If your Steam account already owns Total War: SHOGUN 2, the announced standalone delisting does not remove the game from your library. Open Steam, go to Library, select the original Total War: SHOGUN 2 entry, click Install, and launch it after the download finishes.
If you never owned the original, SEGA identifies Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition as the official replacement purchase. It includes the original game and its downloadable content, but the exact store listing, price, region availability, and activation terms can change. What the delisting changed
SEGA’s Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition FAQs announced that the original game would stop being sold as a standalone Steam purchase at 28 September 2026, 17:00 BST / 16:00 UTC. That is a change to the store offer, not a cancellation of existing licenses. The same FAQ says existing owners keep access, the original remains playable, and current Steam owners receive any DLC they do not already own at no charge.
The product situation then became less settled. A Steam Community announcement from SEGA and Creative Assembly said they were working with platform holders to remove the Complete Edition from sale and reinstate the original while investigating reported issues. The announcement also said existing owners would still be able to access and play the game. Storefront status can therefore change after the dates below; rely on the current official listing for a new purchase.

For an account that already has the original license, the practical result is straightforward: install the original library entry. For someone starting from zero, identify which edition is currently sold and read its platform and activation details before checkout.
Before installing: verify the account and setup
Most “missing game” reports after a delisting are account or library-view problems rather than a removed license. Complete these checks before reinstalling Steam or buying another copy.
- Use the owning Steam account. Sign out of shared, family, or secondary accounts and sign in to the account that bought or redeemed Total War: SHOGUN 2.
- Use the original library search. Search for Total War: SHOGUN 2, not only for “Complete Edition.” The original and the bundled product can appear as separate library entries.
- Check filters and hidden games. Clear collection filters, installed-only views, operating-system filters, and any hidden-games list.
- Prepare storage. Steam will show the required space when you select a destination drive. Keep additional room for updates, shader data, saves, and Workshop content.
- Update the Steam client and graphics driver. The published game requirements are legacy specifications; a current client and driver reduce avoidable launch failures.
- Back up mod configuration if it matters. Record the Workshop subscriptions and any local files you use before changing editions or removing the installation.
How to install the original from Steam
- Launch the Steam desktop client and sign in to the account that owns the original game.
- Select Library in the top navigation.
- In the library search box, type
Total War: SHOGUN 2. Choose the original game entry, not a store advertisement for another edition. - Open the game’s library page and click Install.
- Choose the drive and Steam library folder where you want the files stored. Confirm the displayed disk-space requirement.
- Accept the installation prompt. Steam will download the original build and display progress in the Downloads view.
- Wait until the download and any queued updates finish. Launch with the Play button from the same library page.
- If you use original Steam Workshop content, open the game’s Workshop area and confirm that the subscriptions are associated with this original installation before starting a campaign.
The title should remain playable without a new purchase when the account already holds the license. A delisted store page does not, by itself, revoke that license under SEGA’s FAQ.

1. Confirm the account and purchase history
Steam licenses are account-specific. Check every account you may have used, including an older account or one that redeemed a retail key. If the game appears in a purchase history but not in Library, restart Steam and sign in again before trying more invasive fixes.
2. Remove library-view exclusions
Clear search text, tags, custom collections, “installed” filters, and operating-system filters. Open the hidden-games view and restore Total War: SHOGUN 2 if it was hidden. Also check that Steam is displaying all games rather than only favorites or a selected collection.

- Brand New in box. The product ships with all relevant accessories
3. Check the correct product entry
The original game may not be the page Steam currently promotes. Search the library for the exact original title and inspect each matching entry. Do not assume that owning or installing the Complete Edition will automatically present the same executable or mod environment.
4. Use Steam Support for license recovery
If the correct account, filters, and restart do not resolve the problem, use Steam Support’s Total War: SHOGUN 2 product page. Provide the account information, purchase or redemption details, and any receipt or key evidence requested by Support. Avoid unofficial cracks, license workarounds, or downloads claiming to restore a removed entitlement; they can expose the account and files to malware and do not repair the underlying Steam license.
What happens to DLC after the standalone sale ends?
SEGA’s FAQ makes a specific promise to current Steam owners: they will be granted any Total War: SHOGUN 2 DLC they do not already own, for free. The offer concerns the Steam ownership record, so it should be associated with the account that owns the game rather than with a different account on the same computer.
After the base game is installed, open its Steam library page and select the DLC panel to see which items are listed and enabled. Allow Steam to finish any separate DLC downloads. If an item is absent, verify that you are signed in to the owning account, restart the client, and then contact Steam Support rather than purchasing a duplicate bundle immediately.
SEGA also says the Complete Edition contains the original game and its DLC. That is the new-player bundle route; it does not require existing owners to buy the bundle to retain the original license or receive the announced DLC grant.

