Before online play or Steam file verification, restore the vanilla files. These steps prevent most failed launches, corrupted data, and avoidable account risk.
What “safe modding” means for Dark Souls
Dark Souls mods are not interchangeable. A file made for the original Prepare to Die Edition can be incompatible with Dark Souls Remastered, and a loader that works with Dark Souls III does not automatically support Dark Souls II or Remastered. “Safe” therefore has three parts:

- Technical safety: the loader, mod and installed game build match, and you can return to an untouched game.
- Data safety: your saves and clean game files are backed up before anything is replaced or redirected.
- Account safety: data-changing mods are used offline and vanilla files are restored before normal online play.
No modding workflow can guarantee how every FromSoftware account or anti-cheat system will react. Follow the individual mod’s current instructions and the game service’s current rules. The precautions below are operational safeguards, not a promise that any third-party modification is risk-free.
Identify your exact game before downloading anything
Write down the edition shown in your library and the installed executable or build version. The relevant categories are the original Dark Souls/Prepare to Die Edition, Dark Souls Remastered, Dark Souls II, and Dark Souls III. A mod author may support only one of these, or only a specific update of one edition.

Build compatibility matters because a game update can change executable addresses, archive formats or data hashes. Mod Engine documentation notes that each mod targets a specific game version and that an update can break an otherwise correct installation. If a download page does not identify the supported edition and build, treat that as a warning and do not guess.

Prepare a clean, recoverable installation
Back up saves first
Copy your Dark Souls save folder to a location outside the game directory and label the copy with the date and game edition. Keep the backup untouched. For randomized runs, use a separate save whenever possible; this prevents randomized progression from being mixed with a normal character.
Keep a clean game directory
Start with a fresh, untouched installation whenever a tool requests one. Do not stack a new data mod on top of old files from another project. If a utility changes archives or executable-adjacent files, keep a separate clean copy of the game directory or be prepared to restore it through the tool and then verify the files in Steam.

Get a loader from its official project page, or get a mod from the author’s verified page on the distribution site named by that author. Mod Engine’s safety guidance says its signed Windows application is officially distributed only from modengine.app. An unsigned mirror, repack or “cracked” launcher is untrusted even if its file name looks familiar. Scan downloads with your normal security software and do not disable Windows protections merely to run an unknown executable.

Remove conflicting mods
Before installing, disable other active data mods. The Dark Souls Remastered Randomizer specifically warns that overlapping MSB, PARAM, event, AI and SFX changes can conflict. A clean baseline makes it possible to tell whether a failure comes from the new mod instead of an older file.
Choose the installation method that matches the mod

Do not mix procedures. A manager that expects drag-and-drop files is not configured by adding a TOML entry, and a randomizer that patches archives is not equivalent to a redirection loader.
Install a Mod Engine 2-style setup
Use this method only when the mod author names Mod Engine 2 (or the currently recommended successor) and confirms your edition and build. The Mod Engine 2 project is legacy software: its README says development is discontinued and that future work is being done in me3. A newer mod may require different instructions.

- Create a dedicated mod folder. Inside the loader’s mod directory, make a clearly named folder for the project, such as
MyMod. Keeping each project separate makes removal and conflict checking easier. - Unpack the mod into that folder. Preserve the directory structure supplied by the author. If the archive contains a
chr,map,regulation.binor similar path, do not flatten it into an arbitrary folder. - Edit the TOML configuration. Open the game’s Mod Engine configuration and add the named mod folder to the enabled list exactly as the README describes. Check spelling, quotation marks and path separators; a configuration that points one level too high can make the loader appear to do nothing.
- Launch through the Mod Engine launcher. Start the launcher, then the game, rather than using the normal Steam Play button for the modded session. The project explains that the launcher keeps the mod, loader and game detached; launching the game directly from Steam therefore produces a vanilla instance.
- Test in a safe area. Confirm one obvious, documented change before progressing. If the game crashes, close it, disable the mod folder in TOML and return to the clean baseline instead of adding more files.
Keep the loader and mod versions together. If the game updated after the mod was released, assume compatibility is broken until the author confirms otherwise. Do not replace executable files with unofficial “fixes” from random file hosts.

