The safest practical deployment is a Mosquitto listener on TCP 8883 with TLS, allow_anonymous false, password-file authentication, and an ACL that limits every account to its own topic namespace. Install the broker and client utilities from your Debian or Ubuntu repository, bind an explicit listener, lock down the VPS firewall, then test both permitted and rejected operations before putting devices into production.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
What you are building
Mosquitto is an MQTT broker: clients publish messages to topics and subscribe to topics, while the broker handles connections and message distribution. A newly installed service is not automatically an Internet service. If Mosquitto starts without a listener declaration, it uses port 1883 on the loopback interface, so a remote device cannot reach it. The Mosquitto manual documents this listener behavior.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For an Internet-facing VPS, use one deliberately configured TLS listener. Keep unencrypted MQTT on 1883 disabled, or expose it only on a private network where you have an explicit reason to use it. Port numbers are conventions; encryption, authentication, authorization, and firewall policy are the security controls.
| Port | Typical use | Security implication |
|---|---|---|
| 1883/TCP | Plain MQTT, often inside a trusted private network | Credentials and messages are not protected by transport encryption; never expose it broadly to the Internet. |
| 8883/TCP | MQTT over TLS, a common Internet-facing convention | Protects the connection when certificates are correctly validated; still requires MQTT authentication and topic ACLs. |

Set the firewall policy before opening MQTT
Keep an existing SSH session open while changing firewall rules. Allow SSH only from your administration network, permit the selected MQTT port only from expected client ranges when possible, and deny unused inbound ports. For example, with UFW and an administration address of 203.0.113.10:
sudo ufw default deny incoming
sudo ufw default allow outgoing
sudo ufw allow from 203.0.113.10/32 to any port 22 proto tcp
sudo ufw allow 8883/tcp
sudo ufw enable
sudo ufw status verbose
Replace the example address with your real management network. If all devices are on a private range, restrict 8883 to that range instead of allowing every source. Only add 1883 from a private CIDR when you intentionally operate a plaintext internal listener.
Install the broker and client utilities
On Debian or Ubuntu, the packages are normally named mosquitto and mosquitto-clients. Confirm the names for the exact release before installing:
apt-cache policy mosquitto mosquitto-clients
sudo apt install mosquitto mosquitto-clients
The client package supplies mosquitto_pub and mosquitto_sub, which you will use to verify authentication, TLS, and ACL behavior from a real client network.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesInspect the installed service and configuration layout
Check the version, unit definition, and configuration directory rather than assuming paths from another distribution:
mosquitto -h | head
systemctl cat mosquitto
ls -la /etc/mosquitto
find /etc/mosquitto -maxdepth 2 -type f -print
Debian-family packages commonly keep the main file at /etc/mosquitto/mosquitto.conf and local snippets in /etc/mosquitto/conf.d/. Put your site-specific listener, authentication, and ACL settings in the supported include path so a package upgrade is less likely to overwrite them. Confirm that the main configuration actually includes that directory before relying on it.
Snap installation
A snap is an alternative when it fits your operational model. Snap deployments use /var/snap/mosquitto/common/ for configuration and related files and have snap-specific systemd service names. Follow the project’s snap documentation for the unit name and paths instead of copying Debian paths into a snap installation.

Configure an explicit, secure listener
Create a local configuration snippet such as /etc/mosquitto/conf.d/vps-secure.conf for a package installation. Adapt certificate and password paths to your host:

cafile /etc/ssl/certs/ca-certificates.crt
certfile /etc/mosquitto/certs/server.crt
keyfile /etc/mosquitto/certs/server.key
tls_version tlsv1.2
The listener, password_file, certificate, key, ACL, and TLS-version directives are documented in the Debian unstable and testing configuration references. per_listener_settings true makes authentication and authorization settings apply deliberately to each listener.
This example makes 8883 the externally reachable listener and disables anonymous connections on it. Do not add a second public 1883 listener merely because clients use that number by default. If a legacy internal client requires plaintext MQTT, define a separate listener, bind it to a private address, restrict it at the firewall, and understand that its traffic is not encrypted.
Decide whether you need one listener or more
A single TLS listener is easier to audit: every client uses the same encryption and authentication boundary. Multiple listeners can be useful when a private legacy network and Internet clients have different requirements, but each listener needs deliberate settings, firewall rules, and tests. With per_listener_settings true, do not assume a password file or ACL configured for one listener automatically protects another. Review the effective configuration after every additional listener.
The port number itself does not make MQTT secure. Moving plaintext MQTT to an unusual port does not encrypt it, and using 8883 without certificate validation does not provide a trustworthy connection. Choose the port that matches your network policy, then enforce TLS, credentials, topic permissions, and source restrictions around it.
Recommended Free Tools
Obtain and protect the TLS certificate
Use a hostname that matches the certificate
Obtain a certificate from a certificate authority for the broker hostname clients will use, including that hostname in the certificate’s subject or Subject Alternative Name. Store the public certificate and private key in a directory readable by the Mosquitto service account but not by ordinary users:
sudo install -d -o mosquitto -g mosquitto -m 750 /etc/mosquitto/certs
sudo chown mosquitto:mosquitto /etc/mosquitto/certs/server.key
sudo chmod 600 /etc/mosquitto/certs/server.key
sudo chmod 644 /etc/mosquitto/certs/server.crt
If your certificate provider supplies an intermediate chain, configure the complete chain in the form expected by your client libraries. Renew certificates before expiry and reload or restart Mosquitto after renewal according to the service’s supported procedure.
Select the TLS minimum version
The current Debian configuration documentation exposes TLS 1.2 and TLS 1.3 minimum-version choices. Set tls_version tlsv1.3 when every client supports TLS 1.3. Otherwise require at least TLS 1.2 with tls_version tlsv1.2 and plan client upgrades. A certificate file being present is not proof of a working deployment: verify a complete handshake from a client network using the broker hostname and CA validation.
Optional mutual TLS
Server-side TLS plus MQTT username and password is sufficient for many small deployments. If each client must authenticate with its own certificate, configure a trusted client CA and set require_certificate true on the TLS listener. That mode changes certificate issuance, revocation, and device replacement procedures, so use it only when you can operate that lifecycle reliably.

