What GNU Screen does on a VPS
GNU Screen is a terminal multiplexer: it creates virtual terminal windows inside one local terminal or SSH connection. A Screen session continues to exist independently of the terminal that displayed it, so a shell, deployment, backup, worker, or other foreground process can keep running when you close your laptop, lose network connectivity, or end the SSH connection.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Screen is especially useful on an Ubuntu VPS because SSH is only the connection to the server, not the process supervisor for everything you start. Without a multiplexer, closing the SSH terminal can send a hangup to the shell and its child processes. With Screen, you deliberately detach the session and leave it running, then attach to the same virtual terminal later. GNU describes moving a session between terminals by detaching and reattaching as one of Screen’s most useful features.
Screen is not a replacement for a service manager. A process that must start at boot, restart after failure, or run under tightly controlled privileges should generally be configured as a service. Screen is best for interactive administration and commands for which you want to return to the live terminal.

Before you install
- An Ubuntu VPS that you can reach over SSH.
- A user account with
sudoprivileges, or the root account. - A stable enough connection to complete package installation.
- The same Linux account later when you list or reattach its sessions.
Screen sessions belong to the user who created them. A session created by root is separate from one created by an ordinary account, and an ordinary account cannot automatically list or attach to root’s session.
Install Screen from Ubuntu’s package repository
- Open an SSH connection to the VPS.
- Refresh the local package index:
sudo apt update - Install the package:
sudo apt install screenWhen prompted, confirm the installation. Ubuntu provides the
screenpackage in its repositories.Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. - Verify that the executable is available:
screen --version
Package versions depend on the Ubuntu release and enabled repositories. For example, the Ubuntu Jammy manpage identifies screen as version 4.9.0-1ubuntu0.1 for that release; do not assume that version on another Ubuntu release.
If the command is still unavailable
If the shell prints screen: command not found, make sure sudo apt install screen completed without an error. Check the package state with:
dpkg -s screen
If installation just completed in an unusual shell environment, start a new SSH session or refresh the shell’s command lookup. Then run screen --version again.
Create your first named session
Use a name that identifies the task rather than relying on an automatically assigned identifier:

screen -S app
Your terminal will clear or redraw and you will be inside a new Screen window. The shell prompt may look almost identical to a normal SSH shell; the important difference is that it is now inside a persistent session.
Run the long-lived command
Start the command normally. For example:
./start-worker.sh
Keep the command in the foreground if you want to watch its output. Screen preserves the virtual terminal, including the command’s live output and scrollback, while you are detached.
Detach without stopping the command
Press Ctrl-A, release both keys, and then press d. Do not hold all three keys at once. Screen reports a detach message and returns you to the original SSH shell. The worker remains in the Screen session.

Reconnect after SSH closes or drops
Log in to the VPS again with the same Linux user, then list that user’s sessions:
screen -ls
The output includes session identifiers and names, for example an entry such as 12345.app. Reattach by the name you chose:
screen -r app
You can also use the numeric identifier shown by screen -ls:
screen -r 12345
Once attached, you see the command’s current terminal and can interact with it as if the SSH connection had never been interrupted.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →When Screen says the session is attached elsewhere
If another terminal is still attached, ordinary reattachment may fail with a message saying that the session is attached elsewhere. Move it deliberately with:
screen -d -r app
-d detaches the session from the other terminal and -r reattaches it to your current one. Use this only when you intend to take control away from the other terminal; it can interrupt someone who is actively typing or watching the same session.
If no session appears
First confirm the account and host. You may have logged in as a different user, connected to a different VPS, or used a different SSH identity. A root session does not appear in an ordinary user’s screen -ls output.
If the correct user and host are confirmed but Screen reports no sessions, the shell or command inside the session may have exited. Screen does not keep an empty session alive after its last shell terminates. Inspect the application’s own logs, determine why the command ended, and create a new session.

Use multiple Screen windows
One Screen session can contain several full-screen virtual windows. Each window has its own shell or command, allowing you to administer a service, inspect logs, and run diagnostics without opening multiple SSH connections.
| Keys | Action |
|---|---|
Ctrl-A c |
Create a new window. |
Ctrl-A n |
Move to the next window. |
Ctrl-A p |
Move to the previous window. |
Ctrl-A 0 through Ctrl-A 9 |
Jump directly to a numbered window. |
Ctrl-A k |
Kill the current window after confirmation. |
Ctrl-A d |
Detach the entire Screen session. |
Ctrl-A ? |
Display Screen’s key-help page. |
Every command uses Screen’s Ctrl-A prefix by default. Press the prefix, release it, then press the command key. If you press only Ctrl-A, Screen waits briefly for the next key; it does not send that keystroke directly to the program.
A practical window layout
For an interactive deployment, keep the main process in window zero, open a second window for journalctl or application logs, and use a third for one-off checks such as disk space or network status. Name the overall session for the project, and record the window purpose in your own runbook because the default window titles may only show the running shell or command.
Start a detached command from the beginning
You do not have to attach interactively before launching a command. The following starts a named session in detached mode and runs a command inside it:
screen -dmS backup sh -c 'rsync -a /srv/data /srv/backup'
-d -m starts Screen detached, and -S backup gives the session a predictable name. The command is passed to sh -c so the entire quoted command line runs as the session’s shell command.
Check that it exists:
screen -ls
Attach when you need to see its terminal:
screen -r backup
If the command completes, its shell can exit and the Screen session disappears. For recurring or mission-critical backups, use a scheduler or service manager as appropriate and retain Screen for interactive observation or troubleshooting.
Quoting and environment cautions
The command inside sh -c is interpreted by the shell. Quote paths containing spaces correctly, avoid embedding passwords in command lines, and make sure the session user can read the source and write the destination. A detached session does not bypass filesystem permissions, environment variables, network credentials, or resource limits.
Capture output with Screen logging
Screen can automatically log terminal output. Start a logging session with:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →screen -L -S backup
-L enables output logging and -S backup assigns the session name. Logging is useful when a command produces important progress or diagnostic output that you need to review after detaching.

