How to Install and Use Script Mods in The Sims 4

To use a script mod in The Sims 4 on PC or Mac, extract its downloaded files into Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4/Mods, make sure the .ts4script file is no more than one folder deep, enable both mod settings in the game, and restart. Check the mod creator’s compatibility notes before installing, especially after a game update.

Before you install a script mod

• Confirm the download is for The Sims 4 and that the creator says it works with your current game update. EA does not pre-screen or endorse individual mods, so download from a source or creator you trust. See EA’s mod-installation guidance.
• Back up your save files before enabling mods. The game’s Saves folder is inside the same The Sims 4 user folder as Mods; the EA Forums guide recommends making a backup.

How to install and enable a script mod

1. Download and extract the files. If the download is a .zip or .rar archive, extract it before moving files into the Mods folder. Do not leave compressed archives—or a .7z archive—in Mods. Follow the creator’s instructions about which extracted files to install.
2. Open the game’s user Mods folder. The usual location is Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 > Mods. If there is no Mods folder, create one there. The exact Documents location can vary depending on your computer’s setup; use the The Sims 4 user folder that contains your saves and other game data. EA’s installation article and CurseForge’s manual guide give the installation locations and steps.
3. Place the script file at a supported depth. A script mod contains a .ts4script file. Put it directly in Mods or in one subfolder, for example Mods/ModName/file.ts4script. Do not bury it two or more folders deep, such as Mods/ModName/AnotherFolder/file.ts4script. Install any accompanying files as the creator directs. 4. Turn on both mod settings. From the Main Menu, open Game Options > Other. Check Enable Custom Content and Mods and Script Mods Allowed, then apply the changes. The script-mod option is required in addition to the general custom-content setting; see the EA Forums guide.
5. Restart the game. Relaunch after applying the settings so the game can load the mod. Some mods require extra setup or an in-game action after installation. For example, the Forums guide notes that MC Command Center may need its own settings configured; use the instructions for your specific mod rather than assuming all script mods work the same way.

What to do after a game update

Game updates can disable mods, and an outdated mod may cause problems or need to be reinstalled. EA’s mods, updates, and error-codes guidance recommends checking the game with mods disabled before turning them back on:

1. Launch the game after the update with mods disabled and check whether it runs properly.
2. Exit without saving during this check. EA warns that saving after launching without custom content and mods can remove that content from the save.
3. Check the mod creator’s site for compatibility information. Update or reinstall an outdated mod as the creator instructs.
4. Enable the mod settings again, restart, and check whether the game works with the updated mods.

Problems can range from the game failing to start or load a save to smaller gameplay or custom-content glitches. EA notes that there is no single way to determine whether a mod caused a particular issue, so check creator guidance and test cautiously.

Troubleshoot a script mod that does not appear

• Confirm the file is in the right place: find the game’s user folder under Documents, then check Electronic Arts/The Sims 4/Mods.
• Check the file and folder depth: extract the archive and make sure the .ts4script file is directly in Mods or only one folder below it.
• Check both settings: verify that Enable Custom Content and Mods and Script Mods Allowed are enabled under Game Options > Other, and restart after changing them.
• Check the creator’s instructions: the mod may need a compatible version, a dependency, or an additional in-game activation step.
• If the issue began after an update: test with mods disabled and do not save during the check; then verify compatibility before reinstalling or re-enabling the mod.

Which platforms support script mods?

EA’s installation guidance covers mods on PC and Mac. EA says mods are not available on PlayStation or Xbox. Its caution is explicit: “Maxis and EA don’t pre-screen, endorse, or support specific Mods or Custom Content.” Read the EA mod guidance before downloading and use trusted creators.