Mutual TLS does not remove the need to plan authorization. A certificate can identify a device, while the ACL still determines whether it may publish, subscribe, or access a particular namespace. Decide whether certificate identity, an MQTT username, or both are used in your operational model before issuing devices credentials.
Create users and enforce topic permissions
Build the password file safely
Mosquitto 2.0 and later require an explicit authentication choice. For an Internet-facing broker, choose authentication and pair it with topic access control. The official authentication guide states: “It is important to configure authentication on your Mosquitto instance, so unauthorised clients cannot connect.”
Create the first account interactively so the password is not exposed in shell history or process listings:
sudo mosquitto_passwd -c /etc/mosquitto/passwd device01
sudo chown mosquitto:mosquitto /etc/mosquitto/passwd
sudo chmod 640 /etc/mosquitto/passwd
The -c option creates or overwrites the file. Omit -c when adding or changing another account:
sudo mosquitto_passwd /etc/mosquitto/passwd device02
sudo mosquitto_passwd -D /etc/mosquitto/passwd device02
Keep the file readable by the Mosquitto service account. Never put a real password directly after -P in a production shell command; command history and process inspection can disclose it.
Write a least-privilege ACL
Authentication proves who connected; an ACL decides what that account may publish or subscribe to. Create /etc/mosquitto/acl with a separate namespace for each device:
user device01
topic readwrite devices/device01/#
user device02
topic readwrite devices/device02/#
With this example, device01 can publish and subscribe only below devices/device01/. Add explicit read-only or write-only rules when a device should not perform both operations. Avoid broad wildcards such as granting every authenticated user access to #; that defeats isolation and makes a stolen credential more damaging.
Check topic spelling and case carefully. MQTT topic names are application-defined, so an ACL for devices/device01/# does not automatically cover a similarly named path such as device/device01/#. Document which client publishes state, which client consumes commands, and which topics are intentionally shared before writing broad rules.

