Fish gives interactive terminal work features such as autosuggestions and a different, more deliberate configuration language. It does not turn Bash or POSIX scripts into Fish scripts, and making it your SSH login shell can expose PATH or startup-file compatibility problems. This guide covers installation, configuration, PATH changes, functions, default-shell changes, rollback, and script boundaries on an Ubuntu VPS.

What Fish changes on an Ubuntu VPS
Fish is an interactive Unix shell designed to provide useful defaults without requiring a large collection of plugins. It offers syntax highlighting, autosuggestions, completion, and a configuration model that is separate from Bash. You can run it alongside Bash: install it, start it with fish when needed, and leave it with exit.
The important operational distinction is between an interactive shell and a login shell. Starting fish manually affects only that current process. Changing the account’s login shell affects future terminal logins, including SSH connections. Fish’s official documentation warns: “Setting fish as your login shell may cause issues, such as an incorrect PATH.” Treat the default-shell change as optional and test it only after you know how to restore Bash or another supported shell.

Before you install
You need an Ubuntu VPS that you can reach over SSH and an account allowed to use sudo. Keep one existing SSH connection open while you test a new shell later; that connection is your recovery path if a new login has a bad PATH or startup error.
- Confirm that you are connected to the intended VPS, not a local workstation or a production host you did not mean to change.
- Check that your account can run administrative commands with
sudo. - Record the current shell and key command locations before changing anything.
printf '%sn' "$SHELL",command -v bash, andcommand -v fishare useful checks. - Do not replace system shell binaries or edit system startup files just to try Fish.
Ubuntu releases can provide different Fish versions through their normal repositories. The distribution package is the least surprising starting point because it follows your release’s package lifecycle and dependency handling.
Install Fish from Ubuntu’s repository
-
Connect to the VPS with SSH using your normal account.
-
Refresh package metadata:
sudo apt update -
Install Fish:
sudo apt install fishAccept the package prompt when the package manager shows the planned installation. If APT reports that the package cannot be found, verify the Ubuntu release and repository configuration before trying an unrelated installer.
-
Locate the executable and print its version:
command -v fish fish --versioncommand -v fishshould print the path that your account will use, commonly a path under/usr/bin. The version output confirms that the binary can start; it also gives you a useful value to include when diagnosing release-specific behavior.
When the Fish project PPA is appropriate
The Fish project documents an Ubuntu release PPA path:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →sudo apt-add-repository ppa:fish-shell/release-4
sudo apt update
sudo apt install fish
Use that path only when you have a specific reason to use the project’s release stream, such as a Fish feature your Ubuntu repository does not provide. Package availability and supported releases vary, so adding a PPA changes your host’s package sources and maintenance responsibility. For a general VPS setup, start with Ubuntu’s package and move to the PPA deliberately rather than treating it as a required step.
Try Fish without changing your login shell
After installation, launch Fish from your existing shell:
fish
You are now inside a Fish process. Test completion, command history, and the commands you use for your normal administration work. To return to the parent shell, run:

This temporary workflow is the safest way to discover syntax differences. It changes neither your account record nor the interpreter used by existing scripts. You can open Fish whenever you need its interactive features while retaining Bash as the SSH login shell.
Understand Fish’s configuration files
Fish reads per-user startup files from ~/.config/fish. The main file is:
~/.config/fish/config.fish
Fish also automatically reads files ending in .fish in:
~/.config/fish/conf.d/
Files in conf.d are useful for small, independent startup snippets. Keep a setting in config.fish when you want one central personal configuration; use a separate file when you want to enable, disable, or maintain a particular setting independently. Fish reads these files when it starts, so a change normally takes effect in the next Fish process.
Create the directory and main file if they do not exist:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
mkdir -p ~/.config/fish
touch ~/.config/fish/config.fish
Use Fish’s status tests when a setting should apply to only one kind of session:
if status --is-interactive
# Commands for interactive Fish sessions
end
if status --is-login
# Commands for login Fish sessions
end
An interactive test prevents prompt-oriented commands from running in noninteractive contexts. A login test limits environment initialization to login shells. These distinctions matter on a VPS because an SSH login, a nested shell, a command run by automation, and a script can have different startup behavior.
Use Fish syntax for variables and PATH
Fish is not Bash with a different prompt. Its variable, function, and conditional syntax is different, so Bash startup lines should not be pasted into config.fish. In particular, a Bash line such as export PATH=... is not Fish syntax.
Add a directory to PATH
For a persistent personal PATH addition, Fish’s current documentation recommends fish_add_path:

fish_add_path ~/linux/bin
Run it from Fish, or place the command in a Fish startup file when it should be applied as Fish starts. The command is designed for path management and avoids repeatedly appending the same directory in the way a naïve string assignment can.
If a path should be added only for login sessions, the documented pattern is:
if status --is-login
set -gx PATH $PATH ~/linux/bin
end
set -gx creates or updates an exported global variable. The PATH value is a list in Fish, so each directory is a separate element rather than a colon-delimited string you manually assemble. Use the Fish form consistently in Fish files; do not mix it with Bash’s export assignment.
Check the effective PATH
After editing a file, start a new Fish process or source the file and inspect the result:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →fish
printf '%sn' $PATH
command -v your-command
Replace your-command with a real executable you expect to find. If it is still missing, determine whether the directory was added to the Fish process, whether the executable has execute permission, and whether you edited the account that actually owns the SSH session.
Add functions and persistent variables
Save a function
Fish functions can be stored as files in:
~/.config/fish/functions
For example, this function creates an ll command that wraps ls -lh:
function ll
ls -lh $argv
end
Save it as ~/.config/fish/functions/ll.fish. The $argv list passes any arguments supplied to ll, so ll /var/log forwards the directory to ls. You can also define a function interactively and save it with Fish’s function mechanisms; keeping a file under your home directory makes the behavior visible and backup-friendly.
Use universal variables deliberately
Fish universal variables persist across Fish sessions. The tutorial at fishshell.com’s Fish tutorial illustrates this form:
set -U EDITOR vim
Use universal scope only when the value should be shared by every Fish instance for that user. A universal variable can affect shells you start later, so it is broader than a one-session assignment. If a setting belongs only to one startup context, prefer an appropriately scoped variable in config.fish or a conf.d snippet.

Make Fish the default SSH login shell
Changing the login shell is optional. Do it only after you have used Fish interactively, checked your PATH, and prepared a rollback route. The account’s login-shell field is used when you establish a new terminal login, including SSH; it does not rewrite scripts already stored on the VPS.
-
Find the exact Fish executable path:
command -v fishCopy the path printed by this command. Using the actual installed path avoids changing the account to a nonexistent binary.

Ensure that path is listed in the system’s approved login shells:
command -v fish | sudo tee -a /etc/shellsInspect
/etc/shellsfirst if you want to avoid adding a duplicate line. The path must be present for tools that validate login shells. -
Change the current user’s login shell:
chsh -s "$(command -v fish)"If your environment asks for confirmation or a password, complete that prompt. The command changes the account record; it does not terminate your existing SSH connection.
-
Open a separate SSH connection and verify it:
ssh user@your-vps printf '%sn' "$SHELL" ps -p $$ -o comm=Use your real username and hostname. The process command should identify Fish, and the session should have the PATH and functions you expect.

