Choose the server software according to what your players need: CraftBukkit or Spigot for Bukkit-compatible plugins, Forge for Forge mods, SpongeForge when you need Forge mods plus Sponge plugins, or SpongeVanilla for Sponge support on a vanilla-based server. All four options run on Minecraft: Java Edition and require a Java runtime compatible with the exact Minecraft and platform release.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
Use a clean, dedicated directory, perform one vanilla-style first launch to generate files, accept the EULA in eula.txt, and only then add plugins or mods. The steps below cover installation, file locations, Java requirements, networking, updates and the failures that most often stop a new server.

What you need before installing anything
Every option starts with the same foundation. Minecraft’s official server setup requires a compatible Java Runtime Environment, and the required Java major version changes with the Minecraft and server-software release. Use 64-bit Java whenever the platform documentation calls for it, especially for modded servers that need more memory.
Check Java first
- Install the Java runtime or JDK required by your target Minecraft and platform version.
- Open a terminal or command prompt and run
java -version. - Confirm that the reported major version and 64-bit architecture match the release documentation before downloading a server JAR.
Forge’s current setup documentation lists a 64-bit Java 21 JDK/JVM as a prerequisite for its latest documented setup. That is not a universal requirement for every Forge release: older Minecraft and Forge combinations use older Java versions. Sponge’s compatibility examples likewise vary, including Java 8 for some SpongeAPI 7.x and 8.x entries and Java 17 for an example SpongeAPI 9.x entry. Treat Java as a release-specific dependency rather than assuming that the newest Java works with every server.

Create a clean server directory
Create a new directory dedicated to this server, such as MinecraftServer. Keep downloaded installers and BuildTools in separate working directories, and store backups outside the live server directory. Do not mix files from different Minecraft versions in one folder. A clean directory makes it possible to identify which loader, mods or plugins caused a failure and to restore a known-good copy.
Run the vanilla baseline once
Even when your final installation will be Forge, Spigot, CraftBukkit or Sponge, a controlled first launch establishes the directory structure and exposes the EULA requirement.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Download the official Minecraft: Java Edition server JAR for the version you intend to run.
- Place the JAR in the dedicated server directory.
- Run it from that directory with the Java command appropriate to your system, for example
java -jar server.jar. - Allow the process to create its initial files. The first run normally stops after writing files such as
eula.txt. - Open
eula.txt, read the license, and change the setting toeula=trueonly if you agree to it. - Start the server again and confirm that it reaches a running state before adding another server implementation.
Do not delete the generated files to bypass the stop. The EULA setting is deliberately required before normal operation, and Forge also expects acceptance in the eula.txt located in its run directory.
Pick the implementation that matches your server
| Implementation | Best fit | How software is obtained | Content model | Java and update considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CraftBukkit | Bukkit-compatible plugin servers that need the CraftBukkit implementation | Built with the official Spigot BuildTools workflow | Bukkit plugins; no Forge mod loader | Java must match the target Minecraft release; update the built artifact and plugins together |
| Spigot | Plugin servers wanting CraftBukkit compatibility with additional optimizations and features | Built with official Spigot BuildTools | Bukkit/Spigot plugins; no Forge mod loader | Java and plugin compatibility track the Minecraft release; test updates on a copy |
| Forge | Servers whose gameplay depends on Forge mods | Forge installer and generated server launcher | Forge mods in the server’s mod-loading structure | Java requirement is strongly version-sensitive; current Forge setup documentation lists 64-bit Java 21 |
| SpongeForge | Forge modpacks or mods that also need Sponge plugins | Compatible Forge server plus matching SpongeForge build | Forge mods and Sponge plugins | Both Forge/Minecraft and Sponge versions must be compatible |
| SpongeVanilla | Vanilla-based gameplay with Sponge’s API and plugin system | SpongeVanilla server JAR | Sponge plugins without a Forge mod loader | Often simpler to set up and update than Forge plus SpongeForge; still follow the release’s Java requirement |
There is no universally best choice. Start with the mod or plugin ecosystem your players require, then select the implementation whose Minecraft version and Java support are available for that content.
Install CraftBukkit or Spigot with BuildTools
Spigot describes itself as “a fork of CraftBukkit with extra optimizations and more features sprinkled on top.” Both projects are produced through the same BuildTools family, so the safe installation path is to build the release yourself rather than downloading an unknown server JAR.
1. Prepare BuildTools separately
Download the official BuildTools JAR and place it in a temporary build directory, not in the live server directory. Install the Java version required by the Minecraft release you are targeting. BuildTools creates the server artifacts for that release and may require network access while it retrieves project dependencies.

