The safest Battle.net workflow is to identify the exact game and version, determine whether the files already exist, protect any settings stored locally, and only then install or update. If Battle.net shows Install for a game that is already on your drive, use Locate the game and select the existing folder instead of starting a second installation. For World of Warcraft, each version is a separate installation. For settings, treat server-held player data and local configuration as different things: Blizzard can provide player data on another computer, but some custom profiles cannot be restored after they are overwritten.
This guide follows Blizzard’s documented Battle.net, World of Warcraft, and Overwatch procedures, while calling out where instructions can differ by title, operating system, or game version.

Start with the game, version, and files you actually have
Most avoidable data loss happens before the download begins. Battle.net can install several versions of a title, and the app can display Install when the game files are already present but no longer associated with the current installation record. Make three checks first.
1. Select the exact title and version
Open the Battle.net desktop app, sign in, and select the game from the game bar. Check the version or mode shown in that game’s tab before choosing an action. World of Warcraft is the clearest example: its versions are separate installs, so choosing one does not make another version available. If you intend to play WoW Classic rather than the current WoW client, select that version before installing or locating files.

2. Decide whether this is a new install or an existing one
- New installation: You do not have a usable copy of the selected title and version on the computer. Choose Install and select a new, writable destination.
- Existing files: The game folder is on a drive, perhaps after moving it, reinstalling Windows, changing Battle.net files, or using another computer. Choose Locate the game rather than downloading into that folder again.
- Uncertain or incomplete files: Do not delete the folder immediately. First try locating it, then use the game’s repair function if Battle.net recognizes it but patching fails.
3. Protect settings before replacing files
Account progress is not the same as local preferences. A game may keep player data on Blizzard’s servers while storing controls, interface files, add-ons, or custom profiles in the installation or user-data folders. The official material does not establish one export method that works for every Battle.net game. Before deleting, replacing, or cleaning folders, follow the current support instructions for that specific title and copy or document any local data you are relying on.

Install a Battle.net game for the first time
Battle.net desktop app sequence
- Install and open the Battle.net desktop app.
- Sign in to the Blizzard account that owns or has access to the game.
- Select the intended game in the app’s game bar.
- Confirm the version, region, or mode shown for that title. For World of Warcraft, choose the desired version because each version installs separately.
- Click Install.
- Choose a destination folder that is writable by your operating-system account and does not already contain another installation of the game.
- Start the installation and leave the app open until the download and file verification finish.
Overwatch 2’s official installation flow follows this pattern: install the Battle.net app, sign in, select Overwatch 2, and choose Install. Other games can present different labels or options, so use the controls shown for the selected title rather than assuming every game has identical menus.
Choose a safe destination
Use a folder you can write to and a short, uncomplicated path. Blizzard’s installation troubleshooting guidance warns against selecting a directory where a game is already installed because existing game data may be lost. A new folder for a genuinely new installation avoids merging two copies and makes later troubleshooting clearer.

When Battle.net says “Install” even though the game is already installed
Do not click through to a folder that already contains the game as if it were empty. The recovery path is to make Battle.net identify the files that are already there.
Use Locate the game
- Open the game’s page in the Battle.net desktop app.
- Under the Install control, select Locate the game.
- Browse to the existing installation folder, not its parent folder and not a newly created empty folder.
- Confirm the selection.
- For World of Warcraft, Blizzard says the control should change to Play when the correct folder is selected.
This is an official World of Warcraft procedure and a useful Battle.net recovery path. The exact wording or availability can differ for another title or later app revision, so do not treat the WoW button layout as a guarantee for every game.

How to tell whether you selected the right folder
- The app recognizes the installation instead of starting a full download.
- The selected game and version match the files in that folder.
- The primary control changes from Install to Play, where that title supports the documented behavior.
- The app may scan or verify files before offering an update. Let that process finish before moving or renaming the folder.
If the folder contains a different game version, selecting it will not turn it into the version you intended. Return to the game tab, choose the correct version, and locate the matching folder.
Understand what is protected by your account and what is not
Server-held player data
Blizzard’s uninstall guidance says player data is saved on Blizzard’s servers and is available from another computer once the game client is installed. That statement concerns player data associated with the account. It does not prove that every local preference, add-on, interface layout, key binding, or custom configuration synchronizes to the cloud.
Local settings and custom profiles
Some settings live in game files or local profile data. They can be changed by a reset, a cleanup operation, a replacement folder, or an accidental overwrite even when your account and progress remain intact. Because Blizzard has not documented one universal settings-backup process for all Battle.net games, verify the specific title’s current support guidance before removing files.
Overwatch hero configurations: document them before changes
Blizzard’s Overwatch support article states that hero-specific personalized configuration profiles are saved in the game’s settings. If those profiles are overwritten, the support team cannot restore them. In Blizzard’s words: “Customer Support cannot restore these profiles.”

