How to Install and Use ClickHouse on a Linux VPS

Yes, ClickHouse runs well on a Linux VPS when the server has persistent SSD storage, enough memory, and controlled network access. Use the official DEB repository on Debian or Ubuntu, the RPM repository on RHEL-family distributions, or a TGZ/single-binary installation when packages do not fit your operating system. Docker is also suitable, but only if you configure volumes, ports, and the file-descriptor limit deliberately.

Match the installation format to the VPS distribution and to how you intend to operate the database.

The official repository currently lists stable 26.9.18.11 and LTS 26.8.26.12, both released on 2026-10-13. Those values are time-sensitive: check the repository immediately before installation or an upgrade rather than assuming they remain current.

Official Linux x86_64 DEB, RPM and TGZ builds are supported for self-managed installations when used according to the Install Reference Guide. If your VPS uses another CPU architecture, verify package availability for that architecture before committing to a production design.

Prepare the VPS

Use a current 64-bit Linux image, connect with an administrative account that can use sudo, and provision persistent SSD-backed storage. ClickHouse is a server database: data must survive a process restart and a VPS reboot. A temporary exploration command such as clickhouse-local does not provide that durable service.

• Reserve disk capacity for the raw data, MergeTree parts, temporary files, backups and growth. Monitor free space continuously.
• Allocate memory appropriate to the query workload. Large aggregations, merges and concurrent queries can consume substantially more memory than a smoke test.
• Use a firewall or cloud security group. Keep database ports private while you install and configure authentication.
• Record the VPS distribution and architecture with cat /etc/os-release and uname -m before selecting packages.

Do not promise a fixed query speed based on VPS size. Throughput depends on schema, partitioning, storage, compression, query shape and concurrency; benchmark your own workload.

Install on Debian or Ubuntu with the official DEB repository

The repository page is the authority for current package channels and syntax. The following sequence adds the signing key, creates a signed APT source, installs the server and client, and starts the service.

1. Install repository prerequisites:

   sudo apt-get update
   sudo apt-get install -y apt-transport-https ca-certificates curl gnupg

Enable startup with your distribution’s systemd tooling so a reboot does not leave the database offline:

sudo systemctl enable clickhouse-server

Inspect the unit before allowing remote traffic:

sudo systemctl status clickhouse-server --no-pager
sudo journalctl -u clickhouse-server -n 100 --no-pager

If APT reports a signature, architecture or repository error, stop and correct that error rather than downloading an unrelated package. Re-check the official repository channel and the architecture value.

Install on RHEL-family systems with RPM

For RHEL, CentOS, Fedora, Amazon Linux and similar systems, add the official RPM repository, install the server and client, then enable and start the service. Use dnf instead of yum where that is the distribution’s supported command.

1. Install the repository helper:

   sudo yum install -y yum-utils

2. Add the ClickHouse repository:

   sudo yum-config-manager --add-repo https://packages.clickhouse.com/rpm/clickhouse.repo

3. Install the packages:

   sudo yum install -y clickhouse-server clickhouse-client

4. Enable and start the service:

   sudo systemctl enable clickhouse-server
   sudo systemctl start clickhouse-server

5. Check status and recent logs:

   sudo systemctl status clickhouse-server --no-pager
   sudo journalctl -u clickhouse-server -n 100 --no-pager

Confirm the repository’s current stable or LTS channel before a production rollout. Package versions and repository metadata change independently of your VPS image.

Use TGZ archives or a single binary when packages are unsuitable

The official repository provides TGZ archives for distributions that cannot use the DEB or RPM paths. A TGZ deployment gives you control over placement but also makes service integration, ownership, upgrades and rollback your responsibility. Create a dedicated service account, persistent data and log directories, and a systemd unit that starts clickhouse-server after the filesystem is available.

The OSS quick start also supports:

curl https://clickhouse.com/ | sh

That command obtains a single clickhouse binary in the current directory. It is useful for experiments and for running clickhouse-local; local mode keeps table data temporarily rather than providing the durable server required on a VPS. Run clickhouse-server with persistent directories when the data must survive process exit.

Verify the service locally before exposing it

Make the first connection on the VPS itself. This separates installation problems from firewall, DNS and authentication problems.

1. Open the native client:

   clickhouse-client

2. Check the running version:

   SELECT version();

3. Create a database and a durable MergeTree table:

   CREATE DATABASE IF NOT EXISTS analytics;
   
   CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS analytics.events
   (
       event_time DateTime,
       user_id UInt64,
       event_type LowCardinality(String),

4. Insert two rows:

5. Run an aggregate query:

   SELECT event_type, count(), sum(value)
   FROM analytics.events
   GROUP BY event_type
   ORDER BY event_type;

The result should contain one row for purchase with a sum of 49.99 and one row for signup with a sum of 1. This verifies that the server accepts SQL, writes data and reads it back from durable storage.

Understand ClickHouse’s network ports

HTTP is useful when an application already speaks HTTP or needs a simple SQL-over-HTTP interface. The native protocol is the usual choice for ClickHouse-native client libraries. They are different firewall surfaces: open only the protocol your application needs, and restrict source addresses at the VPS firewall and any cloud security group.

