Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFirst check the Humble purchase page: a game may come with a Steam key, a downloadable standalone build, or another title-specific entitlement. If it includes a Steam key, redeem it and install the game from your Steam library. If Humble offers a standalone build, install it in Desktop Mode and add its executable to Steam as a non-Steam game to launch it from Gaming Mode. Neither route guarantees that a particular game, launcher, or login flow will work on Steam Deck.
Choose the route that matches your Humble entitlement
Humble purchases do not all provide the same kind of access. Open the purchase in your Humble account and inspect its redemption or download options before changing any settings on the Deck. Do not assume that a Humble purchase includes a Steam key, a Linux build, or a DRM-free installer. The files and entitlements depend on the specific title.

| What the purchase offers | What to do | What appears in Steam |
|---|---|---|
| A redeemable Steam key | Redeem the key to the intended Steam account, then install the game from that account’s library. | A Steam library game, installed and launched through Steam. |
| A standalone installer or game build | Download and install the offered build in Desktop Mode, then add the installed executable to Steam as a non-Steam game. | A shortcut to the local installation; it is not a Steam purchase or Steam-managed install. |
| Neither of those, or unclear instructions | Follow the entitlement and installation instructions shown for that title, or consult its publisher’s support. | Depends on the title’s actual access method. |
The two routes solve different problems. A key puts the game in the Steam account’s library. A non-Steam shortcut simply gives Steam a way to launch an application that is already installed on the Deck. Valve distinguishes adding a shortcut from redeeming or owning a Steam game in its instructions for adding non-Steam games.

Prepare Desktop Mode
Use Desktop Mode when you need to visit Humble’s download page, run an installer, or locate an installed executable. Valve describes the Deck’s desktop as a PC-like environment for browsing, downloading, and installing applications. You do not need an external keyboard or mouse for every task: the trackpads and on-screen keyboard can handle much of the navigation.

