You can use Podman as an ordinary user (rootless) for isolated development, or as root (rootful) when a service needs host-level privileges. For containers that must survive reboots and be managed as services, use Podman Quadlet with systemd rather than hand-editing generated units.

You need a running Ubuntu 24.04 system, a user account that can run sudo, and network access to Ubuntu’s package repositories. The standard Podman installation instructions cover Ubuntu 20.10 and newer, which includes Ubuntu 24.04. A separate third-party repository is not part of the documented installation path.

- Rootless: run the CLI as your normal account. This avoids making the container-management command itself host-root and keeps that user’s images and containers separate from everyone else’s.
- Rootful: run the CLI through
sudo. This is appropriate for administration that needs host-level privileges, privileged devices, or other resources unavailable to an unprivileged account.
You can use both modes on one machine, but they do not share container or image state. A container created by your normal account will not appear in a later sudo podman ps, and a root-created container will not appear in ordinary podman ps.
Install Podman from Ubuntu’s repositories
- Refresh package metadata.
sudo apt-get update - Install Podman.
sudo apt-get -y install podman - Check the installed command.
podman --version - Inspect host integration.
podman info
podman --version reports the build selected by the Ubuntu 24.04 archive at the time you install or update it. The package version is not fixed by the installation instructions and may change as Ubuntu publishes updates, so scripts should not assume a particular version unless you have checked the package currently installed on your machine.

podman info is the most useful first diagnostic. It shows the storage, runtime, networking, cgroup, and rootless or rootful context that Podman detected. If a later command behaves differently from an example, check this output before adding packages or changing configuration.
Run your first containers
Use the built-in smoke test
Run the small example container in the foreground:
podman run -it hello
The -i option keeps standard input open and -t allocates a terminal. Podman downloads the image if it is not already present, creates a container, and attaches your terminal. A successful run confirms that the client can reach an image registry, create storage, and start a container.
Start a web container in the background
This example publishes an HTTP service on the host:
podman run -d --name web -p 8080:80 docker.io/library/nginx:alpine
-ddetaches and leaves the container running in the background.--name webgives the container a stable, readable name instead of relying on an automatically generated one.-p 8080:80maps host port 8080 to port 80 inside the container. A request sent to port 8080 on the host is forwarded to the web server’s port 80 in the container.docker.io/library/nginx:alpineidentifies the image explicitly, including its registry and tag.
After the command returns, open the service through the host’s port 8080 using the client appropriate to your system. The command itself does not claim that the service is reachable from every network interface or firewall configuration; it only creates the Podman port mapping.

Inspect, stop, and remove it
podman ps
podman ps -a
podman stop web
podman rm web
podman rmi IMAGE
podman ps lists running containers. Add -a to include containers that have exited. podman stop web asks the named container to stop, and podman rm web removes the stopped container record. Replace IMAGE in podman rmi IMAGE with the image name or ID you actually want to delete. Removing an image is separate from removing a container that was created from it.
Podman is daemonless for ordinary CLI work. You do not start a background Podman daemon before using podman run, podman ps, or podman stop. An API service is a separate, optional feature described later.
Understand rootless operation
Rootless Podman runs under your regular Linux account and automatically uses a user namespace. The account must have subordinate user and group ID ranges recorded in /etc/subuid and /etc/subgid. These ranges let processes inside the namespace receive mapped IDs without granting them the corresponding host privileges.
Check existing subordinate ranges first
Replace USERNAME with the account that will run rootless containers:
grep '^USERNAME:' /etc/subuid
grep '^USERNAME:' /etc/subgid
Inspect the output before changing anything. Do not blindly append a second range that duplicates an existing allocation.
Add ranges when they are missing
If the account has no suitable entries, the Podman manual gives this example:

sudo usermod --add-subuids 10000-75535 USERNAME
sudo usermod --add-subgids 10000-75535 USERNAME
Use the real account name in place of USERNAME. The numeric range in this example is an allocation for namespace mapping; it is not a statement that every Ubuntu installation must use those exact numbers. Existing local allocations and administrator policy take precedence.
After changing account mappings, start a fresh login session before relying on the new configuration. Then run podman info as the ordinary user and retry the container command. If rootless startup still reports a mapping or namespace error, verify both files and confirm that the entries belong to the account running Podman.
What “root” means inside a rootless container
A process that has UID 0 inside a rootless container is mapped to the invoking host user by default. It is therefore not equivalent to host root. This distinction limits what the container can do to the host and is one reason rootless mode is useful for everyday development.
Rootless and rootful: choose deliberately
| Concern | Rootless Podman | Rootful Podman |
|---|---|---|
| Command context | Run as the normal user, without sudo. |
Run as root, commonly with sudo podman .... |
| Container and image state | Stored in that user’s context and isolated from other users. | Stored in root’s context and separate from every unprivileged user. |
| Host privilege | Does not make the container’s namespace root equivalent to host root. | Can perform host-level administration subject to the container and system configuration. |
| Privileged resources | Best for ordinary development; some privileged ports, devices, and host integrations may be unavailable. | Use when administration genuinely requires privileged ports, devices, or host resources. |
| Typical systemd scope | A user service managed with systemctl --user. |
A system service managed by the administrator, normally under the system manager. |
| Visibility from the other mode | Not listed by sudo podman ps. |
Not listed by an ordinary user’s podman ps. |
When a command appears to “lose” a container, first check whether you changed users. Running podman ps and sudo podman ps queries different stores; neither output is a complete machine-wide inventory.
Use Podman for everyday container work
Keep the lifecycle commands straight
podman runcreates a new container from an image and starts it.podman psshows running containers;podman ps -aincludes stopped ones.podman stop NAMEstops a running container by name or ID.podman rm NAMEremoves a stopped container.podman rmi IMAGEremoves an image reference when it is no longer needed.podman inforeports the current user context and host configuration.podman --helpand the installed manual show the flags supported by the exact package on your system.
Use a readable name for services you expect to operate repeatedly. Names make stop, status, logs, and removal commands easier to audit than opaque IDs. For exploratory work, an attached podman run -it is usually clearer than creating a persistent service definition.
Separate exploration from persistent services
A direct podman run command is ideal for a one-off test or a temporary development container. It records the resulting container, but it does not by itself describe the desired state to systemd. If a container must be started, stopped, and inspected as part of the host’s service lifecycle, use a Quadlet file instead of copying a generated unit and editing that copy.

