On Debian, install FFmpeg from the configured Debian repositories with sudo apt install ffmpeg, verify the installed build, then configure and supervise an FFmpeg process that sends a compatible video and audio stream to YouTube Live. Installation alone does not make a stream work: the input, encoder, bitrate, network, stream key, and YouTube ingest settings all have to line up.
Install FFmpeg from Debian’s repositories
Debian’s documented installation route is its packaged FFmpeg. Run these commands in a terminal on the Debian host that will stream:
sudo apt updaterefreshes the package indexes.sudo apt install ffmpeginstalls FFmpeg and its packaged tools from the repositories configured for your system.ffmpeg -versiondisplays the installed version and build information.ffprobe -versionchecks that the media-inspection tool is available as well.
Debian’s package listing describes the package as including ffmpeg, ffplay, ffprobe, and qt-faststart. See Debian’s FFmpeg wiki and the Debian package listing.
Check your Debian release and build
Package versions vary by Debian release and change over time. When accessed on October 3, 2026, Debian’s package listing showed 7:7.1.5-0+deb13u1 for trixie and 7:5.1.9-0+deb12u1 for bookworm; those are dated package-listing observations, not version targets. Check your installed build with ffmpeg -version instead of assuming a version from another Debian system.

If an encoder you need appears unavailable, inspect ffmpeg -encoders and the build information first. Available encoders and acceleration options can depend on the package build, architecture, and system; do not assume that every Debian installation includes a particular codec or hardware-encoding path. Debian’s release-specific package versions are listed at packages.debian.org.
Choose a YouTube-compatible output
Before constructing a command, decide on the source, output resolution and frame rate, codec and encoding method, audio, and ingest protocol. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP, for encoder contributions. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. For ordinary SDR video, YouTube recommends Rec. 709 color and 8-bit depth; HDR has separate guidance. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings and make the FFmpeg output match the mode and encoder you actually use.

Match bitrate to codec and video mode
Bitrate recommendations depend on both codec and output mode. For H.264, YouTube lists these examples:
| H.264 output | YouTube recommended bitrate | YouTube minimum bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 4K at 30 fps | 42 Mbps | 11 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published encoder settings, not a guarantee of quality or a measurement of your connection. Its recommended values differ for H.265 and AV1, so use the row for your selected codec and mode in the YouTube encoder settings. Your upload connection must sustain the chosen rate with headroom; a connection that only occasionally reaches the target is not a reliable basis for an unattended stream.

Choose RTMPS or HLS for the workflow
RTMPS is the most directly aligned choice when you need a low-latency continuous contribution and YouTube’s workflow supports it. YouTube describes HLS as higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments rather than one continuous stream. HLS can still be appropriate when its workflow and added latency fit your use case. Compare the available options in YouTube’s encoder guidance and live streaming protocol information.
Configure FFmpeg and YouTube Live
There is no single FFmpeg command that is correct for every Debian build, input type, codec, and YouTube Live mode. Build the command around your actual input and the encoder available in ffmpeg -encoders. For a file-based stream, verify the file and its audio/video streams with ffprobe before sending it. For a live 24/7 process, ensure the source remains available for the entire run; a finite file reaching its end is not a continuously available input unless your chosen playback method loops it.

- Set up the YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and select the supported ingest protocol and stream settings. YouTube’s interface labels can change; use the current stream configuration shown for your account.
- Obtain the stream key and ingest address. Treat the key as a password. Do not publish it in a script repository, screenshot, shared shell transcript, or command history. Store it in a protected configuration mechanism appropriate to your host and restrict access to that configuration.
- Select the input and encoder. Use a valid local file or other supported source, and choose an encoder that the installed build lists. Match output codec, resolution, frame rate, audio codec, and bitrate to the selected YouTube mode.
- Set the stream timing and color correctly. Use CBR where applicable, a two-second keyframe interval (never over four seconds), and the appropriate color settings. For ordinary SDR, YouTube recommends Rec. 709 and 8-bit; do not apply SDR settings blindly to HDR.
- Send a test stream before relying on it. Confirm that YouTube receives both picture and sound and that the stream health indicators and status messages are acceptable before leaving the process unattended.
Consult the YouTube encoder settings for current ingest details and codec-specific rates. A successful local FFmpeg launch only confirms that the process started; it does not confirm that YouTube accepted the stream or that its health is good.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep the stream running unattended
A foreground FFmpeg process in an interactive terminal stops if that session or host stops. For a long-running Debian setup, run the command under a service manager such as systemd, configure a suitable restart policy, send logs to a location an operator checks, and arrange for the service to start after a host reboot. These are operational recommendations; a restart policy supervises the process but cannot repair a bad input, invalid key, insufficient upload capacity, incompatible encoder settings, or a YouTube-side problem.

Test the complete path before calling it 24/7-ready
- Check that the input continues to play or capture as intended, including what happens when a file reaches its end.
- Verify picture and audio at YouTube, not only in FFmpeg’s local output.
- Run long enough to observe encoding load and whether the network sustains the selected bitrate.
- Monitor YouTube stream health and status messages during the test, as YouTube advises.
- Perform a controlled FFmpeg process restart and confirm the service manager behavior and YouTube recovery path.
- Keep the stream key private; rotate it if it is exposed.
Do not treat a restart loop as proof of reliability. It can repeatedly relaunch a process that still cannot read its input, authenticate, encode, or deliver enough data.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
ffmpeg: command not found |
FFmpeg is not installed or the expected executable is not on the shell’s path. | Run the APT installation steps, then check ffmpeg -version. |
| The requested encoder is unavailable | The installed build does not list that encoder. | Inspect ffmpeg -encoders and ffmpeg -version; do not assume every Debian build has the same codec support. |
| FFmpeg exits or reports input errors | The source path, file, permissions, or source availability may be wrong. | Inspect the input with ffprobe, verify access as the service account, and test the exact source outside the supervisor. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | The ingest address, protocol, stream key, or output configuration may not match the selected YouTube stream. | Check the current YouTube stream configuration and protected key source; rotate a key that may have been exposed. |
| Stream health degrades or drops | Upload capacity may be insufficient, or bitrate, codec, or other encoder settings may not match the stream mode. | Compare the actual output against YouTube’s codec-specific settings and confirm sustained upload headroom; monitor YouTube’s health messages. |
| The process restarts repeatedly | The supervisor can restart FFmpeg, but cannot resolve a persistent input, key, network, encoder, or YouTube-side fault. | Read the service logs and correct the underlying failure before relying on automatic restarts. |
