What curl is and why Ubuntu’s package is the normal choice
curl is a command-line tool for transferring data with URL syntax. It is commonly used from a terminal to contact web services, download resources, inspect HTTP responses, and automate network requests.

Installing that package through APT keeps the program aligned with your Ubuntu release and lets APT resolve its runtime requirements, including the libcurl runtime and zlib. For an ordinary Ubuntu installation, there is no need to find a separate binary or installer.
Before you install
- You need access to an Ubuntu terminal. This can be a desktop Terminal window, a text console, an SSH session, a virtual machine, a container, or another Ubuntu environment.
- The system must be able to reach the configured Ubuntu package repositories so APT can refresh its indexes and download packages.
- Your account needs permission to run commands with
sudo. When sudo asks for a password, enter the password for your Ubuntu account; the characters will not be shown while you type. - Run the verification command in the same environment where you performed the installation. Installing curl on a host does not automatically install it inside a separate container, subsystem, or remote machine.
Install curl step by step
1. Open a terminal
Open your Ubuntu terminal and work from the shell prompt. You do not need to download a file from a website first.

2. Refresh APT’s package indexes
sudo apt updateapt update retrieves current package metadata from the repositories configured for this Ubuntu system. It does not install curl by itself. Let it finish before starting the installation. If APT reports a repository, DNS, or network error, resolve that problem before proceeding; otherwise the local package indexes may be incomplete or stale.
3. Install the package named curl
sudo apt install curlThe package name is exactly curl, in lowercase. APT calculates the required dependency changes and displays a confirmation summary. Review the packages it plans to install, then confirm when prompted.

If sudo requests your password, enter it and press Enter. If APT asks whether to continue, answer with the confirmation requested by the prompt. A successful transaction downloads the Ubuntu package and any required runtime dependencies, then places the curl executable where the active Ubuntu environment can use it.
5. Verify the installation
curl --versionA working installation prints the installed curl and libcurl build information, rather than an error that the command cannot be found. The output also identifies the build’s supported features and protocols; the exact lines vary with the Ubuntu release and package build.

What APT installs
The curl package is the command-line program. Ubuntu’s package metadata lists runtime dependencies such as the libcurl runtime and zlib. You normally do not need to install those packages individually: APT resolves and installs the dependency set required by the curl package selected for your release.
Because the package is maintained in Ubuntu’s archives, updates are delivered through the repositories and update pockets enabled on your system. The build you receive is therefore determined by the Ubuntu release, repository configuration, and the updates available when you install or update it.
Which curl version will you get?
Do not put a fixed curl version into a normal installation command. Ubuntu publishes release-specific package builds, and security or updates pockets can revise the package within a release. Ubuntu’s package listings show these versions in the captured metadata:

Those figures identify package versions shown for the corresponding release listings, not a promise that every machine will display the same value indefinitely. Once updates are published, an installed system can receive a newer revision while remaining on the same Ubuntu release. The authoritative value for your machine is the version printed by curl --version after installation.

Installing on Ubuntu 22.04 or 24.04
Ubuntu 22.04 is the Jammy release and Ubuntu 24.04 is Noble. The installation procedure is the same on both:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install curl
curl --versionDo not substitute the package version shown in a listing for the package name. APT should select the build compatible with your enabled repositories, architecture, and current updates. If you are following instructions written for a different Ubuntu release, keep the commands above and allow your own repositories to choose the package revision.
Troubleshooting installation problems
APT says it cannot locate the package
First, run sudo apt update again and read the complete output. Then check the following:
- Confirm that the system is actually Ubuntu and identify which release it is running.
- Check that the configured Ubuntu repositories are enabled and reachable.
- Verify network connectivity, DNS resolution, and any proxy or firewall rules that affect APT.
- Make sure the update operation completed successfully rather than ending with repository errors.
“Unable to locate package” generally means APT does not have a usable package index for the configured sources. Installing a random curl binary does not fix a repository configuration problem and can create a separate update and compatibility burden.

The package download fails
Read the repository URL and connection error shown by APT. A temporary mirror, DNS, or network failure may require correcting connectivity and rerunning sudo apt update before retrying sudo apt install curl. If the output identifies an authentication, signature, or repository-configuration problem, fix that repository issue rather than ignoring the warning.
curl --version is still not found
Inspect the installation output for an error, including an aborted confirmation or a failed dependency transaction. Then verify that you are running the check in the same active environment where APT installed the package. Common boundaries include a host system versus a container, a local shell versus an SSH session, and one subsystem versus another. Each environment has its own package database and executable path.

If the command still cannot be found after a transaction that appeared successful, rerun the installation command and examine every line of APT’s output for a package or configuration failure. The verification command should be treated as the final test, not assumed from the absence of an obvious error.
Sudo authentication fails
Sudo requires the password for an account authorized to administer the Ubuntu system. A mistyped password, an account without sudo rights, or a restricted administrative environment prevents the package operation. Ask the system administrator to install curl or grant the appropriate administrative access; do not attempt to bypass the system’s privilege controls.

Remove curl, or remove it and its configuration
Remove the package but retain configuration files
sudo apt remove curlUse this when you want to uninstall the curl package while leaving its configuration files in place for possible future use.

sudo apt purge curlCanonical’s Ubuntu command-line guidance documents apt purge <package> for removing a package together with its configuration files. APT will show the planned changes before it proceeds. Purging curl does not mean that every unrelated package on the system is removed; review the transaction summary and confirm only the changes you intend.
Why the Ubuntu repository method is preferable for most systems
Ubuntu’s APT package is the clearest default because curl is already packaged by Ubuntu. APT handles dependency resolution, selects a build intended for the release you are running, and supplies subsequent package revisions through the repositories you maintain. It also gives you a consistent way to install, remove, and audit the package using the system package manager.
A third-party binary can differ in release compatibility, dependency handling, trust model, and update process. Those properties depend on the publisher and the specific binary, so they are not uniform alternatives. Use one only when you have a concrete compatibility requirement that Ubuntu’s package cannot meet and you understand how that binary will be verified and updated. For a standard Ubuntu desktop, server, virtual machine, or development environment, the two-command APT installation avoids those extra decisions.
