You can install the third-party Dolphin UWP port on Xbox by enabling Developer Mode and sideloading its x64 MSIX package through Xbox Device Portal. The documented setup does not support running Dolphin in ordinary Retail Mode. The community guide recommends keeping game files and Dolphin’s user folder on a properly configured USB drive.
What you need before installing
- An Xbox One-family console or Xbox Series X|S with Developer Mode enabled.
- A signed-in user account to deploy the app. Microsoft’s UWP applications FAQ states: “You must have a user signed in to deploy an app.”
- A computer and access to Xbox Device Portal for sideloading.
- The current Dolphin UWP x64 MSIX package, plus USB storage configured according to the current setup instructions if you plan to store games and Dolphin data externally.
Dolphin UWP is a third-party Xbox/UWP port of Dolphin for GameCube and Wii emulation; its project says it is not associated with Nintendo. Consult the Dolphin UWP project and the maintained XboxEmulationHub devmodewiki installation guide for current release and setup information. Package names and release mirrors can change, so verify the live project release source and its instructions before downloading. The community guide reports that it was tested on 2025-05-05; that date does not establish that a particular package or mirror is still current.
Install Dolphin UWP through Device Portal
- Enable Developer Mode. Follow Microsoft’s current Xbox Developer Mode activation instructions. Dev Home indicates that the console is in Developer Mode.
- Open Xbox Device Portal. Use the console’s Device Portal from a computer on the network, following Microsoft’s activation and connection instructions. Sign in on the console before deploying.
- Get the current x64 MSIX. The guide describes an asset named like
DolphinWinRT_*_x64.msix. Confirm the current package and release instructions from the maintained project source rather than relying on an old mirror or copied asset name. - Sideload the package. In Device Portal, use its app-installation controls to upload and deploy the MSIX. The guide describes current store builds as a single package with no separate dependency-installation step; check the instructions that accompany the build you download.
- Launch Dolphin from Dev Home. Once deployment completes, open the app from the console’s Developer Mode environment.
Set up game paths and Dolphin’s user folder on USB
The community guide recommends a USB-first setup for game files and Dolphin data. It recommends NTFS and warns that formatting and Xbox USB permissions must be configured correctly; an arbitrary drive should not be assumed ready to use. Follow the guide’s current USB formatting and permissions instructions before copying files.
- Arrange your game files. Put them in folders on the USB drive—for example, separate folders for GameCube and Wii games.
- Add the game directory in Dolphin. Open Dolphin settings with the controller’s View/Select button and add the folder containing your games as a game path.
- Create the user folder. Make a folder named
Dolphinat the USB drive’s root. - Set the user-folder path. In Dolphin’s Paths & Folders settings, add that USB
Dolphinfolder as the user folder. The guide says Dolphin creates folders such asLoad,Config,GC, andWiithere when a game is first launched.
USB storage or internal storage?
| Setup | What the guide describes | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| USB-first (recommended by the guide) | Store game folders and the Dolphin user folder on USB; the guide recommends NTFS and correct Xbox USB permissions. | Requires properly formatting and configuring the drive. |
| Internal storage with FTP | The guide describes transferring files by FTP to the app’s LocalFolder[FULLNAME]LocalCache path. |
The guide discourages this approach because of storage limitations and warns that an incorrect uninstall can leave data that is difficult or impossible to delete. These are guide-reported cautions, not independently verified findings. |
Which Xbox models are suitable?
| Console family | Project guidance | Practical expectation |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X|S | The Dolphin UWP project recommends Series X|S. | These are the project-recommended Xbox consoles, but the available sources do not establish performance for individual games. |
| Xbox One, Xbox One S, Xbox One X | The project lists these as minimum hardware and cautions that games may not run well. | Compatibility does not guarantee smooth play. No controlled performance benchmarks or game-by-game frame-rate guarantees are established by the cited material. |
Return the console to Retail Mode
Dolphin’s documented setup requires Developer Mode; switching back to Retail Mode is not a way to keep using Dolphin there. Microsoft documents a “Leave developer mode” control in Dev Home for returning the console to Retail Mode. See Microsoft’s Developer Mode guidance for the current process.

Optional: Netplay considerations
The community guide characterizes GameCube Netplay as generally stable and Wii Netplay as more experimental; these are guide-reported expectations, not guarantees. It recommends that players use the same game, matching region and revision, preferably identical game dumps, and the same Dolphin version. Ethernet is recommended because latency matters. The guide says a traversal server avoids router port forwarding, while direct connection requires it; strict NAT may still cause connection problems. See the guide’s Netplay instructions for its current details.
