A Doom WAD, a Quake BSP, and a Source or GoldSrc package use different file formats, directory conventions, and launch commands. Start by identifying the exact game, version, base data and required engine or source port; then follow the level author’s readme before copying anything.
This guide covers the dependable starting procedures for Doom, Quake, Source/GoldSrc games, and the modern in-game mod browser in the current DOOM + DOOM II release. It also explains how to diagnose the commonest failure: files placed in the wrong directory.

Start by identifying the game and the level’s requirements
“Classic FPS” describes an era, not a file standard. Before downloading a level, write down four things:
- Target game and edition: Original Doom, Doom II, Final Doom, Quake, a particular GoldSrc title, or a Source title may each use a different loader.
- Map format: Doom content normally arrives as a WAD; Quake maps are commonly BSP files; Source and GoldSrc releases may be archives or installers containing several folders and assets.
- Base data: Doom usually needs an IWAD (the original game data file) in addition to the custom PWAD. Other engines may require the full base game, a mod directory, or additional content.
- Engine or source port: A level can depend on a specific port, renderer, game version, or mod. A file that loads in one engine may be invisible or fail in another.
If the author names a port, mod directory, or game edition, treat that as a requirement rather than a suggestion. Do not move files until you have read the package readme.

Download the package and read it before extracting
Use a reputable game-resource site or the level author’s distribution page. Steam Support warns that custom content is used at the player’s own risk and that Steam Support does not support custom content. Downloading from a trustworthy source and retaining the original archive gives you a way to verify what you installed and remove it cleanly.
- Download the complete archive or installer for the map, not just a file with a similar name.
- Open the readme before running an installer or extracting files. Look for the supported game, required IWAD or mod, engine and version, map name, launch command, and any extra resource files.
- Inspect the extensions. A Doom package may contain
.wad; a Quake package may contain.bsp; Source or GoldSrc packages can contain multiple folders and file types. - Preserve the folders inside the archive. A package that contains a directory tree is normally expecting that tree to be copied intact. Flattening every file into one folder is a frequent cause of missing maps, textures, sounds or scripts.
- Keep a record of where you installed it. If the map fails, you can compare the destination with the archive and remove only the custom files.
How Doom WAD loading works
Doom separates the original game data, called the IWAD, from add-on levels and resources, commonly called PWADs. The custom WAD does not replace the base game data. You must select a compatible IWAD first, then load the custom WAD with a compatible source port or supported graphical launcher.
Choose the matching IWAD
The base file must match the content the WAD was built for. The Freedoom manual distinguishes Phase 1 for original Doom content from Phase 2 for Doom II or Final Doom content. A WAD made for Doom II should therefore be started with a Doom II-compatible IWAD, not an unrelated base file. If the readme says “Doom,” “Doom II,” “Final Doom,” or names a particular port, follow that wording exactly.

The documented source-port pattern is:
-iwad <base-file> -file <custom-wad>
For example, the Freedoom manual shows:
my-favorite-port -iwad freedoom2.wad -file scythe.wad
Replace the executable, IWAD and WAD names with the files on your system. Run the command from the directory where the executable can find the IWAD, or provide paths as required by that port. The command loads the base game first and then adds the custom WAD.

Use a graphical launcher or drag-and-drop when supported
Some source ports provide a file picker, a mod list, or drag-and-drop support. If the port documents that you can drag a WAD onto its executable, that is a valid alternative to the command line. The same compatibility rules still apply: the port must support the WAD, and the correct IWAD must be selected.
Doom installation checklist
- Read the WAD’s readme and identify the required Doom edition and source port.
- Confirm that the required IWAD is installed and that its name or location is known to the port.
- Place the custom WAD somewhere you can identify, or use the port’s documented mod directory.
- Launch with the equivalent of
-iwad <base-file> -file <custom-wad>, or use the port’s documented browser or drag-and-drop method. - Start the map using the map name and command described by the author. Some WADs open directly; others contain several levels or require a gameplay mod.
A WAD can contain more than a single level. It may also replace textures, sounds, music, monsters, weapons or gameplay code. Those additions can impose stricter source-port requirements than a map-only release, so do not assume that a WAD labelled “map” changes only geometry.
How to run a Quake BSP map
Quake uses compiled BSP map files rather than Doom WADs. A documented classic layout places the BSP under the game’s id1/maps directory. From there, the map is started with the console command form +map MAPNAME.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Install the BSP in the classic layout
- Read the map’s instructions and identify whether it is for the base game or for a mod directory.
- Find the Quake installation directory and its
id1folder. - Create
id1/mapsif the package does not already contain it. - Copy the map’s
.bspfile into thatmapsfolder. Keep any additional files in the directories specified by the readme. - If the author specifies a mod directory, use that directory’s
mapsfolder instead ofid1/maps.
Launch the map
Start Quake with the map name, for example:
+map MAPNAME
MAPNAME is the map’s name as documented by the author; use the name without inventing a filename or extension. Depending on the engine, you can append the argument to the game shortcut or enter the command in the in-game console.