Treat Screen logs as operational data:
- Choose a directory that the session user can write to.
- Check where your Screen configuration places the log before depending on it for incident records.
- Do not run commands that print passwords, access tokens, private keys, or other secrets into the terminal.
- Rotate, archive, or remove logs so an unattended job cannot fill the VPS disk.
- Restrict log permissions when output contains customer data or internal paths.
Logging captures terminal output; it is not a structured application log and does not replace the application’s own logging, retention, and monitoring configuration.
Share a session intentionally
Screen supports multi-display mode. The command:
screen -x app
attaches to a session that is already attached elsewhere, allowing both terminals to see and interact with the same virtual screen. This can be useful for a deliberate handoff, pair troubleshooting, or supervised maintenance.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Sharing is governed by Unix ownership and permissions. The users must have appropriate access to the session; -x is not a privilege-escalation mechanism and does not bypass account boundaries. Because both attached terminals can type commands, use it only with people you trust and announce who has control before running destructive operations.
Difference between -x and -d -r
screen -x leaves the existing attachment in place and adds another display. screen -d -r removes the other attachment and transfers the session to your terminal. Choose the first for collaboration and the second for a deliberate takeover.
Recover from common problems
“screen: command not found”
Install the package with sudo apt update and sudo apt install screen. If the package is installed, start a new shell or SSH connection and verify with screen --version.
screen -ls shows nothing
Use the same VPS and Linux account that created the session. Check whether you originally used sudo screen or logged in as root. If the command ended, there is no live session to list; inspect the command’s logs and launch it again.
“There is no screen to be resumed”
The named or numeric session no longer exists, usually because its shell or command exited. Confirm the exact name from screen -ls, then investigate the process’s exit status and application logs before creating a replacement session.
The session is marked attached
Use screen -d -r <name-or-id> only if you intend to disconnect the other terminal. Otherwise, return to that terminal and detach normally with Ctrl-A d.
The terminal display is garbled or the size is wrong
Resize the local terminal and redraw the display. If you reconnect from a terminal with different dimensions, adapt the session to the current window:

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
screen -A -r app
The -A option tells Screen to adapt the session’s window size when reattaching. Terminal-emulation differences, an interrupted redraw, or an application that does not handle resize signals can still require restarting the affected full-screen program.
A session will not disappear
Reattach to the session, exit the command or shell normally, and verify with:
screen -ls
If a dead session remains listed, inspect the entry before cleaning it. Then remove stale dead entries with:
screen -wipe
Use screen -wipe only after checking that the listed sessions are genuinely dead; do not use cleanup commands as a substitute for finding a still-running process.
A reliable Ubuntu VPS workflow
- Connect to the intended VPS and confirm the account with
whoami. - Install and verify Screen once with
sudo apt install screenandscreen --version. - Create a descriptive session, such as
screen -S deployorscreen -S worker. - Run the command and watch its initial output for configuration, permission, or port errors.
- Detach with
Ctrl-A dinstead of closing the terminal while the command is still active. - When returning, run
screen -lsand reattach withscreen -r <name>. - If the command has finished, inspect its logs and exit result rather than assuming that the Screen session itself indicates success.
- When work is complete, stop the command cleanly, exit the shell, and confirm that the session no longer appears.
This workflow separates three states that are often confused: the SSH connection, the Screen session, and the program running inside it. SSH can fail while Screen survives; Screen can survive while its program exits; and a listed session does not prove that the program is healthy. Check each layer independently.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhen Screen is the right tool
Choose Screen when you need an interactive terminal that survives disconnection, multiple virtual windows in one SSH login, a simple detached invocation, or optional capture of terminal output. Its controls are compact and available through Ubuntu’s standard package repositories.
Use a service manager or another purpose-built supervisor when the requirement is automatic startup, restart-on-failure, dependency ordering, health checks, privilege separation, or machine-readable logs. A Screen session is tied to a user and terminal workflow; it does not provide those service-management guarantees.
For routine VPS administration, named sessions, explicit detaching, and a documented reattachment command are enough to prevent most accidental interruptions. The essential sequence is:
Quick Recap
screen -S task
# run the command
# press Ctrl-A, then d
screen -r task
