A downloaded preset is usually an .ini configuration and may require specific effects; it is not a Sims mod to install by placing it in the game’s Mods folder.
What ReShade changes—and what it does not
ReShade post-processes a game’s graphics, letting you apply visual effects through a preset. The official ReShade site describes shareable preset .ini files and lists support for Direct3D 9, 10, 11, and 12, OpenGL, and Vulkan.

That is separate from Sims 4 mods and custom content: those are player-made additions managed through the game’s Mods workflow. A ReShade preset changes how the image is presented; it does not add ordinary in-game content.
Before installing: identify the active rendering API
Choose the API that The Sims 4 is actually using when you run it. ReShade’s setup asks which rendering API the game uses. EA’s Sims 4 FAQ lists DirectX 11 compatibility, but that alone does not establish which renderer is active on every player’s system. Check your game’s graphics configuration and any relevant launch or compatibility settings rather than assuming there is one universal choice.

If you are unsure, verify the setting before installing. Picking an API that does not match the game can prevent ReShade from loading correctly.
How to install ReShade in The Sims 4
- Get the installer from ReShade’s official site. Use reshade.me for the current installer rather than an unfamiliar download mirror.
- Run setup and select The Sims 4 executable. When prompted, point the installer to the game executable you launch.
- Select the matching graphics API. Choose the API you verified the game is using. ReShade supports multiple APIs; DirectX 11 compatibility in EA’s FAQ is not proof that every installation is currently running it.
- Install effects if prompted or required. The installation can include shader and texture folders. Follow the preset creator’s instructions for any required effects rather than assuming all presets use the same ones.
- Launch the game and open ReShade’s in-game interface. Use the interface to select an existing preset or create one, then save or load the relevant
.inifile as needed.
ReShade’s troubleshooting forum discusses installation files and shader-folder layout. Exact prompts and installer behavior can change, so follow the current installer and the instructions for the specific preset you choose.

Choose and load a preset carefully
A preset is a configuration, not a guarantee of a particular look or performance level. Before downloading one, check its creator’s notes for the ReShade version, required effects, installation steps, and compatibility details. Use a source you trust; EA likewise advises Sims players to download mods from trusted sources and notes that it does not pre-screen or endorse specific mods.

- Visual style: Decide whether the intended look suits your game and preferences.
- Compatibility notes: Check the stated ReShade version and any game or renderer requirements.
- Dependencies: Confirm which effects or files the preset calls for.
- Installation clarity: Prefer instructions that identify where the preset and required files belong.
- Observed performance: Test the preset on your own system; available sources do not establish a universal performance result or best preset.

- The preset behaves differently after an update: Recheck the preset creator’s compatibility notes and the installed ReShade version. EA warns that game updates can create mod compatibility issues and recommends checking with creators; the same cautious approach is sensible for unofficial presets and their dependencies.
- You cannot identify a single cause: Revisit the API selection, preset path, and required effects, then consult ReShade’s troubleshooting information. There is no one Sims-specific fix established for every failure.
ReShade is not installed through the Sims 4 Mods folder
EA’s Mods installation instructions apply to Sims mods and custom content, not ReShade. For those game additions, EA says to extract downloaded archives, put the mod files in the Sims 4 Mods folder, enable Custom Content and Mods in Game Options, and relaunch. EA also says mods are unavailable on console.
