How to Install FFmpeg on Ubuntu Server for a Continuous YouTube Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install FFmpeg from Ubuntu’s configured repositories with sudo apt update and sudo apt install ffmpeg, then verify it with ffmpeg -version. That installs the encoder, not a continuous stream: you also need a continuing video source, a YouTube stream URL and key, suitable output settings, and a supervisor such as systemd to restart the process after a failure or reboot.

Install FFmpeg from Ubuntu’s repositories

The simplest starting point is the FFmpeg package provided by your Ubuntu release. Ubuntu documents apt update for refreshing package metadata and apt install for installing packages. The available FFmpeg version depends on the Ubuntu release and enabled repositories; check the installed build rather than assuming every server has the same version. Ubuntu Server documentation and the Ubuntu package index provide release-specific context.

  1. Connect to the server over SSH and update package metadata: sudo apt update.
  2. Install FFmpeg: sudo apt install ffmpeg.
  3. Verify the executable and build details: ffmpeg -version.
  4. If you need to confirm an encoder is available in this build, list encoders with ffmpeg -encoders and check for the one your workflow requires.

Google Cloud also uses sudo apt install ffmpeg as an example in its encoder setup guidance: Google Cloud FFmpeg setup. Avoid adding a third-party PPA just to obtain a newer build unless you have a specific feature requirement and have checked the repository’s provenance, update policy, and compatibility. Ubuntu advises users to research non-standard repositories before adding them.

Prepare the source and YouTube stream

Make sure the input can continue

A stream can only continue while FFmpeg has a readable source. For prerecorded content, configure the input to repeat or provide a playlist that remains available. For a camera, capture card, or network feed, the source device or feed must stay available, and its reconnect behavior matters as much as FFmpeg’s. A community example demonstrates looping local media, but it is an operator example rather than a universal command recipe: community FFmpeg operations example.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Get the ingest URL and stream key

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or select the live stream.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key for the chosen ingestion protocol.
  3. Use those values in FFmpeg’s output configuration. Keep the key private: it authorizes an encoder to send to the stream. YouTube’s connection workflow explains where the URL and key are used: Connect your encoder to YouTube Live.

Do not publish the real key in a script repository, screenshot, or log. Store it in a permissions-restricted configuration or environment file instead of a world-readable unit file. If you expose it, regenerate the key in YouTube Studio.

Choose an ingestion protocol and encoder settings

For a conventional FFmpeg stream, RTMPS is the straightforward default. YouTube recommends RTMPS for this ingestion mode. HLS is a separate protocol, useful for cases such as HDR or codecs not supported through RTMP; it uses HTTPS and segmented output, has higher latency, and requires different playlist and segment configuration. Do not paste HLS settings into an RTMP/RTMPS output command. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and HLS ingestion setup.

Setting YouTube guidance for RTMP/RTMPS What to check
Video codec H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 Confirm your FFmpeg build supports the selected encoder and that the chosen codec is supported by your ingestion path.
Audio codec AAC or MP3 For stereo, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.
Rate control Constant bitrate Use a stable bitrate the server’s sustained upload can support.
Keyframes Every 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds Set the encoder’s keyframe interval to match the output frame rate and target interval.
Frame rate Up to 60 fps Keep the output frame rate within the source and encoder’s capabilities.
H.264 bitrate examples 1080p30: 5 Mbps recommended, 4 Mbps minimum; 720p60: 8 Mbps recommended, 3 Mbps minimum These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee of available bandwidth on your server.

Choose a bitrate below the server’s measured, sustained upload capacity, leaving room for normal network variation. Test with representative footage, including its motion and audio, and check the stream preview and health messages in Live Control Room before relying on a long-running stream. YouTube’s guidance recommends testing and monitoring stream health.

Run FFmpeg continuously with systemd

Use systemd to start the encoder at boot and restart it if the process exits. A restart policy supervises the process; it does not guarantee that the host, network, source, credentials, or YouTube ingest will remain available. Follow Ubuntu’s systemd service guidance and use a dedicated, unprivileged account where practical.

  1. Create or select a dedicated account and give it access only to the source media and configuration it needs.
  2. Place the FFmpeg command and protected credentials in a configuration arrangement readable by that account but not by other users. Do not put a real key in a publicly accessible script or a world-readable unit file.
  3. Create a systemd service unit that runs the FFmpeg command, sets the appropriate working directory and restart policy, and runs as the dedicated account. The exact command depends on the source, codec, and ingest protocol, so do not use a generic sample without adapting and testing it.
  4. Start the service and inspect its state with systemctl status your-stream.service.
  5. Read its recent logs with journalctl -u your-stream.service. Resolve errors before enabling the service to start at boot.
  6. Test recovery by stopping or restarting the process in a controlled window, then confirm both that systemd starts it again and that YouTube receives healthy audio and video.
  7. Once the test succeeds, enable the unit at boot with sudo systemctl enable your-stream.service.

Systemd’s “active” state only describes the local process. It does not prove that YouTube is receiving a valid stream or that viewers can watch it. Check the Live Control Room preview and health messages as well as the server logs. The YouTube documentation recommends testing and monitoring the stream: YouTube encoder setup and stream health.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • “ffmpeg: command not found” or installation fails: rerun sudo apt update, check that the package is available for the server’s Ubuntu release, and inspect the output of sudo apt install ffmpeg. Package versions and availability can differ by release and configured repositories.
  • The service exits immediately: inspect systemctl status your-stream.service and journalctl -u your-stream.service. Check the command, file paths, permissions, and whether the service account can read the media and configuration.
  • YouTube does not receive the stream: check the ingest URL, selected protocol, and stream key. Confirm that the server can reach the destination and that the key has not been changed or exposed.
  • Video or audio is unhealthy: compare the actual codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, and audio settings with YouTube’s encoder guidance. Confirm the input contains the expected tracks and that the FFmpeg build includes the required encoder.
  • Playback stutters or disconnects: measure sustained upload capacity, reduce the bitrate if needed, and check host and source availability. A recommended bitrate is not a promise that a particular network can sustain it.
  • The service restarts but the stream still fails: restarting a process cannot fix a missing source, invalid credentials, insufficient bandwidth, or an ingest-side problem. Inspect FFmpeg logs and YouTube’s stream-health messages to identify which part failed.
