1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a small Linux VPS, install Grafana Loki as a single binary (monolithic deployment), keep its listener private, and place an authenticating TLS reverse proxy in front of it if users or agents connect over the Internet. Download a configuration file that matches the Loki release, start Loki with that file, verify port 3100 and the metrics endpoint, then run it under systemd with restricted permissions.
Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
Docker Compose is convenient for evaluation and development. Use Helm when the VPS is actually hosting Kubernetes or when you need a Kubernetes-based scaling and upgrade path. Whichever method you choose, plan storage and retention before ingesting game-server or application logs: Loki has no built-in authentication layer, and the quickstart filesystem store is not a substitute for a tested backup strategy.

The operating environment should determine how Loki is installed. A conventional Linux VPS with no Kubernetes control plane is best served by the local package or release binary. Docker reduces host-level setup, while Helm belongs in a Kubernetes workflow.
| Method | Where it fits | Operational complexity | Persistence and scaling | Production guidance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Local package or release binary | Bare Linux VPS | Low once systemd and permissions are configured | Uses the VPS filesystem or a configured object-storage backend; scaling is normally one node unless you redesign the deployment | Natural starting point for a small, single-node stack |
| Docker or Docker Compose | Evaluation, testing, development, and repeatable local deployments | Low to moderate; you manage containers, mounts, upgrades, and backups | Data survives only if the configuration and storage directories are mounted persistently | Grafana’s Docker documentation recommends Helm or Tanka for production |
| Helm on Kubernetes | A VPS that is a Kubernetes node, or a managed Kubernetes service | Higher; Kubernetes, chart values, storage classes, and upgrades are additional responsibilities | Supports monolithic, microservices, and scalable deployment patterns; durable storage is configured through Kubernetes and Loki settings | Use monolithic mode for a small monitoring stack; use microservices mode when high availability and scalability are required |
The official local-install documentation is the reference for package and binary installation: Grafana Loki local installation. For containers, use the official Docker installation guide and its version-specific examples. Kubernetes users should follow the official Helm installation guide.

Prepare the Linux VPS
Confirm the operating environment
Use a supported 64-bit Linux distribution and update its packages before installing Loki. The installation pages document package installation with apt-get or dnf; the exact package name and repository instructions depend on the distribution and the Loki release you select.
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
On a distribution using DNF, use the equivalent update operation:
sudo dnf upgrade
Do not choose a Loki configuration from a different release than the binary. Loki’s schema and storage settings are version-sensitive, so download the loki-local-config.yaml associated with the same release line as the executable.
Create a service account and directories
A dedicated account prevents a logging service from running with full root privileges. The following layout keeps configuration, executable files, and data separate; adapt paths if your distribution has an established service layout.
sudo useradd --system --home /var/lib/loki --shell /usr/sbin/nologin loki
sudo install -d -o loki -g loki /etc/loki
sudo install -d -o loki -g loki /var/lib/loki
sudo install -d -o loki -g loki /var/log/loki
Give the service account read access to the configuration and write access only to the directories that Loki uses for its indexes, chunks, cache, or filesystem object store. Avoid making the entire VPS filesystem writable by the Loki user.
Plan disk, retention, and backups
Loki sizing depends on log-ingestion rate, retention duration, query concurrency, compression, and the storage backend. The installation documentation does not publish a universal CPU, memory, ingestion-rate, or retention number, so do not select a VPS from a made-up minimum specification.
- Estimate how many logs your game servers and other applications emit during normal and peak periods.
- Choose a retention period that fits the disk or object-storage budget.
- Reserve space for indexes, temporary files, and operating-system updates rather than filling the volume to its advertised capacity.
- Monitor disk growth and define what happens when storage approaches its limit.
- Back up the configuration and any data that must survive a VPS failure; test restoration before relying on the logs for incident response.
Install Loki from a package or release binary
Install through the Grafana package repository
The local installation guide documents installation through the Grafana package repository with apt-get or dnf. Follow the repository setup for your distribution, install the Loki package, and note where the package places the executable, configuration files, and service definition. Package names and repository commands can change between releases, so use the instructions for the release you are deploying rather than copying an older command from a blog.
Download a matching release binary
If you prefer a self-contained installation, download the Linux binary for the exact Loki version you intend to run, place it in a protected directory, and make it executable. The binary invocation documented by Grafana is:

./loki-linux-amd64 -config.file=loki-local-config.yaml
A typical VPS layout would place the executable under /usr/local/bin or /opt/loki, with the configuration under /etc/loki. After copying the files, set ownership so the service account can read the binary and configuration and write only to its configured data paths.
Download and inspect the local configuration
Download loki-local-config.yaml from the same Loki release documentation or release bundle as the binary. Before starting Loki, inspect these areas:

- Authentication: the local example may set
auth_enabled: false. That is appropriate only when an equivalent trusted network boundary protects the service; it is not an Internet authentication mechanism. - Schema and index settings: use a schema supported by the installed Loki version. Do not paste storage blocks from an older release without checking the current configuration reference.
- Object store: the quickstart demonstrates
filesystem, which writes data to local disk. Production deployments need an explicit durability and backup plan and may use an S3-compatible object store when a single VPS is no longer sufficient. - Retention: select and verify retention settings deliberately. Retention affects disk growth, query availability, and backup volume.
Keep the original file as a rollback copy, but do not leave multiple similarly named configurations where a service operator could start the wrong one.
Start Loki and make it persistent with systemd
Run a foreground test first
Run Loki manually as the service account before creating an unattended service. This exposes YAML errors, missing directories, and permission problems immediately.
sudo -u loki /opt/loki/loki-linux-amd64
-config.file=/etc/loki/loki-local-config.yaml
Read the startup output. A successful process should remain running instead of exiting with a configuration or filesystem error. Stop this test with Ctrl+C after you have confirmed that the configuration loads.
Create a systemd unit
Create /etc/systemd/system/loki.service with paths that match your installation:

Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=5

WantedBy=multi-user.target
Reload systemd, start Loki, and enable it for boot:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now loki
sudo systemctl status loki
sudo journalctl -u loki -f
Restart=on-failure handles an unexpected process exit, but it does not repair a bad configuration. Always read the journal after editing YAML or changing storage permissions.

Verify the HTTP service and metrics
Loki exposes metrics at http://localhost:3100/metrics in the local installation documentation. From the VPS, check that endpoint without opening the port publicly:
curl http://127.0.0.1:3100/metrics
You should receive Prometheus-style metric text rather than a connection-refused error. If the command fails, check the following in order:
- Process state: run
systemctl status lokiand inspectjournalctl -u loki. - Port binding: confirm that the configured listen address and port match the address used by
curl. - Permissions: verify that the
lokiaccount can read the configuration and write every configured data directory. - Configuration version: ensure the YAML came from the same Loki release as the binary.
- Disk: check free space and filesystem errors before retrying.
Metrics confirm that the HTTP process is reachable; they do not prove that logs are arriving or that retention and backups are correct. Those checks require a log shipper and an end-to-end query.
Run Loki with Docker or Docker Compose
When containers make sense
Docker is useful when you are evaluating Loki, testing a configuration, or developing a repeatable stack. Grafana’s example uses the grafana/loki:3.7.0 image, mounts a configuration directory, and publishes port 3100. Treat that tag as the documented example, not a promise that it is the newest release; pin the version you have reviewed and keep the configuration aligned with it.
Minimal container layout
Place the version-matched configuration in a host directory and mount it read-only into the container. Keep the data directory on a persistent host volume. A Compose service follows this pattern:
services:
loki:
image: grafana/loki:3.7.0
command: -config.file=/etc/loki/loki-config.yaml
ports:
- "127.0.0.1:3100:3100"
volumes:
- ./config:/etc/loki:ro
- ./data:/loki
Binding to 127.0.0.1 keeps the container port off the public interface so a reverse proxy can be the only Internet-facing component. If another container must reach Loki over the Compose network, use the service name and container port rather than publishing 3100 to every interface.
The official quick-start tutorial uses single-binary mode and an object_store: filesystem configuration. It also demonstrates a Grafana container and Grafana Alloy collecting container logs and forwarding them to Loki: Loki quick-start tutorial. Use that pattern for learning, then replace the filesystem and exposure choices with a durability and security design before treating the stack as production infrastructure.
Container checks and upgrades
Use docker compose logs loki to read startup errors and curl http://127.0.0.1:3100/metrics on the host to verify the published endpoint. Back up the mounted configuration and data locations. Upgrade by changing the pinned image tag only after checking the release notes and configuration compatibility; never let an unpinned latest tag change the server unexpectedly.