Workshop mods and the Complete Edition’s Mod.io support
Mod compatibility is the most important practical difference for players who already have a customized installation. SEGA’s FAQ states that mods for the original Total War: SHOGUN 2 remain unchanged. The Complete Edition uses integrated Mod.io support, and SEGA says original mods are not compatible with that environment.

If you rely on Steam Workshop mods
- Install and launch the original library entry rather than switching to the Complete Edition executable.
- Let Steam resubscribe and download the Workshop items associated with the original game.
- Enable only the versions intended for the original build, then test a new campaign before loading a valuable save.
- Keep a copy of local mod files and note load order so a client update or reinstall does not erase your setup.
If you move to the Complete Edition
Do not assume that a Workshop subscription will be imported into Mod.io. Check each mod’s availability for the Complete Edition and follow that platform’s installation instructions. A mod that changes the original executable, database, or campaign files may require a separate edition-specific release, or may not be available at all.
Buying the Complete Edition as a new player
SEGA identifies Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition as a PC release for Steam, Epic Games Store, and Windows, containing the original game and its DLC. This is the official purchase path described for someone who did not already own the standalone title.
Because the storefront arrangement changed around the September delisting and the October 13, 2026 release, verify these details on the live product page immediately before purchase:
- which store is actually offering the edition in your country;
- the current price and currency;
- the required account and activation method;
- the operating-system and hardware requirements shown for that edition;
- whether the listing grants the original executable you want, rather than only a separate bundled launcher;
- the store’s current refund and license terms.
Those retail details are volatile and were not established as fixed values. A listing can be removed, restored, or changed while platform holders process SEGA’s update.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Platform and compatibility requirements
Steam’s support and store material lists legacy builds for Windows, macOS, and Linux and publishes older hardware requirements for the original. Treat those figures as a baseline, not a guarantee that every modern configuration will launch perfectly. The exact current requirements for the Complete Edition may differ and should be read from its live store page.
Steam also states that its client supports Windows 10 and later from 1 January 2024. A computer running an older Windows release can therefore fail at the client level even if the game’s historical requirements appear satisfied. On a supported Windows system, update the graphics driver, install pending operating-system updates, and ensure Steam has permission to write to the selected library folder.
For macOS or Linux, confirm that the original build is still offered for your specific client and distribution before deleting an existing installation. A delisting or edition change can affect store visibility differently by platform. If the game launches but displays rendering errors, test the default configuration first and remove third-party overlays or incompatible mod files before changing multiple settings at once.

You owned the original and want your old campaign

Best Value
- The American, British and French nations played an important part in the story of the Boshin war and your relations with these foreign powers will be integral to unit recruitment and to advancing your technology trees.
- Thirty nine new land units, including modern ranged units - such as the Gatling gun and Armstrong gun - controllable in a new third-person mode.
- New port siege battle type, this new battle type triggers when attempting a naval assault on an occupied enemy port. The attacking fleet must sail into the harbour and capture the port, running the gauntlet of coastal gun defences.
- New land and sea unit interactions, during a land battle, armies can call in offshore artillery support barrages.
- Campaign map bombardments: offshore naval units can bombard armies and cities in adjacent coastal areas on the campaign map itself.
You owned the original but never installed it
The license is still the relevant fact. Find the original entry in Library, install it, and use Steam Support if the account record does not appear after clearing filters and restarting the client.
You never owned any edition
Look for the Complete Edition on the currently supported store. Confirm region, price, activation, requirements, and included content on the live listing before purchase.
You mainly care about mods
Prefer the original installation for original Workshop projects. The Complete Edition’s Mod.io environment is not a drop-in replacement for those mods, so check for edition-specific conversions before switching.
You are troubleshooting a disappearing game
Work through account, hidden-game, filter, and restart checks first. If the license still cannot be found, provide purchase evidence to Steam Support. Do not use unofficial installers.
Bottom line
The standalone delisting does not erase an existing Steam license. Sign in to the owning account, install the original Total War: SHOGUN 2 from Library, and use Steam Support if the entry is genuinely absent. SEGA says current Steam owners keep the game playable and receive missing DLC for free. New players should evaluate the Complete Edition on the live store, while anyone dependent on original Workshop mods should stay with the original executable because those mods are not compatible with the Complete Edition’s Mod.io support.