- Open each hero’s personalized settings or control profile.
- Take clear screenshots of every page that matters, including values that are not visible at the same time.
- For a complex setup, record a short video while moving through the screens so the order and context are clear.
- Store the captures somewhere outside the game folder, such as your normal image or video library.
- After the game is repaired or reinstalled, use the captures to recreate the profiles manually.
Screenshots and videos are a reconstruction aid, not a cloud backup. They preserve what the settings were at the time of capture and cannot automatically restore them inside the game.

Update an installed game without replacing its folder
- Open Battle.net and sign in to the account associated with the game.
- Select the exact game and version whose files are already installed.
- If the app shows Install, stop and use Locate the game first. Do not start a second installation in the same directory.
- If the app recognizes the game, choose the available update or let the app begin patching according to that title’s controls.
- Allow the patch and any file scan to finish. Avoid renaming, moving, or deleting the game folder while the app is working.
- Launch the game only after Battle.net reports that the update is complete.
An update changes the recognized installation in place. It should not require you to delete the folder as a routine step. If you deliberately move the files to another drive, use the app’s locate function after the move rather than pointing the installer at a directory that already contains data without confirming the title and version.
What to do when a patch fails
Use the least destructive checks first. Blizzard’s World of Warcraft technical troubleshooting sequence is a useful model for Battle.net patch failures, although individual titles can expose different repair controls.
Step 1: Restart the app and computer
Close Battle.net, reopen it, and retry the patch. If the problem persists, restart the computer before changing installation files. A restart can clear a stuck app process without affecting the game folder.
Step 2: Check the connection and security software
Confirm that the computer has a stable network connection. Review firewall, antivirus, and other security-software settings that could block Battle.net or the game updater. Do not disable protection permanently; use the security product’s current instructions for allowing the required Blizzard application if it has been blocked.

Step 3: Run the game’s repair tool
Use the repair or scan-and-repair control provided for the recognized game. This is intended for damaged or inconsistent game files and is safer than deleting the entire installation as a first response. Let the scan complete before trying the patch again.
Step 4: Continue with account or app-level fixes only if needed
Blizzard’s troubleshooting list places reinstalling the Battle.net app and account or permission checks later in the sequence. These steps can remove the app’s local records, so preserve any settings or notes you still need before proceeding. On Windows 10 or Windows 11, Blizzard also lists trying an updated or new Windows account for permission-related problems when earlier steps fail.
If Battle.net forgets where the game is installed
Deleting Battle.net support files can make the app forget installation locations. That does not necessarily mean the game data has been deleted.
- Open the game’s page and choose Locate this game or the equivalent locate option.
- Select the existing installation folder.
- If the app cannot discover it, run the game’s own launcher from the installation folder, where available, so Battle.net can rediscover the installation.
- Wait for the app to scan or verify the files before starting a patch.
Do not respond to a missing location by choosing Install into the same folder without first confirming whether the app offers a locate option. The objective is to restore the installation record, not to overwrite the data you already have.
Install-folder mistakes that can cost existing data
Blizzard warns that selecting a folder where a game is already installed may cause existing game data to be lost. This risk matters when you are trying to reconnect a moved installation or when a second version has a similar folder name.

Before selecting a destination, check:
- The folder is new and empty for a first installation.
- The folder is the correct existing game directory when using Locate the game.
- The selected title and version match the files in that directory.
- Your operating-system account has permission to read and write there.
- The path is reasonably short and does not depend on a removable drive that may change letters.
If you cannot establish those facts, cancel the install and inspect the folders first. A cautious pause is safer than allowing the installer to merge or replace data.
Reinstalling the app or game while keeping settings in view
Reinstalling Battle.net is different from reinstalling a game. The app can lose its record of where games are installed, while the game folders may remain on the drive. After reinstalling the app, use Locate the game to reconnect each existing title rather than immediately downloading another copy.
Reinstalling a game is more disruptive because it can remove or replace local configuration files. Before doing so, document settings that matter, follow the title’s current support instructions for add-ons or interface data, and confirm whether the game stores the relevant information server-side. Blizzard’s statement about server-held player data should not be read as a promise that local settings will return automatically.

Checklist before you confirm an install, update, or cleanup
- Have you selected the intended game and, for World of Warcraft, the intended version?
- Are the files genuinely absent, or does Battle.net simply need to locate them?
- If files already exist, are you using Locate the game rather than Install?
- Have you documented local settings that the title may not synchronize?
- Is the destination new for a first install, or exactly the existing folder for a locate operation?
- Does your operating-system account have permission to use the destination?
- If patching failed, have you tried restart, network/security checks, and repair before deleting files?
- If Battle.net forgot the location, have you tried locating the game or launching it directly?
Key limitations to keep in mind
Battle.net’s controls and Blizzard’s support steps can change by game, operating system, version, and app revision. The documented World of Warcraft behavior that a successful locate operation changes Install to Play should be treated as a WoW-specific reference, not a universal promise for every title. Likewise, the Overwatch profile warning is a concrete example of local configuration risk, not proof that every game stores settings in the same place.
The reliable principle is to match the action to the state of your files: install only when the selected game/version is absent, locate when the files are already present, repair when recognized files are damaged, and preserve local settings before any operation that can overwrite them.
