play is blurry, delayed or stutters
- Connect the PC to the router with Ethernet, as Meta recommends, instead of using Wi‑Fi for both devices.
- Use the 5 GHz band at minimum and Wi‑Fi 6 or 6E where available.
- Move closer to the router, reduce walls between the headset and access point, and pause high-bandwidth traffic from other devices.
- Restart the router and Steam Link after changing bands or network hardware.
- Lower the demo’s render resolution or other graphics settings only after confirming that the network is stable; a GPU bottleneck and a Wi‑Fi bottleneck produce different symptoms.
Performance is below expectations
- Compare the demo’s own CPU, GPU, RAM and operating-system requirements with your PC, not just with SteamVR’s 4 GB and GTX 970/R9 290 baseline.
- Close recording, browser and overlay applications that compete for memory or GPU time.
- Start at the headset’s default refresh rate and resolution, then increase one setting at a time.
- For a wireless session, distinguish frame-rate drops caused by rendering from transmission artifacts caused by the network.
A cable warning appears
Verify that the headset’s specified cable is fully seated and connected to a compatible port. SteamVR lists HDMI 1.4 or DisplayPort 1.2 as minimum video connections, but an adapter, dock or cable can still be unsuitable for a particular headset. Test a direct connection and inspect the headset manufacturer’s connection requirements before replacing hardware.
Remove demos and keep the library organized
Adding a demo to your library does not require an immediate download. When you no longer want it, open the demo’s Steam library entry, choose Manage, and select Remove from account. This removes the demo from the account rather than merely deleting local files, so use the option only when you do not intend to keep it in the library. If you only need disk space temporarily, use Steam’s local uninstall control instead and retain the library entry.
A reliable first-session checklist
- Windows, RAM, GPU and connector requirements meet SteamVR’s baseline.
- The demo’s individual system requirements and VR Support labels have been read.
- Required headset software or Windows Mixed Reality Portal is installed.
- Steam and SteamVR are installed, signed in and able to see the headset.
- Room Setup has been completed in the actual play area.
- Controllers are charged, tracked and supported by the selected demo.
- For Quest wireless play, the PC runs Steam and SteamVR, the headset uses Steam Link, the router provides 5 GHz Wi‑Fi, and the PC is preferably wired to the router.
- The floor, furniture, pets and cable path are safe before starting room-scale content.
What to expect from SteamVR demos
SteamVR makes PC VR demos accessible through one runtime, but compatibility remains a title-by-title decision. Start with the headset connection your hardware supports, verify the demo’s VR label and requirements, configure Room Setup, and then launch from SteamVR. Catalog counts and individual listings change, so the current Steam filters and each demo’s store page are the authoritative places to confirm availability before installing.