Safety, recovery, and rollback
Why login-shell changes can fail
Some systems and administrative tools assume a Bourne-compatible login shell that reads files such as /etc/profile. Fish has its own startup rules and syntax. A PATH assembled by system login files may therefore be absent or different, and a command that was available in Bash may not be found in Fish. Fish’s own warning about an incorrect PATH is an operational caution, not a claim that every Ubuntu installation will fail.
Keep a recovery connection
Before changing the shell, leave one authenticated SSH session untouched. Use the second connection for testing. If the new login exits immediately, cannot find administrative commands, or displays startup errors, the original session gives you a place to restore the account.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Restore Bash
From the working recovery session, confirm the Bash path and that it is approved:
command -v bash
grep -x "$(command -v bash)" /etc/shells
If the path is present, restore it:
chsh -s /bin/bash
Use the actual Bash path reported on your VPS rather than assuming /bin/bash if your system differs. Open another SSH connection to confirm the rollback. If Fish starts but your configuration causes the problem, temporarily move or rename the relevant file under ~/.config/fish, reconnect with Fish, and correct the syntax before restoring it.
Keep scripts on their intended interpreter
Changing your interactive login shell does not convert Bash, POSIX shell, or other scripts to Fish. A script should identify its interpreter with a shebang when it is executed directly. For example, a Bash script can continue to begin with a Bash shebang even if the account’s interactive shell is Fish.
To run a Fish script explicitly, invoke Fish:
fish /path/to/script
The shebang tells the operating system which interpreter to use when a script is launched without an explicit interpreter command. Keep deployment hooks, cron jobs, service wrappers, and maintenance scripts explicit about their interpreter. This prevents an account-level login-shell preference from silently changing script behavior.
Bash login shell or Fish login shell?
There is no universal requirement to replace Bash. Choose based on how the VPS is administered and how much interactive convenience matters.
| Concern | Keep Bash as login shell | Use Fish as login shell |
|---|---|---|
| Interactive usability | Bash can provide familiar history, completion, and prompts, with customization added separately. | Fish supplies syntax highlighting, autosuggestions, and completion-oriented defaults with less initial setup. |
| Configuration syntax | Uses Bash startup files and Bourne-style variable and function syntax. | Uses ~/.config/fish/config.fish, optional conf.d snippets, Fish variables, and Fish functions. |
| PATH and environment | Existing system and user login configuration is more likely to match the shell’s expectations. | PATH is managed with Fish syntax and may need explicit configuration for commands you rely on. |
| Scripts and tooling | A practical compatibility fallback for scripts or tooling expecting Bourne-style startup behavior. | Suitable for interactive work, but scripts still need their own interpreter and should not depend on Fish being the login shell. |
| Recovery over SSH | Usually requires no account change and remains the straightforward fallback. | Requires testing a second connection and keeping a known-good shell available for rollback. |
A common compromise is to keep Bash as the login shell and launch Fish interactively when you want its interface. That arrangement avoids changing the account record while still letting you use Fish for administration sessions.
Troubleshoot common problems
sudo apt install fish cannot find the package
- Run
sudo apt updateagain and read the repository errors rather than ignoring them. - Confirm the VPS is running Ubuntu and identify its release before changing package sources.
- Check that the configured Ubuntu repositories are reachable and enabled.
- Consider the Fish project PPA only when its supported release stream fits your maintenance plan.
Fish starts, but a command is “not found”
- Run
command -v command-namein Bash and Fish to compare visibility. - Print Fish’s list with
printf '%sn' $PATHand check that the executable’s directory is present. - Add the directory with
fish_add_pathor a correctly scoped Fish setting. - Start a new Fish process after changing a startup file so you test the file as Fish reads it.
A Bash line causes a Fish startup error
Open ~/.config/fish/config.fish and any enabled file under ~/.config/fish/conf.d. Remove or rewrite Bash constructs such as export NAME=value, Bash-style function declarations, and Bash condition syntax using Fish equivalents. If the error prevents a useful login, use the open recovery SSH session to rename the offending file and reconnect.
The new SSH session does not behave like the test shell
The test shell may have been nested inside Bash and therefore was not a login shell. Compare status --is-login and status --is-interactive in Fish, then place login-only settings inside the appropriate condition. Also verify that you edited the same user’s home directory and did not rely on an environment variable that exists only in the old session.
chsh rejects Fish
Check the exact path from command -v fish and confirm that the same path appears as a complete line in /etc/shells. Add it with administrative privileges if necessary, then run chsh again. If your hosting environment manages account shells centrally, its policy may prevent local changes; use the provider’s documented account-management method or keep Bash as the login shell.

Quick Recap
A practical first-day checklist
- Connect over SSH with a sudo-capable account.
- Run
sudo apt updateandsudo apt install fish. - Verify with
command -v fishandfish --version. - Launch
fish, test your normal commands, and leave withexit. - Create
~/.config/fish/config.fishonly when you have a setting to add. - Use Fish syntax and
fish_add_pathfor PATH changes; do not paste Bash exports. - Put reusable functions under
~/.config/fish/functionsand use universal variables only for values that should persist across Fish sessions. - If you want Fish for SSH logins, add its exact executable path to
/etc/shells, runchsh, and test a second connection. - Keep the original SSH session until the new login and rollback procedure are confirmed.
- Leave existing scripts on their declared interpreters and invoke Fish scripts explicitly when needed.
