You can run Android apps on a SteamOS handheld using Waydroid, an Android container for Linux. On Steam Deck, a community-maintained installer handles SteamOS-specific setup and can add a Game Mode launcher. This is an unofficial, version-sensitive setup—not a Valve-supported Android feature—and the Deck installer should not be assumed to support every SteamOS handheld.
Before you install: check your device and SteamOS version
Waydroid is the core Android environment; the Steam Deck installer wraps it with device-specific setup. Before changing your system, review the installer’s current compatibility information for your exact handheld and SteamOS build. A separate community project documents support against specific SteamOS target configurations, rather than claiming universal handheld compatibility: SteamOS Waydroid Bundle.
This is an advanced community setup. Back up Android data you care about: the installer documentation warns that a SteamOS update can wipe Waydroid, and a kernel change may require a matching Binder module before its script will work. Check the project’s current installer guide again after a SteamOS update.
Install Waydroid on Steam Deck
Use the installer’s current instructions rather than relying on a copied command sequence: repository branches, prerequisites and supported SteamOS configurations can change. The documented flow uses Desktop Mode and Konsole, requires a configured sudo password, and involves cloning the installer repository and running its script.

- Confirm compatibility and prerequisites. Read the current installer guide for your SteamOS build and follow its listed preparation steps, including setting a
sudopassword if needed. - Switch to Desktop Mode. Open Konsole and follow the repository’s current clone-and-run instructions exactly. Do not substitute an old command or branch for the one currently documented.
- Choose an Android image when prompted. The installer documentation describes options that include Android 13 variants and Android TV images. Available choices depend on the installer’s current version; these are project options, not a guarantee that every Waydroid setup offers them.
- Complete setup and check the launcher. Follow the installer’s finishing instructions. The project documents both a desktop launch route and a Waydroid entry for Steam Deck Game Mode.
The image choice affects the environment you install. The Deck installer documents Android and Android TV options, while Google apps depend on selecting an image that includes GAPPS. Waydroid’s general documentation says F-Droid or the Play Store can be used when a GAPPS image is installed; neither store is guaranteed by Waydroid alone. Install Android apps and launch them

With Waydroid running, install a local APK from Konsole using the documented command form:

waydroid app install xyz.apk
Replace xyz.apk with the file name or path for your APK. Waydroid adds installed apps to the desktop application menu; the Deck installer also documents a Game Mode launcher integration.
Check APK architecture
An APK is not automatically compatible just because it is an Android app. Waydroid warns: “The apk files you will sometimes find on the internet tend to only have arm support, and will therefore not work on x86_64.” Prefer an APK that supports x86_64, or otherwise verify that the package is compatible with your Waydroid environment before troubleshooting the install itself.

Choose how to launch apps
- Desktop Mode: Launch installed apps from the desktop application menu, as described in Waydroid’s documentation.
- Game Mode: On Steam Deck, use the installer’s documented Waydroid entry or its instructions for direct Game Mode launching. This integration is specific to the Deck-focused installer; do not assume another SteamOS handheld has the same launcher setup.
Troubleshoot common problems
An APK will not install or run
Check its architecture first: ARM-only packages are a common mismatch for an x86_64 environment. If the architecture is suitable, confirm the app supports the Android image and Waydroid setup you installed. The available project documentation does not establish broad compatibility for apps that depend on Play Integrity, DRM, or specialized hardware, so a successful installation does not guarantee those features will work.
Waydroid fails after a SteamOS update
Review the installer’s current compatibility notes for the new SteamOS build. Its documentation says an update can wipe the installation, while a new kernel can require a matching Binder module before the script runs. Follow the project’s updated recovery or installation instructions rather than assuming the previous setup will persist.

There is no Play Store
Waydroid’s documentation ties Play Store availability to use of a GAPPS image. Check which image you selected and the installer’s current image options; the Play Store is not an automatic feature of every Waydroid installation.
Storage: a microSD card is optional
The Deck installer links instructions for configuring SD-card storage, but does not say a card is required or specify a capacity or speed. Use its storage guidance if you want Waydroid data on a card, and verify the current steps for your setup before moving or changing data locations.
Android image versions are project-specific
Image availability and support depend on the project and its current build. The separate SteamOS Waydroid Bundle project describes Android 13 as its normal supported path and Android 16 as experimental, with compatibility tied to particular SteamOS target fingerprints. Those statements apply to that project, not to all Waydroid installations; check its current documentation before choosing a build.