- Use the right trackpad as the primary click and the left trackpad as the secondary click. Press Steam + X to bring up the on-screen keyboard while Steam is running.
- When finished, use the desktop shortcut to return to Gaming Mode.
Some desktop tasks can be awkward with the Deck’s controls, and Valve notes that a physical keyboard and mouse may be needed in some situations. A USB-C hub or dock is an optional convenience for connecting peripherals; it is not a prerequisite for these installation routes. See Valve’s Steam Deck Desktop FAQ for desktop controls and guidance.
Route A: redeem a Humble Steam key and install through Steam
Use this route only when the purchase page explicitly provides a Steam key. A Steam key is redeemed to a Steam account; it is not the same thing as adding a non-Steam shortcut.
- Confirm the entitlement. Sign in to Humble and open the relevant purchase or redemption page. Check that it offers a Steam key for the game. If the page offers only a download or another format, use that route instead.
- Redeem the key in Steam. Sign in to the Steam account where you want the game, then use Steam’s product activation option to enter the key. Check the account carefully before confirming; the key is being redeemed to that account.
- Find the game in the library. After a successful redemption, locate the title in the Steam library and install it through Steam. This is the normal library installation route, not the non-Steam game shortcut process.
- Check the Deck rating. Look at the game’s current Steam Deck compatibility information before relying on it. Valve’s categories are Verified, Playable, and Unsupported. A rating describes compatibility assessment, not a guarantee that every setup or future update will behave identically.
- Test the complete game flow. Launch the game and, where applicable, test its launcher, account login, anti-cheat requirements, and controls. A successful install alone does not establish that all of those parts work.
If a Steam library game needs a compatibility adjustment, open the game’s Properties > Compatibility and select a Steam Play compatibility tool such as Proton when appropriate. Valve’s Steam Deck software and troubleshooting guide explains compatibility troubleshooting and warns that forcing a compatibility tool can make Steam download the Windows version in a case where only the Linux version had been installed. Consider that before switching tools, particularly if the game already has a native Linux build.
Route B: install a standalone Humble download
Choose this route when the purchase page provides an installer or standalone game build rather than a Steam key. The exact download choices and install steps are title-specific. A publisher may offer different operating-system builds, and a Humble purchase does not by itself establish that a Linux version or DRM-free installer is available.
Rank #2
- Switch to Desktop Mode using Steam > Power > Switch to Desktop.
- Open the title’s Humble download page. Sign in to the Humble account that owns the purchase and inspect the available files. Choose an operating-system or build option that is actually listed for that game; do not select or expect a format the page does not offer.
- Download and install the build. Follow the publisher’s instructions for that specific download. For example, Klei’s instructions for its DRM-free client describe opening the Humble Store download page, selecting an operating system, downloading the standalone installer, and then installing and running it. That is an example for the publisher’s title, not a universal set of Humble installation steps. See Klei’s DRM-free client instructions.
- Add the installed application to Steam. Open the desktop Steam client and choose Add a Game > Add a Non-Steam Game. Select the installed application or executable. If it is not listed, use the file picker to locate the executable in the installation folder, then add it.
- Return to Gaming Mode and test the shortcut. The entry should appear in the Deck interface under the non-Steam tab. Launch it and check controls, display behavior, any launcher, and any required sign-in.
Valve says that adding a non-Steam game creates a shortcut in the Steam client; it does not enable Steam downloads for that game or make it proof of ownership for the Steam account. The shortcut also does not install the application for you. For updates, follow the original publisher or download source’s process, which varies by title.
What the two installation routes change—and what they do not
| Question | Steam key route | Standalone download route |
|---|---|---|
| What must the Humble page provide? | A redeemable Steam key for the title. | A usable installer or build for the title. |
| Where is the game installed from? | The Steam library, after redemption. | The Humble or publisher download and its installation process. |
| What does the Steam entry represent? | A game in the Steam account’s library. | A shortcut to a locally installed application. |
| How are files and updates handled? | Through Steam for the Steam library copy. | Through the original download source or publisher workflow; check the title’s own instructions. |
| What compatibility evidence should you check? | The game’s current Deck rating and its behavior on your setup. | The available build, operating system, launcher or DRM requirements, and the result of any Proton attempt. |
| How can you launch it in Gaming Mode? | Launch it from its Steam library entry. | Add the installed executable as a non-Steam game, then launch the shortcut. |
The distinction matters most when troubleshooting. If a standalone title fails, the shortcut may be working correctly while the underlying application, installer, or compatibility layer is not. If a key has been redeemed, troubleshoot the Steam library installation and the game itself rather than trying to add a second shortcut.
Check compatibility without assuming Proton is a guarantee
Proton is a compatibility layer that lets many Windows games run on Linux, but support depends on the particular title and its setup. A Proton result for one game does not establish that another Humble download will work. Launchers, DRM, login requirements, anti-cheat, controls, and game-specific configuration can all affect the outcome. Valve’s Steamworks overview of Steam hardware and Proton describes Proton; Valve’s troubleshooting guidance provides Deck-specific steps.
- For a Steam library game: check its current Verified, Playable, or Unsupported status. Verified is Valve’s strongest compatibility category; Playable indicates that some manual configuration may be needed; Unsupported means Valve does not currently consider the title playable on Deck. Ratings can change.
- For a non-Steam application: check whether the offered build supports Linux or whether it is a Windows executable that might be tried with Proton. Valve notes that support for non-Steam applications may be limited, so the Steam Deck rating system should not be treated as a verdict for every manually added executable.
- For any route: test the specific features you need. A game reaching its title screen does not prove that an external launcher, online login, anti-cheat, controller layout, or later level will work.
For a Steam library game, a Proton option is available in Properties > Compatibility. Use it as a troubleshooting choice when relevant, not as a blanket instruction to force every game to run through Proton. For unstable performance, Valve also recommends checking the game’s graphics settings. The available evidence does not establish universal fixes for Humble games whose publisher launcher, DRM, or sign-in flow blocks startup; consult that title’s publisher support guidance.