The id1/maps procedure and command are documented in a Linux HOWTO, so treat them as a classic layout rather than a guarantee for every operating system, re-release or modern engine. Your map’s readme and the engine’s own instructions take precedence. A map made for a total-conversion mod may not load from id1 at all, even when the BSP itself is valid.
How Source and GoldSrc custom packages are installed
Source and GoldSrc games commonly distribute custom content as an installer or an archive containing a prescribed folder tree. Steam Support’s guidance for these games emphasizes preserving that directory structure and reading the package readme. Unlike a standalone BSP, a package can include maps plus textures, models, sounds, scripts and configuration files.
Manual archive installation
- Close the game and read the package instructions.
- Check which Source or GoldSrc title and version the package targets.
- Open the archive and identify its top-level folders. Do not drag only the map file out if the archive includes a complete game or mod directory.
- Copy the folders into the game’s application directory exactly as the package and Steam instructions describe. Merge folders when prompted; do not rename them or flatten their contents.
- If the package includes an installer, verify its destination before accepting it. The installer should point to the target game or mod directory, not a generic desktop folder.
- Restart the game and use its map menu, console command or mod launcher as specified by the readme.
Maps supplied by a server
Some Source and GoldSrc servers automatically download required maps and resources when you connect. That convenience does not make every package interchangeable: a server may require a particular game, mod or asset set, and local downloads can still fail when directories or permissions are wrong. If a server cannot supply a file, install the package manually using its documented folder layout.
Why directory nesting matters
Suppose an archive contains game/maps/example.bsp. Copying the entire game folder into the application directory preserves the intended path. Copying only example.bsp into an arbitrary maps folder may leave the game unable to find associated materials or sounds. An extra nesting level, such as game/game/maps, causes the same symptom. Compare the final path with the tree shown in the readme.

Using the current DOOM + DOOM II in-game mod browser
The current DOOM + DOOM II release includes an in-game browser for community-created mods. This is a different workflow from manually loading a WAD through a source port: browse for a mod in the game, select it, and let the game install it through the interface. Mods install separately and require additional storage.
Use the browser when the mod is listed there and you want the supported, integrated installation path. Use a manual WAD procedure when the level author provides a WAD for a compatible source port or when the content is not available in the browser. The official release page describes Legacy of Rust as 16 maps across two episodes; that figure describes the included campaign content, not a limit or compatibility guarantee for community mods.
Quick comparison of the installation paths
| Game or route | Typical file or package | Base data or requirement | Where it goes | How it starts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Doom with a source port | Custom WAD (PWAD) | Matching IWAD; Freedoom Phase 1 is for original Doom content, Phase 2 for Doom II or Final Doom content | Any location supported by the port, using its documented file picker or command-line path | -iwad <base-file> -file <custom-wad>, or a documented drag-and-drop/GUI method |
| Quake classic layout | .bsp map |
Quake engine or compatible source port; a mod directory may be required | quake/id1/maps, unless the readme specifies a mod directory |
+map MAPNAME |
| Source or GoldSrc | Installer or archive with folders and assets | Matching game, version and any named mod or resource pack | The game’s application directory, preserving the package’s folder structure | Map menu, console or mod launcher; some servers download content automatically |
| Current DOOM + DOOM II browser | Community mod selected in-game | The current release and sufficient additional storage | Installed through the game’s community-mod browser | Select and launch through the in-game interface |
What to check when a custom level does not load
Work through these checks in order. Incorrect resource placement is identified by Steam Support as the most common reason custom maps fail to load.
1. Confirm the target game and base files
A Doom WAD will not become a Quake map merely because both games are old shooters. Verify the game edition, IWAD, mod directory and source port named by the author. For Doom, check that the IWAD matches the expected Doom, Doom II or Final Doom content. For Quake, check whether the map belongs in id1 or another mod directory.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
2. Check the final path, not just the archive
Open the destination and follow the complete path to the file. Look for an extra top-level folder created during extraction, a missing maps directory, or a file copied into the wrong game’s application directory. Source and GoldSrc packages must retain their folder hierarchy; Quake’s documented base path is id1/maps.
3. Check the filename and map command
Use the exact map name from the readme. In Quake, the console command is +map MAPNAME; a typo or an added extension can produce a “map not found” result. In Doom, verify that the custom WAD is the file passed to -file and that the port is reading the intended IWAD.
4. Look for missing assets
If the level starts with missing textures, sounds or models, the package may include additional resources that were not copied. Re-extract the complete archive while preserving folders. A map that changes gameplay may also need a particular mod or source port rather than the base game alone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems5. Recheck engine compatibility
Modern source ports can differ in renderer, scripting and feature support. If the author specifies an engine or version, use that environment first. A map that loads in one port is not evidence that every port supports it.
6. Remove conflicting versions
Two copies of a WAD, BSP or resource pack can make troubleshooting confusing. Temporarily move older or duplicate files out of the game directory, then retry with one known package. Keep backups outside the installation folder so you can restore them without creating another nested directory.
7. If the download came from a server
Reconnect only after confirming that the server and your client use the same game or mod. If automatic delivery fails, obtain the package from the server operator or its documented source and install it manually according to the supplied instructions.
A repeatable procedure for any classic FPS
- Identify: Write down the game, edition, file format, base data and required engine or mod.
- Obtain: Download the complete package from a reputable source; custom content is used at your own risk.
- Read: Open the readme before extraction and note the map name, destination, launch method and extra assets.
- Preserve: Keep every folder in the archive and avoid creating an extra nesting level.
- Install: Use the game-specific route: Doom IWAD plus WAD, Quake BSP under the appropriate
mapsdirectory, Source/GoldSrc package in the prescribed application tree, or the current DOOM + DOOM II browser. - Launch: Use the documented command, menu or browser rather than guessing a filename.
- Diagnose: If it fails, verify the base game, final path, map name, required assets and engine compatibility before downloading another copy.
Following those distinctions prevents the most damaging assumption: that every classic shooter accepts the same file in the same folder. The format, base data and engine determine the installation method.