- PLAY TOGETHER — Play cross-platform with friends in Bedrock Edition on console, mobile, and PC, or join community servers in Java Edition on PC, Mac, and Linux. Online console multiplayer requires a platform-specific subscription (sold separately).
2. Build the release
From the BuildTools directory, run the official command for the desired revision, following the syntax documented for that release. A typical form is:
java -jar BuildTools.jar --rev <Minecraft-version>
Replace the value in angle brackets with the exact Minecraft version you intend to run. Do not combine artifacts from different revisions. When the build completes, identify the generated Spigot or CraftBukkit JAR and copy it into a new, otherwise clean server directory. Keep the BuildTools directory for rebuilding or repeatable updates, but do not run the live server from it.
3. Start Spigot or CraftBukkit
Rename the copied file only if you also update your start command. For Spigot, a release-appropriate example is:
java -Xms1G -Xmx2G -jar spigot.jar nogui
-Xms1G sets the initial heap and -Xmx2G sets the maximum heap in this example; adjust both to the machine’s available memory and the server’s workload. Use the actual generated filename if it differs from spigot.jar. CraftBukkit uses the same pattern with its own JAR filename.
The first successful launch creates configuration files including server.properties, bukkit.yml and, for Spigot, spigot.yml. Stop the process cleanly, review those files, and change one setting at a time so a later problem can be traced to a known edit.
4. Add plugins safely
Use plugins that explicitly support your Minecraft and Bukkit/Spigot version. Keep a copy of the clean, first-working directory before installing a batch of plugins. Add one or a small, related group at a time, start the server, and inspect the console for dependency or version errors.

Do not download “ready-made” Spigot or CraftBukkit JARs from random websites. Spigot’s documentation warns that Internet-hosted JARs can be outdated or trojanized. The BuildTools output and official project instructions provide a verifiable route to the server software.
Install Forge for a modded server
1. Select matching versions
Choose the Forge installer that names the exact Minecraft version required by your modpack or mods. Read that Forge release’s Java requirement before running the installer. The latest Forge setup documentation calls for a 64-bit Java 21 JDK/JVM, while older Forge branches may require a different major version.
2. Install into an empty directory
- Create a new directory used only for this Forge server.
- Run the Forge installer and choose the server-installation option.
- Point the installer at the empty directory rather than an existing vanilla, Spigot or CraftBukkit folder.
- Let the installer create the Forge libraries, configuration files and generated launch scripts.
Keeping the Forge installation isolated prevents loader files from being overwritten by another implementation and gives you a clean rollback point.
3. Complete the first Forge launch
Run the generated server launcher from the Forge directory, using the supplied script or launcher name for your operating system. The initial run may stop after creating files. Open the generated eula.txt, read it, set eula=true only if you agree, and launch again. Add memory flags through the generated launch script or the documented Java command rather than guessing a launcher filename that may differ between Forge releases.
4. Add and test mods
Install only mods whose Minecraft version and Forge version match the server. A mod built for a neighboring Minecraft release can fail during loading even when its name looks correct. Preserve a copy of the clean Forge directory before adding mods. If the server stops after a change, remove the newest mod from the server’s mod directory, restore the known-good copy if necessary, and check the log for the first reported incompatibility rather than the final cascade of errors.
Install Sponge: SpongeForge or SpongeVanilla
Sponge has two distinct implementations. SpongePowered defines SpongeForge as “a mod for Forge that allows you to use Sponge plugins with Forge mods,” while SpongeVanilla is “a server jar that adds Sponge support directly into vanilla Minecraft.” Choose between them based on whether Forge mods are part of the design.