Run a container as a systemd service with Quadlet
Quadlet is Podman’s declarative systemd integration. You describe a container, pod, image, network, volume, or Kubernetes YAML deployment in a Quadlet file; a systemd generator translates that description into a service unit. Quadlet requires cgroup v2.
Create a rootless Quadlet container
- Create the per-user configuration directory.
mkdir -p ~/.config/containers/systemd/ - Create the source file. Save this as
~/.config/containers/systemd/web.container:
[Container]
Image=docker.io/library/nginx:alpine
ContainerName=web
PublishPort=8080:80
- Reload the user systemd manager.
systemctl --user daemon-reload - Start the generated service. The basename
web.containerproducesweb.service:systemctl --user start web.service - Check its status.
systemctl --user status web.service
Edit the Quadlet source file when you need to change the image, name, or published port. Do not edit the generated service unit; the generator can recreate it during a reload and overwrite manual changes. After every source-file change, run systemctl --user daemon-reload and restart or start the service as appropriate.
Quadlet keys and behavior can vary with the Podman release shipped by your distribution. Consult the installed podman-systemd.unit manual for the exact keys supported by your package rather than copying options from a different release.
Rootful Quadlet placement
Administrator-managed rootful Quadlet files commonly live in /etc/containers/systemd/. They are generated for the system systemd manager rather than a user manager. Choose this location only when the service should run in the rootful context; placing a file there will not make a rootless container visible to root or vice versa.

Use the optional Podman API socket
Most local Podman commands do not need an API socket. Start one only when another client needs the Docker-compatible API. The socket gives that client control over containers in the corresponding user or root context, so treat it as a privileged control interface.
Rootless socket
- Start the user socket:
systemctl --user start podman.socket - Use the documented rootless endpoint:
unix://$XDG_RUNTIME_DIR/podman/podman.sock
The endpoint is tied to the invoking user’s runtime directory and therefore reaches that user’s Podman state, not root’s.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Rootful socket
- Start the system socket:
sudo systemctl start podman.socket - Use the rootful endpoint:
unix:///run/podman/podman.sock
Do not expose an unauthenticated TCP endpoint merely for convenience. Unix sockets are the documented defaults, and access to the socket provides substantial control over containers in its security context.
Keep a user socket available after reboot
A user service normally depends on a login session. If a rootless API socket must be available after reboot without an active login session, enable lingering for the account:
Recommended Free Tools
loginctl enable-linger USERNAME
Replace USERNAME with the account that owns the rootless service. This changes when the user systemd manager is started; it does not merge rootless and rootful container state.
Troubleshoot the common failure modes
podman is not found after installation
Confirm that the package command completed successfully, then open a new shell if your environment has not refreshed its command lookup. Run podman --version with the same account that will operate containers. If installation was performed in a different environment, repeat sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get -y install podman on the target Ubuntu 24.04 system.
podman ps is empty but you know a container exists
Check whether it is stopped with podman ps -a. Then check the user context: compare ordinary podman ps -a with sudo podman ps -a. Rootless and rootful stores are intentionally separate, so an empty result in one context does not prove that the container was deleted.
Rootless startup reports UID or GID mapping problems
Inspect /etc/subuid and /etc/subgid for the actual account. Add non-duplicate ranges with usermod --add-subuids and --add-subgids only when needed, then start a fresh login session and recheck podman info. Avoid adding arbitrary overlapping ranges that could conflict with another account.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A Quadlet unit does not appear
Check that the file is in the correct directory and uses the expected basename. A rootless file belongs under ~/.config/containers/systemd/ and is managed with systemctl --user; a rootful file belongs under /etc/containers/systemd/ and is managed by the system manager. Run the appropriate daemon-reload, then inspect the generated service status. Verify that the host uses cgroup v2, which Quadlet requires.
A service change has no effect
Edit the .container source, not the generated .service. Run the matching systemd manager’s daemon-reload, then restart the service. If an option is rejected, consult the installed podman-systemd.unit manual because supported keys differ between Podman releases.
A client cannot connect through the API
Confirm that you started the socket in the same context the client expects. Rootless clients use unix://$XDG_RUNTIME_DIR/podman/podman.sock; rootful clients use unix:///run/podman/podman.sock. Starting the rootful socket will not expose rootless containers. For a socket that must exist before login, configure user lingering and then verify the user service.
Quick Recap
A practical operating checklist
- Install from Ubuntu’s repositories with
apt-get updatefollowed byapt-get -y install podman. - Verify both the binary and host integration using
podman --versionandpodman info. - Run
podman run -it hellobefore troubleshooting a larger image or service. - Use a normal account for rootless work and remember that its state is separate from
sudo podman. - Check subordinate UID and GID entries before adding mappings.
- Use direct
podman runfor experiments and Quadlet for declarative systemd services. - Keep Quadlet source files under the correct user or system directory and reload the matching systemd manager after edits.
- Start the API socket only when a client needs it, prefer Unix sockets, and avoid unauthenticated TCP exposure.