Install Loki with Helm on Kubernetes
Choose Helm when the VPS is itself running Kubernetes or when you are deploying to a managed Kubernetes service. Grafana’s Helm documentation describes three broad deployment patterns:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Monolithic: the appropriate starting mode for a small monitoring stack.
- Microservices: separates Loki components for high availability and scalability.
- Scalable: a larger architecture whose operational details belong in a Kubernetes design review; Grafana notes that Simple Scalable Deployment is being deprecated.
Follow the chart’s current values and storage instructions rather than combining a chart from one release with a configuration copied from another. Define persistent volumes, resource requests, network policy, ingress authentication, and backup handling as Kubernetes objects or chart values. The Helm guide also links deployment guidance for Amazon EKS, Azure AKS, and Google GKE, but the same decision applies on a self-managed cluster: monolithic mode is simpler, while microservices mode adds moving parts in exchange for scale and availability.
Secure a public Linux VPS
Put authentication in front of Loki
“Grafana Loki does not come with any included authentication layer.” The official local-install documentation states this explicitly. Never expose an unauthenticated Loki listener directly to the Internet. Put an authenticating reverse proxy such as NGINX, or another supported proxy, in front of it and terminate TLS there.
The proxy should forward only to Loki’s private listener. Restrict the VPS firewall so port 3100 is reachable only from localhost, the proxy, or explicitly trusted networks. Public clients should connect to the proxy’s HTTPS hostname, not to http://server-address:3100.
Handle tenancy deliberately
In a multi-tenant or non-monolithic deployment, configure the required tenant header and ensure the proxy does not allow callers to invent or bypass tenant boundaries. Do not publish an unauthenticated gateway. Treat auth_enabled: false as a lab setting unless a network boundary provides equivalent protection.
Reduce the filesystem and network attack surface
- Run Loki as the dedicated non-login service account.
- Use least-privilege ownership on configuration, data, and log directories.
- Keep the configuration file out of publicly served web directories.
- Use TLS between remote agents, the proxy, and any external Grafana instance.
- Allow administrative SSH access only through the firewall policy you actually use, and monitor failed logins separately from application logs.
Choose storage and retention that you can operate
Filesystem storage for learning and small experiments
The quickstart’s filesystem object store is easy to understand: Loki writes data to the VPS disk. It is suitable for learning and small experiments when losing the node’s local data is acceptable. It still requires correct directory permissions and free-space monitoring.
Durable object storage for larger deployments
When a single VPS is no longer an adequate failure domain, configure an S3-compatible object store through Loki’s storage settings and use the Helm or local-install documentation for the exact schema supported by your release. Object storage does not remove the need for retention rules, access controls, lifecycle policies, or restore testing.
Watch the signals that matter
- Disk usage and rate of growth on every filesystem-backed path.
- Loki process restarts and configuration errors in systemd or container logs.
- Ingestion failures from the log collector.
- Query latency and error rates as the retained dataset grows.
- Backup completion and the age of the most recent restorable copy.
Send logs to Loki and connect Grafana
Installing Loki creates a log database, but it does not collect logs by itself. Grafana recommends Grafana Alloy for sending logs to Loki. Alloy can tail files or container logs, attach labels, and forward entries to the Loki URL exposed by your private network or reverse proxy.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
For Docker testing, the quick-start tutorial shows Alloy tailing container logs and forwarding them to a single-binary Loki container. For a VPS hosting game servers, point Alloy at the relevant service logs, keep labels low-cardinality, and avoid putting rapidly changing values such as unique request IDs into labels.

In Grafana, add a Loki data source using the proxy URL or the internal service address that is reachable from the Grafana process. Save and test the data source, then run a simple LogQL query against a known label. A successful metrics request alone does not confirm ingestion; you need to see a recent log line returned by a query.
Troubleshoot the failures that occur most often
Loki exits immediately
Read the foreground output or service journal. YAML syntax errors, a schema incompatible with the binary, and paths that do not exist are the usual first checks. Re-download the configuration for the installed version instead of guessing at changed field names.
Port 3100 is unreachable
Check that the process is running, confirm its listen address, and test from the VPS with curl. If localhost works but a remote client fails, inspect the firewall and reverse-proxy upstream. If the proxy returns an authentication or TLS error, fix the proxy rather than opening port 3100.
Logs are rejected or do not appear
Verify the Alloy endpoint, tenant header requirements, network route, and labels used by the query. Read Alloy’s own logs as well as Loki’s. A healthy Loki process can still receive no data when the collector is pointed at the wrong URL or lacks permission to read the source files.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Disk fills unexpectedly
Measure ingestion growth, inspect retention settings, and identify which configured path is consuming space. Stop ingestion only if necessary to protect the host, then correct retention, move to durable object storage, or expand the volume. Do not delete index or chunk directories manually while Loki is running unless the release documentation explicitly supports the operation.
Upgrade and operate the VPS safely
- Record the current Loki version, configuration checksum, storage backend, and retention policy.
- Back up the configuration and confirm that the data backup is restorable.
- Read the release documentation for schema, storage, and migration changes.
- Stage the new binary or image with the matching configuration.
- Stop or roll the service according to the chosen deployment method, then start the new version.
- Check service logs, the metrics endpoint, ingestion, and a known LogQL query.
- Keep the previous binary or image available until the validation window has passed.
For a single VPS, maintenance windows and tested restores matter more than theoretical horizontal scale. Move to Helm, multiple Loki components, and durable object storage when availability, ingestion volume, or query concurrency makes one host an unacceptable risk.
Quick Recap
Practical decision checklist
- Choose the local package or binary for a small bare-metal Linux VPS.
- Use Docker Compose when the priority is evaluation, testing, or a reproducible development stack.
- Use Helm when Kubernetes is already the operating environment.
- Download a configuration that matches the Loki version exactly.
- Run Loki as a dedicated account and persist its configured data paths.
- Verify
http://localhost:3100/metricsbefore troubleshooting collectors or Grafana. - Keep port 3100 private and put an authenticating TLS reverse proxy in front of any public endpoint.
- Use Alloy to ship logs and test a real LogQL query from Grafana.
- Define retention, disk alerts, backups, and recovery steps before relying on Loki during an incident.