Start, reload, and monitor the service
After creating certificates, the password file, and the ACL, enable Mosquitto at boot and start it:
sudo systemctl enable --now mosquitto
sudo systemctl status mosquitto --no-pager
sudo journalctl -u mosquitto -b --no-pager
If the service fails, read the journal before changing settings. Common causes are a misspelled directive, a certificate path that does not exist, a private key that the service account cannot read, or a password/ACL file with incorrect ownership. Fix one issue at a time, then run:
sudo systemctl restart mosquitto
sudo systemctl status mosquitto --no-pager
sudo journalctl -u mosquitto -n 100 --no-pager
Package service names can vary, especially with snap installations. Use the unit shown by systemctl list-units --type=service | grep -i mosquitto when mosquitto.service is not present.
Verify the real security boundary
Run these tests from a client network, not only from the VPS itself. Replace the example hostname and CA path with the values used by your devices. The utilities and their documented usage are provided by the project’s Mosquitto documentation.
Confirm an authorized TLS publish and subscription
mosquitto_pub -h broker.example.com -p 8883 --cafile /path/ca.crt
-u device01 -P 'REDACTED' -t devices/device01/state -m online
mosquitto_sub -h broker.example.com -p 8883 --cafile /path/ca.crt
-u device01 -P 'REDACTED' -t devices/device01/state -v
The first command should publish to the account’s permitted topic, and the second should receive messages for that topic. Use a separate terminal or client to publish while the subscriber is waiting.
Exercise the deny cases
- Attempt a connection without
-uand-P; anonymous access should be rejected. - Repeat with an incorrect password; authentication should fail.
- Use a hostname or CA combination that does not validate; certificate verification should fail rather than silently accepting the connection.
- Authenticate as
device01and attempt to publish or subscribe belowdevices/device02/; the ACL should deny the operation. - Attempt a connection from an unapproved source network; the VPS firewall should block it.
These tests establish that the controls are active together. A successful login alone does not demonstrate that topic permissions or network restrictions are correct.
Troubleshoot the failures you are most likely to see
Remote clients receive a timeout
- Check that the configuration contains an explicit
listener 8883and that Mosquitto restarted successfully. - Confirm the VPS provider’s network firewall or security group also allows 8883; a host firewall rule cannot override a provider-level deny.
- Verify that the client is resolving the broker hostname to the VPS address and that the certificate covers that hostname.
- Check that UFW or another host firewall allows the client’s source range, not merely your own administration address.
The service will not start after enabling TLS
- Read
journalctl -u mosquittofor the exact file and line reported. - Check spelling and absolute paths for
certfile,keyfile, andcafile. - Use
namei -l /etc/mosquitto/certs/server.keyto inspect directory traversal permissions, then ensure the Mosquitto service account can read the key. - Confirm that the certificate and private key belong together and that the certificate chain is complete for the clients you operate.
Clients report “not authorized”
- Confirm the username exists in the password file and that the password was entered correctly.
- Check that
allow_anonymous falseis applied to the listener the client is using. - Review the ACL spelling, including case, topic prefixes, and whether the operation is publish or subscribe.
- With
per_listener_settings true, verify that the password and ACL directives are attached to the intended listener rather than another configuration scope.
1883 works locally but not remotely
This is expected when Mosquitto has no remote listener: the default 1883 socket is loopback-only. Do not solve it by exposing an unauthenticated plaintext port. Add the TLS listener, configure credentials and ACLs, then permit only the selected TLS port through the firewall.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Operate the broker safely after deployment
- Patch the VPS and Mosquitto package on a planned schedule, checking release-specific configuration changes before upgrades.
- Keep the private key and password file owned by the broker service account with restrictive modes; audit them after package or certificate changes.
- Renew certificates before expiry and verify a client handshake after every renewal.
- Review users and ACL entries when devices are retired, replaced, or reassigned.
- Monitor service logs for repeated authentication failures, unexpected source addresses, and restart loops.
- Keep SSH restricted to the administration network and remove unused inbound rules.
- Re-run both successful and rejected publish/subscribe tests after changing listeners, certificates, passwords, ACLs, or firewall rules.
Keep a record of the hostname on the certificate, the listener addresses and ports, the intended client ranges, and the owner of each credential. That inventory makes certificate renewal, device replacement, and incident response less error-prone. When a package upgrade changes a default or configuration path, compare the installed version’s man page with your local snippets instead of assuming the previous behavior remains unchanged.
The result is a broker that is reachable only where intended, encrypts Internet traffic, requires a named account, and limits each account to the topics it needs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why can’t a remote MQTT client connect after installation?
A default Mosquitto process without an explicit listener binds 1883 to loopback. Add a deliberate listener such as listener 8883, restart the service, allow that port in both the VPS provider firewall and the host firewall, and confirm the client source range is permitted.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Should I use port 1883 or 8883?
Use 8883 as the usual convention for MQTT over TLS when clients connect over an untrusted network. Port 1883 is plaintext and should be disabled or restricted to a private network when there is a specific operational reason to use it. The number alone does not provide security.
How do I disable anonymous MQTT access?
Set allow_anonymous false on the listener, configure a password_file, create users with mosquitto_passwd, and restart or reload Mosquitto. Then test a connection without credentials and confirm it is rejected.
Why do I need an ACL if users already have passwords?
A password identifies the client but does not limit its topics. An ACL can restrict each account to its own namespace, such as devices/device01/#, and can separately allow read-only, write-only, or read-write operations.
What does the -c option to mosquitto_passwd do?
It creates or overwrites the password file. Use it only when creating a new file; omit it when adding or changing a user. Use -D to remove a user. Enter passwords interactively rather than putting them on a command line.
Recommended Free Tools
Do I need mutual TLS client certificates?
Not necessarily. Server-side TLS combined with MQTT username and password is sufficient for many small deployments. Use require_certificate true and a trusted client CA when you can reliably manage certificate issuance, renewal, revocation, and device replacement.
What permissions should the certificate and password files have?
The Mosquitto service account must be able to read them. Keep the private key and password file out of world-readable locations, use restrictive ownership and modes, and inspect directory traversal permissions if the service reports a permission error.
How can I tell whether TLS is really working?
Connect from a client network with the broker hostname and the appropriate CA using mosquitto_pub or mosquitto_sub. The certificate must match the hostname and the complete chain must validate. A file existing on disk is not proof that a client handshake succeeds.
The Bottom Line
Install Mosquitto from the supported Debian or Ubuntu packages, expose only an intentional TLS listener, require credentials, enforce least-privilege ACLs, and restrict the firewall. Validate both successful and rejected connections from outside the VPS before treating the broker as production-ready.
