FINAL FANTASY XVI is currently marked Steam Deck Verified, and you can install it through the Deck’s regular Steam Library flow. Connect to the internet for first-time setup and make sure you have 170 GB of available storage; Steam lists an SSD requirement. You do not need to begin by changing Proton settings.
What to expect on Steam Deck
SteamDB’s compatibility record labels FINAL FANTASY XVI Verified and records a successful SteamOS compatibility test dated August 25, 2026. Valve defines Verified as: “The game works great on Steam Deck, right out of the box.” The rating is a compatibility status, not a guaranteed frame-rate target: the available listings do not give a Deck-specific performance figure.
The Steam store’s system requirements are for Windows PCs, not a Steam Deck benchmark. They list 16 GB RAM and an SSD, and the minimum and recommended specifications each call for 170 GB of storage. Their stated expectations of 30 FPS at 720p (minimum) and 60 FPS at 1080p (recommended) apply to those PC requirements, not to Deck performance. See the current Steam listing and system requirements.
Install the game
- Connect the Deck to Wi-Fi. The compatibility record says an active internet connection is required for first-time setup.
- Open Steam Library. Find FINAL FANTASY XVI in your library. If you do not own it, use the Steam Store on the Deck to add it to your library first.
- Choose Install. Select internal storage or a supported microSD card as the install location. Make sure the selected storage has at least 170 GB available, as specified by the Steam listing.
- Let the download and initial setup finish. Keep the Deck online while first-time setup completes.
- Launch from the Library. Start with SteamOS’s default compatibility setup; no specific Proton version or launch option is called for by the current compatibility record.
Choose internal storage or microSD
A microSD card is optional if the Deck’s internal storage has enough free space. Valve documents microSD support and says the Deck formats cards for use; its FAQ identifies the file system as ext4 with casefolding. Check a card’s capacity and compatibility before choosing it for an installation of this size. Valve’s Steam Deck technical specifications cover supported storage.

Do you need to change compatibility settings?
No manual change is required to start. The current compatibility record marks the game Verified and says it runs successfully on SteamOS; it does not instruct players to choose a Proton version or add launch options. Avoid treating community tweaks, plugins, or overrides as prerequisites.
If the game does not launch, first check that FINAL FANTASY XVI and SteamOS are updated, then review the compatibility details displayed in the Steam Library. Compatibility status and requirements may change, so the current Deck listing is the best place to check for updated guidance.

Internet and the demo
An internet connection is required for first-time setup. Valve’s general Deck FAQ says installed games can be played offline unless the game itself requires internet, but the available title-specific information does not establish whether every later FINAL FANTASY XVI session works offline. Steam says the free demo covers the opening story section, and that its save data can carry over to the full game. Progress in the demo’s Eikonic Challenge mode cannot be saved or transferred. Check the Steam page for demo details.