Use the legacy Drag and Drop Mod Manager carefully
The Nexus documentation for version 1.0.5 describes a simple Steam-oriented workflow: start with a fresh, untouched installation, drag the mod’s raw files onto the manager, and launch Dark Souls through the manager. It says the utility automatically uninstalls the mods after the session and recommends leaving the manager open until the game closes.
- Restore or reinstall a clean Steam copy of the game.
- Open the manager before launching the game.
- Drag the raw mod files onto the manager window, following the mod author’s file layout.
- Start Dark Souls from the manager, not from a separate shortcut.
- Exit the game normally, then wait for the manager to complete its automatic removal before closing the manager.
This tool’s page was last updated on 23 February 2018. That age does not prove it is unsafe, but it does mean current game updates and Windows behavior may not be covered. Prefer a maintained alternative whenever the mod author specifies one. If the manager closes unexpectedly or files remain modified, stop, restore a clean backup or use Steam’s file verification only after the mod has been removed.
Install the Dark Souls Remastered Randomizer
The Randomizer has a more controlled data-mod workflow than a generic file drop. Its documented prerequisites are Windows, Dark Souls Remastered on Steam, a clean unpacked installation and no other active data mods.
Before activation
- Close the game and any other mod manager.
- Back up saves and choose a separate save for randomized characters when possible.
- Ensure the Remastered installation is clean and unpacked. Remove or restore conflicting MSB, PARAM, event, AI and SFX changes.
- Keep the computer offline for the randomized session.
Generate and activate a seed
- Select the game directory in the Randomizer.
- Verify the directory. Let the tool check that it points to the expected Remastered installation.
- Import game data while the installation is clean. Do not import from a directory already changed by another data mod.
- Choose categories for the randomization.
- Enter or generate a seed. Record the seed so the run can be reproduced or identified later.
- Generate the package. Wait for the process to finish before opening the game.
- Activate the package. The tool verifies source and patch hashes, creates per-seed backups and rolls back a failed activation. It refuses to overwrite files that changed unexpectedly.
- Launch normally while offline. The Randomizer documentation explicitly instructs users to use offline mode.
Use Restore Vanilla before changing seeds, importing another seed, verifying Steam files or installing a different data mod. This order matters: Steam verification should see the original files, not a randomizer patch.

Online play, bans and account precautions
Keep modified sessions offline. Mod Engine’s safety documentation describes the application as intended for offline, single-player games and says it does not support online or competitive titles. The Randomizer likewise states, “Use the mod in OFFLINE MODE.” These instructions reduce exposure but are not a guarantee against every account or anti-cheat policy.
- Disconnect through the game’s own offline option or the platform’s supported offline mode before loading a data-changing mod.
- Do not enter online matchmaking, invasions, co-op or leaderboards with modified files.
- Exit the game, restore vanilla files, and only then reconnect for an ordinary session.
- Keep a separate save for randomized or otherwise altered runs; never assume a modded save is safe to carry into an unmodified online character.
If a mod page gives stricter instructions than these, follow the stricter instructions. If you are unwilling to maintain separate offline and vanilla states, do not install a data-changing mod.

The mod does nothing
- Confirm the exact edition and installed build against the mod’s requirements.
- Check that the mod is in the folder named by the loader and that the TOML entry points to that folder, not its parent.
- Make sure you launched through the required loader or manager. Direct Steam launch intentionally produces a vanilla instance in the Mod Engine 2 workflow.
- Disable every other data mod and test again from a clean installation.
The loader cannot activate
The official Mod Engine guide says activation cannot occur until the tool is attached to the running game process. Start the game as instructed, select the correct process, and only then toggle the mod. If the tool cannot access the process, try administrator privileges. Do not disable security software globally; use a trusted, correctly signed build and investigate the specific block.

A game update broke the setup
Return to the supported target build only when that is legitimately possible and allowed by your platform, or wait for the mod author to update the project. The support page gives no fixed update time. Do not download a replacement executable from an unverified source to force an old mod to run.

The game crashes or Steam reports altered files
Stop launching the mod. Use the mod’s own restore or uninstall function first. For the Randomizer, run Restore Vanilla; for a manager, allow its cleanup to finish; for a redirection loader, remove the mod from the TOML configuration and leave the base files untouched. Once vanilla is restored, verify Steam files or reinstall from a clean copy. If the crash persists, restore the save backup only after confirming that the save itself is the problem.
The manager closed before cleanup
Do not start another modded session. Compare the game directory with your clean backup, remove leftover files according to the manager’s instructions, and verify the installation after restoration. Keep the manager open until the game has fully exited on future sessions.
Restore vanilla and return to normal play
- End the modded session completely. Close the game and its loader or manager.
- Use the tool’s restore function. For the Remastered Randomizer, choose Restore Vanilla. For a drag-and-drop manager, let automatic uninstall complete. For Mod Engine 2, stop launching through the modded launcher and remove the mod folder from the TOML configuration.
- Check the game directory. Look for files that the mod author says were replaced rather than redirected. Restore them from your clean backup if necessary.
- Verify Steam files only after restoration. Verification can overwrite or redownload files, so it should never be the first step while a randomizer or other data patch is active.
- Reconnect only after vanilla is confirmed. Launch the unmodified game once, confirm normal behavior, and use your ordinary online save rather than a randomized save.
Keep your clean directory copy and dated save backup until you have completed a normal, unmodified session successfully. They are your fastest recovery path if a later update or mod experiment fails.
A practical safe-install checklist
- ☐ Edition identified: original/Prepare to Die, Remastered, Dark Souls II or Dark Souls III.
- ☐ Installed build recorded and matched to the mod page.
- ☐ Save backup made outside the game directory.
- ☐ Clean installation available, with conflicting data mods removed.
- ☐ Loader or manager downloaded from its official project or verified author page.
- ☐ Installation method followed exactly: TOML redirection, drag-and-drop manager or Randomizer workflow.
- ☐ First launch tested offline in a separate save when practical.
- ☐ Vanilla restored before Steam verification or online play.
Following this sequence keeps the reversible parts reversible: the mod lives in a known folder or controlled patch, the save has an untouched backup, and the online game sees restored files.
