GNU Screen lets an interactive command keep running inside a persistent terminal session after your SSH connection closes. On a VPS, the dependable workflow is: install the package for your distribution, create a named session with screen -S name, run your command, press Ctrl-a then d to detach, and later reconnect with screen -r name.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
screen -S deploy
# run your long-lived command here
# press Ctrl-a, then d
screen -ls
screen -r deploy
The sections below cover installation on Debian-family and Red Hat-family systems, window management, logging, recovery when several sessions exist, and the security implications of sharing a session.

Screen is a full-screen terminal multiplexer. It creates one or more virtual terminals inside an SSH connection, so you can run separate shells or long-lived commands without opening a separate SSH connection for every task. Its key feature is that a session can be detached from the current terminal and reattached later. The command continues running while you are logged out of SSH.
This is useful for operations such as a game-server maintenance script, a large build, a database migration, or a deployment that may outlast your laptop’s network connection. A normal shell is tied to the terminal that started it; a detached Screen session preserves that terminal context until you intentionally exit the command or close the session. Screen also supplies scrollback, copy and paste, window switching, optional logging, and controls for sharing a session with another account.

Detaching protects against an SSH disconnect, not against every possible failure. If the VPS itself is stopped or rebooted, the running process and its Screen session are not automatically available just because Screen was installed. Treat Screen as an interactive session manager, not as a replacement for a service supervisor.
Check the VPS before installing
You need an account that can install packages (normally through sudo), an SSH connection to the server, and a distribution whose repositories contain Screen. Identify the operating system before choosing a command:
Recommended Free Tools
cat /etc/os-release
Package names are normally simply screen, but repository policy differs by release. The exact Screen version therefore depends on the VPS image and enabled repositories; confirm it after installation instead of assuming a particular version.
Install Screen by Linux distribution
Ubuntu and Debian
Use APT, the standard command-line package tool for Debian packages:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install screen
Accept the package prompt, then verify that the executable is on your path:
screen --version
If APT reports that no installation candidate exists, check the release name, repository configuration, and network access to the package mirrors. Do not download an unrelated binary merely to bypass a repository problem; fixing the repository keeps Screen integrated with security updates and dependency management.
RHEL 7, CentOS and Fedora-family systems
On RHEL 7 and compatible systems where the package is available through an enabled repository, install it with the system package manager:
sudo yum install screen
screen --version
CentOS and Fedora-derived releases may use dnf rather than yum; use the package manager supplied by that release and confirm that the appropriate repository is enabled. The command syntax inside Screen is the same once the package is installed.

RHEL 8 and later availability
Red Hat states that Screen was deprecated in RHEL 7.6 and omitted from RHEL 8, where tmux is the maintained alternative. If your RHEL 8 system does not provide a supported Screen package, this is a package-availability issue rather than a failed Screen command. Follow your organization’s repository policy: use the supported alternative, or use a community-supported package such as one supplied through EPEL only when that repository is approved for the server. Verify the exact minor release and enabled repositories before installing anything.
Building from source
A source build is possible when your distribution cannot provide a suitable package. The generic GNU sequence is:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute./configure
make
You will also need to install the compiler and development libraries required by the target release, then arrange an installation path and future update process. On a VPS, a distribution package is preferable whenever it is available because it receives normal dependency handling and administrative updates. A source build should be reserved for a specific compatibility requirement and documented so another administrator can reproduce it.
Start a named Screen session and run a command
Names make a busy VPS much easier to manage than sessions identified only by process IDs. Create a session before launching the work:
screen -S deploy
The terminal will appear almost unchanged, but you are now inside a Screen session. Start the command you need at that prompt. For example, run your deployment, migration, compiler, or game-server maintenance command there. Screen does not alter the command’s own options; it simply provides the terminal in which it runs.
When the command is active, detach without stopping it:
- Hold Ctrl and press a.
- Release both keys, then press d.
You should return to the original shell and see a message indicating that the session was detached. Screen’s autodetach behavior is enabled by default, so an SSH hangup can also leave a session available for later reattachment, although an intentional detach is clearer and easier to verify.
Reconnect after an SSH disconnect
Log back into the VPS and list the sessions owned by your account:

screen -ls
The listing includes an identifier and the name you supplied. Reattach by name:
screen -r deploy
You can also use the complete identifier printed by screen -ls, for example:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
screen -r 12345.deploy
If the session is still attached to another terminal, ordinary screen -r may refuse to attach. First inspect the listing so you know which session you are taking over, then use the deliberate detach-and-reattach form:
screen -d -r deploy
The -d option detaches the session from its current terminal and -r reattaches it to the terminal you are using. Do not use this combination blindly when another administrator may be working in that session; you could interrupt their view of a privileged shell or command.
Use multiple windows inside one session
Screen’s command prefix is Ctrl-a. The second key selects an operation. These controls are enough for most VPS work:
| Keys | Action | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Ctrl-a c | Create a new window | Open another shell without leaving the session. |
| Ctrl-a n | Next window | Move forward through the window list. |
| Ctrl-a p | Previous window | Move backward through the list. |
| Ctrl-a “ | Show the window list | Choose a window by name or number when several are open. |
| Ctrl-a 0 through Ctrl-a 9 | Select a numbered window | Jump directly to a known window number. |
| Ctrl-a d | Detach | Leave all windows running and return to the outer SSH shell. |
| Ctrl-a k | Kill the current window | Close a shell or command after confirming; do not use it as a shortcut for detaching. |
A practical layout is to keep the long-running task in one window, an administrative shell in a second, and a monitoring command in a third. Name sessions for the overall job and use the window list to avoid sending a command to the wrong shell.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scrollback, copy and paste, and terminal size
Screen maintains scrollback for each virtual terminal. Enter its copy/scrollback mode with Ctrl-a [, move through the output with the keyboard, and use the Screen selection controls to copy text. Press Esc to leave that mode. The exact movement keys can vary with terminal settings, so test them in a noncritical session before relying on them during an incident.
Screen emulates a terminal and adapts to the size reported by your SSH client. If a reattached session looks truncated or wraps at the wrong width, resize the local terminal, reconnect if necessary, and attach again. Behavior depends on the terminal emulator and the $TERM value; do not assume that one resize fix works identically in every client.

