Keep FFmpeg’s YouTube output session running and switch content inside a persistent filter graph. For clips you know in advance, FFmpeg’s concat filter can advance through configured segments with its next command. For runtime commands, put a ZeroMQ filter in the graph and send commands to supported filters. Neither approach can guarantee uninterrupted viewer playback: network or YouTube ingest problems can still interrupt the stream.
Choose a switching method
| Approach | Best for | Runtime flexibility | Main constraint |
|---|---|---|---|
| Preconfigured concat filter | A finite sequence of clips known before FFmpeg starts | Advance through configured segments with next |
Inputs must fit the graph and meet concat’s stream, timestamp, and format requirements. |
| Concat filter plus ZeroMQ | A prepared graph that needs external runtime commands | A client can issue supported filter commands | Requires an FFmpeg build with libzmq and command-capable filters; it does not document adding arbitrary inputs to a running command. |
| Separate switcher feeding one FFmpeg output | Open-ended changes or more complex transitions | Depends on the controller or switching layer | More system complexity; validate timestamps, audio, and the single streaming output. |
| Restart FFmpeg | Manual recovery or a full input reconfiguration | Change the command or inputs at restart | Stopping encoder content can disrupt or end the YouTube event, so this does not preserve one ongoing encoder session. |
For a prepared playlist, use the concat filter. For externally triggered changes among segments already in the graph, add ZeroMQ. If the source list must remain open-ended, use a controller or switcher that feeds one persistent FFmpeg output, and test it against your exact setup.
Prepare a fixed playlist with the concat filter
FFmpeg’s filter documentation says the concat filter joins synchronized audio and video segments in order. Its next command closes the current segment and steps to the next configured segment. This is advancement through a prepared sequence—not a documented way to inject a new arbitrary input file into a running FFmpeg process.
Check and normalize the inputs
Concat requires each segment to have the same number of streams of each type. Related audio and video should be concatenated together, and every segment must start at timestamp zero. Corresponding streams need compatible parameters. The filter can select a common pixel or sample format, but differing dimensions such as resolution need explicit conversion; differing frame rates can produce variable-frame-rate output.

Probe every clip before building the graph. Check its audio and video streams, dimensions, frame rate, channel layout, and starting timestamps. Decide on a common output resolution and frame rate, then normalize each input accordingly. The example below assumes two clips, each with one video and one audio stream, converted to 1920×1080 at 30 fps.
Build one persistent output command
ffmpeg -re -i clip1.mp4 -re -i clip2.mp4
-filter_complex "[0:v]scale=1920:1080,fps=30,setpts=PTS-STARTPTS[v0];[0:a]asetpts=PTS-STARTPTS[a0];[1:v]scale=1920:1080,fps=30,setpts=PTS-STARTPTS[v1];[1:a]asetpts=PTS-STARTPTS[a1];[v0][a0][v1][a1]concat=n=2:v=1:a=1[v][a]"
-map "[v]" -map "[a]"
-c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60 -b:v 5M -maxrate 5M -bufsize 10M
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMP_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"
This is an illustrative template, not a tested command. Confirm the installed FFmpeg build, each input’s stream layout, timestamps, target dimensions, bitrate, and YouTube stream-key configuration. The use of -re and the output options must suit the actual sources and setup; do not assume this command is valid unchanged for clips with different streams or formats.
Advance to the next configured segment
To trigger next while FFmpeg is running, the filter graph needs a command interface such as ZeroMQ. Address the concat filter instance and verify the installed version’s command syntax and response before relying on it during a live event. The FFmpeg documentation describes the command format as TARGET COMMAND [ARG].

Send runtime filter commands with ZeroMQ
FFmpeg’s ZeroMQ filter documentation describes zmq and azmq as pass-through filters that receive messages from a client and forward them to filters in the graph. The video zmq filter sits between video filters, and FFmpeg must be built with --enable-libzmq. Its documented default bind address is local TCP.
A ZeroMQ client can send supported commands to filters already in the graph—for example, to advance a configured concat filter. It is not a general hot-plug interface for adding arbitrary files to FFmpeg’s static command-line input list. If you need unrestricted source replacement, use a controller built on FFmpeg libraries or a separate switching or mixing layer that continues feeding the one streaming output. That architecture is an implementation recommendation, not a guarantee from FFmpeg or YouTube; validate its timing and audio behavior.
Why a concat demuxer or restart is different
FFmpeg’s concat FAQ distinguishes the concat filter, concat demuxer, and concat protocol. The filter is appropriate when re-encoding is needed; the demuxer can concatenate without re-encoding when the formats allow it. A static demuxer list can serve a prepared sequence, but it is not a runtime source-switch command.

Restarting FFmpeg is the straightforward fallback if you need to change its inputs or configuration completely. It stops the existing encoder session, however, and YouTube’s setup guidance says the event ends when you stop sending content. YouTube describes sending the encoder feed to the server URL with the stream key as the way to start the stream. See its live encoder setup instructions.
Set and verify YouTube ingest settings
YouTube’s published live encoder settings list RTMP and RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube recommends RTMPS, a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds.
| Output or audio format | YouTube’s published recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps, AV1 or H.265 | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps, H.264 | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps, AV1 or H.265 | 12 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps, H.264 | 17 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps, AV1 or H.265 | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps, H.264 | 8 Mbps |
| Stereo audio | 128 Kbps |
| 5.1 audio | 384 Kbps |
These are YouTube’s recommendations in its current published guidance, accessed October 3, 2026—not universal minimums. Choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain, and match the keyframe interval, codec, frame rate, and audio format to YouTube’s guidance and your encoder settings. Validate the switch before going live
- Confirm the installed FFmpeg build has
concat; if using ZeroMQ, confirm it was built with--enable-libzmq. Check the documentation for the installed version: online FFmpeg documentation is regenerated and may describe a newer revision. - Probe every clip. Confirm stream counts and types, dimensions, frame rates, channel layouts, and start timestamps; normalize mismatches in the filter graph.
- Check that audio and video are paired and ordered as intended, with deliberate segment durations and synchronized timestamps.
- Verify codec, CBR bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, and audio settings against YouTube’s current guidance and your available upload bandwidth.
- Run the exact switching procedure in a test event. Watch YouTube Live Control Room for stream-health warnings and confirm the transition and audio behave as intended.
- Keep the YouTube stream key private. YouTube treats it as a password-like credential that lets the encoder send its feed.
Troubleshoot common switching failures
The concat filter rejects a clip or the graph fails to initialize
Check whether each segment has the same number of audio and video streams and whether corresponding streams have compatible parameters. Convert different dimensions explicitly, align timestamps to zero, and handle missing or extra audio tracks deliberately rather than assuming the filter will reconcile them.
The transition has a timestamp gap, jump, or unexpected frame rate
Inspect the inputs’ start timestamps and frame rates. Reset segment timestamps as appropriate, normalize frame rates if a constant-rate output is required, and test the full sequence. The concat filter can produce variable-frame-rate output when source frame rates differ.
A ZeroMQ command does not advance the sequence
Verify that the FFmpeg build includes libzmq, that zmq is in the graph, and that the command targets the correct filter instance using the installed version’s syntax. The target must support the command, and the segment must already be part of the configured graph.

YouTube reports poor stream health or loses ingest
Check upload capacity, CBR bitrate, codec, keyframe interval, and audio settings against YouTube’s recommendations. Test again and monitor Live Control Room. A persistent local FFmpeg process cannot prevent network faults, ingest loss, YouTube processing changes, or account and event issues.