Troubleshoot common installation and launch problems
| What happens | What to check next |
|---|---|
| You cannot find a Steam key | Reopen the purchase’s Humble page and inspect its actual entitlement. Not every purchase supplies a key; if a standalone download is offered, use that title’s download instructions instead. |
| The downloaded file is not a Linux installer | Check which operating-system builds the page actually offers and read the publisher’s installation directions. Do not assume every title includes a Linux version. If the available game is Windows-only, a Proton attempt may be possible, but success varies. |
| The installed game does not appear in Gaming Mode | In Desktop Mode, confirm that you added the installed application or executable through the desktop Steam client’s Add a Game > Add a Non-Steam Game option. A downloaded installer is not necessarily the game executable to launch. |
| The shortcut appears but will not launch | Confirm that the application runs or is installed as the publisher expects. Check its specific launcher, login, DRM, and system requirements. For a Windows executable, consider the per-game compatibility options; a shortcut does not resolve an incompatible application on its own. |
| A Steam library game stops working after changing compatibility settings | Revisit Properties > Compatibility and review the selected tool. Forcing a tool can change which game build Steam downloads, including replacing a Linux build with a Windows version in the case Valve describes. |
| The system is unstable beyond one game | Install available SteamOS updates and restart the Deck, which Valve recommends as an initial troubleshooting step. Avoid unrelated system-level changes while diagnosing a game-specific issue. |
Keep Desktop Mode changes low-risk
For normal browsing and application installation, Valve points to the Discover Software Center, which installs applications using Flatpak on writable storage. Valve presents Flatpak as a way to avoid extra applications being broken by SteamOS updates. By contrast, software installed outside Flatpak, such as through pacman, may be wiped by a SteamOS update. A game’s publisher instructions may call for a particular installation method, but do not make system-level changes unless the documented process truly requires them and you understand the risk.
No special purchase or peripheral is required by the two routes above. A keyboard, mouse, or USB-C hub can make Desktop Mode easier to operate, but the Deck’s trackpads and on-screen keyboard are available for many tasks.
Before you start: a quick decision checklist
A short check up front can prevent installing the wrong file or troubleshooting the wrong Steam entry. Open the Humble purchase page and answer these questions in order:
- Is there a Steam key? If yes, decide which Steam account should receive it, redeem it there, and use the library copy. If no, do not try to create a Steam library install by adding a shortcut; inspect the other entitlement options.
- Is there a standalone download? Check the actual files and operating-system options listed for this particular title. An installer is not necessarily a native Linux game, and a purchase does not guarantee DRM-free access.
- What does the publisher say about installing and updating it? Use title-specific directions rather than assuming that another game’s Humble download process applies. Keep the publisher’s update route in mind, especially for a standalone copy that Steam will not update.
- What needs to work for you to play? Consider the game itself as well as any launcher, login, anti-cheat requirement, and controller behavior. Test those parts after installation rather than treating a successful download as a compatibility result.
If the Humble page is unclear about what the purchase includes, pause before installing anything and check the title’s publisher support. Humble entitlement formats and standalone installation steps vary by game, so there is no single workflow that applies to every item in a bundle.

What to expect after adding a standalone game
Adding a non-Steam shortcut is a useful bridge between Desktop Mode and Gaming Mode, but it does not change how the game was acquired or where its files live. The shortcut points Steam at an application already installed on the Deck. It does not turn the title into a Steam store purchase, place it in the Steam account’s owned library, or provide Steam-managed downloads and updates.
That distinction also helps identify which support path to follow. For a library game, start with Steam’s compatibility information and settings for that title. For a standalone build, start with the publisher’s instructions and the specific executable you added. If the shortcut opens but a launcher or login blocks progress, the existence of a Steam entry does not establish that the launcher is compatible; consult the publisher’s guidance for that game. Compatibility can depend on more than whether the main executable opens.
There is no single compatibility rating or measured success percentage that applies to Humble games as a group. Valve’s Verified, Playable, and Unsupported labels are useful for Steam library titles, but manually added applications need to be tested individually. Proton can be part of that test for a Windows build, not a promise that every game or DRM flow will work.

Do Humble Bundle games always come with a Steam key?
No. The entitlement depends on the specific purchase. Check its Humble page for a redeemable Steam key, standalone download, or other title-specific access method before choosing an installation route.
Best Value
- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.

- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Can I add a Humble game to Gaming Mode without a Steam key?
If the purchase offers a standalone build, install it first, then use the desktop Steam client’s Add a Game > Add a Non-Steam Game option to add the installed application or executable. This creates a shortcut; it does not redeem a key or install the game.
Will every Humble game run on Steam Deck with Proton?
No. Proton can run many Windows games on Linux, but compatibility varies with the game, launcher, DRM, login, anti-cheat, and configuration. Check a Steam library game’s current Deck rating and test the specific title.
Does a non-Steam shortcut get updates through Steam?
No. Valve describes the entry as a shortcut; it does not enable Steam downloads or updates for that game. Follow the original publisher or download source’s update process.

Do I need a keyboard, mouse, or dock to install a Humble game?
Not in every case. The Deck’s trackpads and on-screen keyboard handle many Desktop Mode tasks. Valve notes that some situations may require a physical keyboard and mouse; a USB-C hub or dock is optional convenience, not a general requirement.
What should I do if the game installs but a launcher or login will not work?
Check the publisher’s support guidance for that title. An installed game or working shortcut does not prove that its launcher, sign-in flow, anti-cheat, or DRM will work on Deck, and there is no universal fix for every Humble title.
The Bottom Line
Start with the entitlement shown on the Humble purchase page. Redeem a listed Steam key and install from the Steam library, or install an available standalone build in Desktop Mode and add its executable as a non-Steam shortcut. Check the individual game’s compatibility and test its launcher, login, and controls; a shortcut and Proton are not guarantees that every title will work.