Keep the first deployment bound to localhost. If a remote application must connect, configure a named user and firewall rules first, then bind or publish the required interface. Do not treat an open port as authentication.

Secure ClickHouse before remote use

Create a named, least-privilege account

Do not publish the default account. Create a named user with a strong, unique secret and only the database and privileges the application needs. Store the credential in a secret manager or protected application configuration, not in shell history, source control or a public deployment file.

Restrict the network

• Allow 8123 and/or 9000 only from the application servers, VPN or administration addresses that require them.
• Keep administrative access on SSH or a private network rather than exposing database ports to the whole internet.
• Check both the VPS firewall and the provider’s security-group rules; either layer can block or expose traffic.
• After changing bind addresses or users, restart or reload using the service’s supported configuration procedure and verify locally again.

Protect data and logs

• Persist /var/lib/clickhouse, which contains the database data.
• Persist logs separately so diagnosis remains possible when a data volume fills.
• Back up important data and perform a restore test on another environment before relying on the VPS as the only copy.
• Monitor disk free space, memory, CPU, merge activity and query latency. A successful installation can still fail later when merges or temporary files exhaust resources.

Stage upgrades and test restart behavior

Pin or stage package upgrades rather than applying repository changes blindly to a production workload. Before upgrading, confirm the target channel, take a tested backup, review release compatibility and verify that the service starts cleanly after a reboot. Test both restart behavior and restore procedures while the data is still non-critical.

Run ClickHouse with Docker

Docker is practical when your team already manages container lifecycle, images and volumes. The official clickhouse/clickhouse-server image uses /var/lib/clickhouse for data and /var/log/clickhouse-server for logs. The following launch keeps both protocols on localhost and sets the high file-descriptor limit recommended for the image:

The bind mounts make the data and logs survive container replacement. Back up those host directories according to your storage and consistency plan. Binding to 0.0.0.0 is appropriate only after a firewall and authenticated users are in place; localhost binding is the safer starting point.

Initialize a Docker user and database

The image supports CLICKHOUSE_DB, CLICKHOUSE_USER, CLICKHOUSE_DEFAULT_ACCESS_MANAGEMENT=1 and CLICKHOUSE_PASSWORD for initial setup. Supply the password through a protected mechanism and avoid putting a long-lived secret in a shared shell history. The image documentation notes that the default user has network access disabled when none of those setup credentials or related access-management options are supplied. That default behavior is not a substitute for creating an explicit least-privilege account.

Check the container

docker ps
docker logs --tail 100 clickhouse-server
docker exec -it clickhouse-server clickhouse-client

Run the same SELECT version(), database, table, insert and aggregation checks inside the container. If the container restarts without data, inspect the host mount path and ownership before creating new tables.

Choose native packages, TGZ or Docker

Native packages are usually the shortest path on Debian, Ubuntu and RPM-family VPS images because service files, ownership and upgrades follow familiar operating-system conventions. TGZ is useful when repository compatibility is the blocker, but plan the missing integration yourself. Docker offers isolation and repeatable image deployment, while making volume ownership, image upgrades, container restart policy and host-level monitoring part of your operating procedure.

Troubleshoot the first failures

The service will not start

Read the unit status and recent journal entries first:

sudo systemctl status clickhouse-server --no-pager
sudo journalctl -u clickhouse-server -n 100 --no-pager

Look for invalid configuration, a full filesystem, an occupied port or incorrect ownership on the data and log directories. Fix the reported cause, then restart and check the journal again.

clickhouse-client returns a connection error

• Confirm that clickhouse-server is running.
• Check whether the client is connecting to localhost or a remote address and whether that address is configured to listen.
• For remote connections, verify the VPS firewall, cloud security group, port number, username and password separately.
• Test locally before changing public firewall rules; a local failure is not a network problem.

Docker data disappears after recreation

Confirm that /var/lib/clickhouse is mounted to a persistent host directory and that the container can read and write it. A container writable layer is not a backup and is lost when the container is removed.

Queries become slow or inserts fail later

Check free disk space, memory pressure, CPU saturation, merge activity and query latency. ClickHouse may need temporary space during merges and large queries. Increase capacity or reduce workload only after identifying which resource is exhausted, and benchmark the actual schema rather than relying on a generic performance multiplier.

Operational checklist

• Install from the repository or archive appropriate to the VPS distribution and architecture.
• Enable the service or a container restart policy and verify behavior after reboot.
• Run SELECT version() and a create/insert/SELECT smoke test.
• Keep 8123 and 9000 private until users, credentials and firewall rules are configured.
• Use a named least-privilege account with a strong secret.
• Persist /var/lib/clickhouse and logs, and test backups by restoring them.
• Monitor disk, memory, CPU, merges and query latency.
• Stage upgrades and re-check the official release channel before changing production packages or images.

Bottom line

For most Debian or Ubuntu VPS deployments, install the official DEB packages, enable the systemd service, verify locally, and keep the database ports private while you configure authentication and firewall rules. Use the RPM path on RHEL-family systems, TGZ when repository packages do not fit, and Docker when persistent volumes and container operations are already part of your workflow. The durable installation is the one with persistent data, tested backups, restricted network access and a restart procedure you have actually verified.