SpongeForge: Forge plus Sponge plugins
- Build and test the compatible Forge server first.
- Download the SpongeForge build that matches both the Minecraft version and the Forge branch.
- Place the SpongeForge file in the server’s
modsdirectory alongside the other Forge mods. - Start the server and confirm that Forge loads Sponge before adding Sponge plugins.
SpongeForge is not a replacement for Forge; it extends a Forge server. A mismatch in either Forge or Minecraft version can prevent the server from starting.
SpongeVanilla: Sponge on a vanilla base
- Download the SpongeVanilla server JAR for the target Minecraft version.
- Put it in a clean server directory and launch it from that directory.
- Complete the first-run EULA process in the generated
eula.txt. - Restart, verify that the server reaches the console prompt, and then add compatible Sponge plugins.
SpongeVanilla can be easier to set up and update than the Forge-plus-SpongeForge combination because it does not add the Forge mod loader. It is not suitable when players require Forge mods.
Put Sponge plugins in the version-correct directory
Plugin placement depends on SpongeAPI generation:
| SpongeAPI generation | Plugin location | Compatibility example from Sponge documentation |
|---|---|---|
| SpongeAPI 7 and earlier | /mods |
One documented 7.x entry targets Minecraft 1.12.2 with minimum Java 8 |
| SpongeAPI 8 and later | /plugins |
One documented 8.x entry targets Minecraft 1.16.5 with Java 8; a 9.x example targets Minecraft 1.18 with Java 17 |
These are compatibility examples, not a promise that every build in a major line supports every listed version. Read each plugin’s compatibility notes, put the file in the directory required by that API generation, and restart after adding it.

Allow external players to connect
Players on the same local network may be able to connect without router changes. Players outside it generally require an inbound firewall rule and router port forwarding to the server machine. Mojang’s Java server setup guidance identifies TCP port 25565 as the default; change the port in server.properties only when you have a reason, and forward the same port if you change it.
- Give the server computer a stable local address so a forwarding rule does not point to a different device later.
- Allow the Java process or selected server port through the host firewall.
- Forward the selected port from the router to the server computer’s local address.
- Have an outside player test the connection using the public address, while local players use the appropriate local address.
Do not expose administrative services unnecessarily. Run the server under a dedicated operating-system account where practical, restrict file permissions, and keep the Java runtime and server software updated within the compatibility limits of your mods or plugins.
Back up before every change
Stop the server cleanly before copying its world and configuration files. Keep automated backups outside the live directory, retain more than one restore point, and test a planned Minecraft, Forge, Sponge, plugin or mod update on a copy of the world first. A backup that has never been restored is only an assumption, so periodically verify that it can be opened by a separate test instance.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
Troubleshooting the first failed launch
The server stops immediately and mentions the EULA
Open the eula.txt in the directory that the launcher actually used. Set eula=true only after reading and accepting the license, then restart. Forge may generate its EULA in the Forge run directory rather than the directory where you stored the installer.

“Unsupported class version” or a similar Java error
The Java executable starting the server is older or otherwise incompatible with the server build. Run java -version in the same shell or script that starts the server, then install or select the major version required by that exact Minecraft, Forge or Sponge release. A newer Java is not automatically a valid substitute for an older supported one.
Forge, Sponge or a mod fails during loading
- Confirm the Minecraft version printed by the server matches the mod, plugin or loader release.
- For SpongeForge, verify both the Forge branch and SpongeForge build.
- For Sponge plugins, verify the SpongeAPI generation and directory: older API versions use
/mods, while API 8 and later use/plugins. - Remove the newest addition and restart from the clean backup to isolate the incompatible file.
Spigot or CraftBukkit cannot be found or behaves unexpectedly
Check that the start command names the actual JAR produced by BuildTools and that you copied it into the intended server directory. Rebuild the exact revision if the artifact is missing. Avoid replacing it with an unverified download; an outdated or malicious JAR can create problems that look like configuration failures.
Players cannot connect from outside the house
Verify the server is listening on the configured port, the operating-system firewall allows it, and the router forwards that same port to the correct local address. Test from an external connection rather than assuming that a successful local connection proves Internet access.
Choosing among the four options
Use CraftBukkit or Spigot when your content is primarily Bukkit-compatible plugins and you want a plugin-oriented server without Forge. Choose Forge when the defining feature is a Forge mod or modpack. Choose SpongeForge when you need both Forge mods and Sponge’s plugin API. Choose SpongeVanilla when you want Sponge plugins on a vanilla-based server and do not need Forge mods.