Capture output with Screen logging
For work whose output must be retained, start the session with automatic logging:
screen -L -S build
You can request an explicit log filename where supported:
screen -Logfile build.log -S build
Logging records terminal output, which may include passwords accidentally echoed by a script, access tokens, customer information, internal paths, or command arguments. Choose a directory with restrictive permissions, review who can read the file, and rotate or delete logs according to your retention policy. A log is not a substitute for checking the live process: a command can stop while the file remains present.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot common Screen problems
“There are several suitable screens”
This message means more than one session matches the short name or that Screen cannot safely choose one. List sessions and use the complete identifier of the intended session:
screen -ls
screen -r 12345.deploy
Using -S with a distinctive name at creation time prevents most ambiguity. Names such as deploy-api, migration-2026-10, or game-maint communicate purpose better than a default numeric identifier.

Read the full screen -ls output and decide whether the entry belongs to a genuinely abandoned process. Debian documents screen -wipe for removing entries for destroyed sessions:
screen -wipe
Do not run the cleanup blindly on a shared VPS. Confirm with other administrators first, because a listing that appears stale may represent a live session owned by another terminal or account.
The terminal is garbled after attaching
Resize the SSH terminal and reconnect, then reattach. Check the terminal emulator’s type and the $TERM environment value. Screen has terminal-emulation and size-adaptation options, but the result depends on the client and server combination. If the problem affects only one application, compare that application’s terminal settings before changing the whole Screen configuration.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Screen is unavailable on RHEL 8
Verify the release with cat /etc/os-release and inspect enabled repositories. RHEL 8’s omission of Screen is expected according to Red Hat’s guidance. Use the maintained tmux alternative where policy requires supported software, or obtain an approved community package if your administrators explicitly allow it. Installing a random binary does not solve the support and update problem.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The SSH connection drops while a command is running
Reconnect and run screen -ls before starting a second copy of the command. If the named session is listed, reattach with screen -r name. If it is still attached elsewhere, confirm ownership and use screen -d -r name only when you intend to take over that terminal. Starting the same migration or deployment twice can cause a separate problem even though Screen itself is working normally.
Share a session safely with another administrator
Screen supports multiuser sessions, but sharing is not automatic. The session owner must explicitly enable multiuser mode and grant the other account an ACL entry; password protection and operating-system permissions should be configured according to the server’s access policy. The second user can then attach to the shared session with:
screen -x session-name
Grant only the access required for the task. Everyone attached can see terminal output and may be able to type commands, so never share a shell that holds unnecessary root privileges, credentials, or customer data. Protect Screen’s socket directory and any log files with normal filesystem permissions. Remove the ACL when the maintenance window ends and verify that the other account can no longer attach.
Screen compared with tmux
Both tools provide persistent terminal sessions, windows, and detach/reattach workflows. The decisive choice on some servers is package maintenance rather than keyboard preference.
| Consideration | Screen | tmux |
|---|---|---|
| Availability on RHEL 8 | Omitted from RHEL 8 according to Red Hat; availability may require an approved community repository. | Recommended maintained alternative in Red Hat’s RHEL 8 guidance. |
| Default command prefix | Ctrl-a | Ctrl-b |
| Basic lifecycle | screen -S name, detach with Ctrl-a d, inspect with screen -ls, reattach with screen -r name. |
Uses a different command vocabulary and prefix, but the same session/window concept. |
| Windows | Virtual terminals selected with Ctrl-a c, Ctrl-a n, Ctrl-a p, and the window list. | Provides windows and panes with tmux-specific key bindings. |
| Multiuser controls | Explicit multiuser mode, ACLs, and shared attachment with screen -x. |
Has its own permission and sharing model; do not assume Screen commands transfer directly. |
| Logging | -L enables automatic logging and -Logfile can select a filename where supported. |
Uses different logging commands and configuration. |
If Screen is already installed and your team knows its controls, it remains effective for interactive VPS work. On a distribution that no longer ships it, choosing the maintained alternative avoids repository and update complications.
A repeatable VPS workflow
- Identify the operating system and release with
cat /etc/os-release. - Install Screen from the distribution’s approved repository, then run
screen --version. - Create a descriptive session, for example
screen -S game-maint. - Start the command and confirm that it is producing the expected output.
- Detach with Ctrl-a d; do not close the SSH window as a substitute for verifying detachment.
- After reconnecting, run
screen -lsand reattach by name withscreen -r game-maint. - When the work is complete, stop the command cleanly and exit the Screen shell so the session disappears from the listing.
This sequence keeps session names, ownership, and command state visible. It also prevents the common mistake of launching a duplicate process simply because the first one is running in a detached terminal.
